Covid Suite, Op. 29 started as a composition exercise to implement various harmonic structures, which quickly turned into a means of conveying the moods that 2020 has brought about.The first movement, in C major, is entitled New Year and it conveys the excitement that 2020 would bring. As the movement progresses, the tonality becomes more unstable, which symbolizes what's to come.The second movement, in Bb major, is entitled Pandemic and it conveys the uncertainty brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic. It also represents being confined to quarantine and the longing of returning to the normal life we had before the global pandemic hit.The third movement, in F# minor, is entitled Discord and it conveys the chaos and discontent of all the global events that have occurred. Portraits of a Prayer, Op. 11 is composed for solo piano. The title of this piece is not based on anything specific, but I personally liked the name. Even more so, I wanted to poke fun at mainstream music. This was going to be part of a suite I had planned but ultimately never went through with it. Instead, I used this piece as an opportunity to work on implementing polytonality, ostinato, and syncopated motives. TJHoltMusic #6134009. Published by TJHoltMusic (A0.1021619). Sonata for Flute and Piano, Op. 12 was written for and is dedicated to my friend, Natalie Smith. This sonata conveys different moods using various styles in each of the movements, all of which take some liberty and, at times, are vague with form.The first movement, inspired by Claude Debussy, uses a quasi mirror form, with the two motives connecting with a sudden yet seamless tempo change, which is supported by the driving rhythm in the piano, and a development in the middle of the movement.The second movement is a funeral march and is based on the chord progression built around the sustained B natural in the flute, which conveys a dreamlike atmosphere. As the progression transforms, there is an increasing sense of dread that unfolds until this feeling becomes primal before collapsing in on itself at the climax of the movement. From there, the progression returns more actively with, although not as strong as before, a sense of dread still present for the remainder of the movement. The movement is in ternary form (ABA), with a development in the first A section.The third movement is a more clearly defined rondo form and is based on themes that undergo subtle changes each time they return. Other themes include a recurring call and response between the treble and bass lines in the piano, which the flute participates in this exchange when it is presented again later, a reference to the second movement's progression, and a modal theme that floats in terms of harmonic and melodic structure. When the initial theme returns for the final time, a coda restates previous ideas as the finale gradually increases its tempo and concludes the piece. This movement is the most technically challenging, especially considering that I asked Natalie how fast she can double tongue. In general, there are a fair amount of high passages and big leaps. I wrote this piece in binary form so that I could finish it quickly and enter it into the contest the same day. Sonata for Harp, Op. 17 was composed out of the desire to write for an instrument I had not previously written for at the time. The themes used throughout the entire sonata are revolved around the limitations of the harp pedals.The first movement, in Bb major, utilizes Sonata-Allegro form and revolves around the dialogue of two themes and constant motion, which are developed further in the development section. Structurally and tonally, the principles of this form, as well as the piece overall, is applied is the same as in a Mozart piece.The second movement, in E major, which is the tritone to Bb, is in ternary form and opens with a melody that represents prayer. Following this prayer is a chorale that gradually becomes more grandiose in nature. A motive of loud planing chords is the answer to this prayer, which is followed by the softer motive that transitions into the next section. The theme is a simple melody containing planing fifths in the left hand, which is accompanied by ornamentation in the right hand. In the final section, a combination of themes, including the initial prayer motive and chorale motive, return and closes the movement.The third movement, in Bb major, is also in ternary form with rondo-esque tendencies. One central theme culminates the final movement of this sonata, which is brought through different tonal centers. Furthermore, it is presented in the form of a waltz in the middle section of the piece. While joyful in nature, there are humorous moments such as terrace dynamics implanted to surprise and keep the listener engaged throughout the movement.I. Allegro giojosoII. Adagio religiosoIII. I was inspired to compose the Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Op. 4 towards the end of the Snow Pond Composer’s Workshop that I attended in the summer of 2017. I was compelled even further upon learning that the classical saxophone repertoire is limited. This work presented a challenge, as this is the first work I have composed for the saxophone. The first movement resembles a traditional Sonata-Allegro form, with the first theme