In 1845 Felix Mendelssohn was working on 2 movements for a 6th symphony in C-Major (shortly before he begann working on his Elijah oratorion). This is an attempt to complete them in his style and for the first time. I. Allegro ma non troppoFor the first movement a full score of the first 2 minutes (79 measures) exist and additionally sketches for further passages were included and elaborated here: m. 81 - 93: transition to the 2nd theme m. 107 - 116: 2nd theme m. 146 - 150 ending of the exposition m. 152 - 165: beginning of the development m. 196 - 204: canonic passage 11:57 II. Andante cantabile The very melodious sketches for the first 2:15 minutes were worked out to a second movement with variations on the main theme and a more passionate middle part. This publication includes the score and parts and is addressed to any conductors and orchestras willing to play unknown, excellent music by Mendelssohn put in a context true to his idiom. Published by zephyrwindmusic.com (A0.1395044). British composer Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) was in her early 20’s when she wrote her first major work, Symphony in C minor. Despite the many challenges faced by a female composer in Victorian era Great Britain, Smith’s composition received a high level of praise from the British press following the work’s premiere by the Musical Society of London in 1863. Despite this early praise, Smith never received the long-term recognization her talents deserved. Due to a number of factors, her orchestral compositions were not even published until the early 2000s.This edition is based entirely on Smith’s original manuscript. The edition is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/inconsistent dynamics and articulations. The original hand-written manuscript contains many additional markings in pencil (also included in this edition), apparently added after the inked manuscript was complete.Parts are also available, and as with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any potential copyright issues. Parts can be used in analog form – printed on paper – or uploaded as a digital part onto a reading device such as an iPad for performance. There’s no doubt that this is one of the saddest and yet beautiful works ever, The Urlicht from Mahler’s 2nd Symphony in C minor for alto voice and alternatively here for Flugel solo. I arranged this 14 years ago for a dear friend trumpeter of mine who passed before his time and a favourite of his.I discovered Mahler 2 at the age of 16 and like Kaplin, it has been a journey of understanding and study for me sifting through Mahler’s own handwritten score at times and through his letters at the time of composing which on and off was near 20 years! The recording you will here attached is by The Fairey Band (from my album with them It's Not Unusual worldofbrass) conducted by Frank Renton and sung by one of the most beautiful alto voices in this land, Margaret McDonald. I’ve no doubt in my mind this arrangement works 100% hence me including the recording itself. Alternatives within the score are Picc A tpt in lieu of Sop, the solo line flg instead of mezzo voice, vibraphone instead of harp.
