This is a work were rhythm takes over to articulate a contemporary and empirical sound world. It is born of my admiration of popular culture and presents no pretensions. The title signifies a suspension, an absence or a liberation from the prejudice of dogmatic elitist musical thinking and styles that have stigmatized symphonic music. The first movement generates the source material of which the whole work is based. Rhythm , the principal element of the piece, is used as a continuo, serving to connect all three movements. It is especially highlighted in the second movement which is a kind of instrumental rap. The final movement Beat Box alludes to the large portable radios, aka ghetto blasters, popular at one time in urban neighborhoods. Thus I conceive the orchestra here as a large radio were music changes from one station to another transmitting and transforming wireless sound vibrations into different moods and grooves.

My quartets composed between 1997 and 2005 were conceived as an interconnected, self-contained cycle of works ranging from the (in my opinion) quasi revolutionary Quartet No. 1 to the Quartet No. 5 entitled Versuch über die Fuge [Attempt at a Fugue]. The Quartet No. 6 – Study on Beethoven – composed fourteen years after No. 5 should be conceived as a new approach and the commencement of a new quartet cycle with an unknown ending. All that can be said is that the subsequent quartets will be devoted to an intense study of Ludwig van Beethoven’s unique and consummate artistry of quartet composition. Despite a reverence for Beethoven at a very early stage, my own compositions have steered well clear of this unapproachable cosmos with the exception of my concert overture Con brio. The perhaps only link with the five quartets of the first cycle of quartets is the single-movement structure of the thirty-minute Quartet No. 6. The fundamental coordinates have otherwise been reset to zero. This is therefore also a ‘study’ in a literal sense. In the Quartet No. 6, I set out with a state of tonality displaying significant extensions whose centrifugal forces are barely containable. My focus is the detection of the inherent gravitation of tonality, including phenomenons such as tension/relaxation, suspension/resolution and fixation/deviation. From a formal aspect, the work is too experimental and unsentimental for explorations in a nostalgic-romantic sense. On the contrary, tonality or at least its fundamental assumptions are initially set down in the sense of a study or test assembly in order to permit subsequent experimentation, variation and the formulation of exceptions with the desire and firm conviction that it is possible to express something innovative and never previously heard with this seemingly exhausted fundamental material. I have been repeatedly astonished by the unfolding in the progression of this piece which has taken me to unknown locations, especially from a formal aspect. I am fascinated to see what forms the subsequent quartets in this ‘Beethoven study’ cycle will lead me to. The Quartet No. 6 has been created in close artistic and friendly cooperation with Anne-Sophie Mutter and she is the dedicatee of this work. This is an enigmatic and rhapsodic piece for solo piano that is composed in Whole Tone C mode and is based on the Book of Revelation Chapter 8 Verses 1-5 in the New Testament Bible. Bar 1-18 is based on verses 1-3 and is sharp, spacey and minimal - the sound of silence and of the angels. The emphasis is the sound between the notes.Verse 4 states: 'And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the Saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.' This section changes tone and phrase. There is a beautiful ascending up the keyboard, which is delecate but with hesitance. It is the light before the darkness; the potential energy before the explosion; the calm before the storm. There must be tension.Verse 5 states: 'And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the Earth, and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.'This section therefore is rather more dramatic, with a contrast of high and low pitched notes and chords. The final bars of the piece are suspension - sharp and repetative chords and ending on one sharp note - what happens next?The pianist should pedal freely throughout the piece and add their own dramatic touch to this very illistrative score.

This piece is great for young children beginning adults alike. First, there is an Alberti bass in the left hand for most of the piece; Alberti bass is a patterned bass used by the likes of Mozart, and it is a relatively easy way to allow for the suspension of a chord. The pedaling for this piece can also teach students how to change the pedal when changing chord harmonies in a fairly simplified pattern that usually lasts a measure. The dynamic markings are sparse at this point, but guide the student to start paying attention to loud and soft dynamics, and it is a good learning lesson about breaks and pauses in the music at the end of one patterned phrase and beginning of another. The music itself leaves a lot of room for emotive expression because one can play with a rubato that allows one to stretch some measures to emphasize certain harmonies. The whole piece sounds as if it were a setting of fairy tale set in the misty mountains complete with wizards, elves, and princesses. It is perfect for an ambient and poetic mood of a player who would like to learn a relatively simple piece. To practice this piece, try perfecting each section before going on to the next.