being inspired by Petrouchka by Igor Stravinsky. All of the themes in this sonata are presented as the movement progresses. The second movement is slow and lyrical, based on quartal harmonies and tonal ambiguity as well as a varying accompanying passage. The third movement is a short, yet frantic interlude based on augmented arpeggios. Henri Tomasi’s Trumpet Concerto serves as an inspiration for the fourth movement, in terms of its spontaneous character.I. Allegro con gioiaII. Andante AppassionatoIII. InterludeIV. Breathe, Op. 13 was inspired by the idea of the role of the breath in yoga as well as a means to calm down in the face of adversity. The piece starts slowly to warm up the breath into the session, which then brings more engagement of said breath to fruition. As the piece progresses, the motion is established and stays consistent until the focus starts to wander. A brief pause followed by a restatement of a past motive reestablishes the focus of the breath before becoming more active than before due to the intensity of the activity, which in turn takes longer to reestablish said focus. Motives from the beginning of the piece with the active motion from the middle bring about the coda of the piece, gradually getting softer and slowing down towards the end of the piece. This piece is minimalistic in melodic content and symmetrical in structure in order to convey the role of the breath. Ambivalence and Prayer, Op. 8 was composed as a musical response to Maurice Ravel's Jeux d'eau. This piece is about finding one's self amidst uncertainty. There are two main motives that represent the title of this piece. Ambivalence, or uncertainty, is represented by augmented arpeggios and harmonic content with no clear direction. Prayer is represented by a clearer melodic motive, similar to that of a chorale, which temporarily brings one back to a clearer state of mind. The two motives return throughout the piece. Sea of Faith, Op. 15 is dedicated to the music team at Severna Park United Methodist Church. I composed this piece, in D major, as a means to elaborate on Sonata-Allegro form. The melodic content is based on the progression, II - V - I - vi - V/V - V, which is then brought through multiple tonal centers throughout the piece. In the development section, a response to this progression appears, ii - V - I - V6 - vi - ii - I - V, and is also brought through multiple tonal centers. Both themes appear in the recapitulation, which is followed by a small coda to conclude the piece.When faced with adversity, it is important to follow God's plan for us and float through the Sea of Faith to reach the promised land.Composed by Tyler J. This piece was intended for Three Blessings, Op. 14, which in itself was going to be a larger piece, but could not elaborate on the material at the time of writing the piece. Furthermore, I felt that it was better as its own piece. Toccata in A Major, Op. 22 revolves around a simple melody with the perpetual sixteenth-note ostinato motive, which is complicated with wider intervals and soft dynamics. The ostinato motive takes various forms but never loses motion, even gaining momentum as the tempo increases towards the end of the piece. Composed by Tyler J. Published by TJHoltMusic (A0.1021631). Tarantella for the Boys, Op. 24 was written for solo piano and is dedicated to my nephews Braxton, Brayden, and Bryson. The overall mood is reminiscent of their energetic personalities with exception of the Bryson, the youngest nephew, who is under a year old at the time of composing this piece; the others are 2 and 4 years old respectively. The form of this piece is a rondo and one motive represents each of the boys with each motive becoming a little more subdued. On the other hand, the initial motive is the conglomerate of all three of their personalities, which returns often throughout the piece. At the end of the piece, the energy reaches a point where it is almost out of control, even clumsy, and ends with my middle nephew Brayden face-planting on the ground due to his clumsiness.Composed by Tyler J. Published by TJHoltMusic (A0.1021621). Three Blessings, Op. 14 is a suite in three movements for solo piano. Each movement is based on a verse in the bible as well as the doxology. The first movement, in G major, is based on Psalm 34:8, blessed is the one who takes refuge in him, which commands the disciple to trust the Lord and see that the Lord is good rather than fear him. A dialogue between the disciple and the Lord takes place in each section of the piece, as the motives are based on call and response. The second movement, in B major, is based on the text from the doxology, Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, which is represented through the use of the pedal and melodic content, as well as the peaceful mood. The third movement, in C major, is based on Philippians 4:4, Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, Rejoice! A recurring theme in the form of a minuet, a dance in 3, conveys the feeling of joy in the Lord, and to have complete faith in him.This piece is dedicated to my church family at Severna Park United Methodist Church, who have helped me find myself once again through love and Christ. They have blessed me, so it is only natural that Jesus allows me to give my blessings unto him and unto you.
