The Symphony for Organ No. 5 in F minor, Op. 42, No. 1, was composed by Charles-Marie Widor in 1879, with numerous revisions published by the composer in later years. The fifth movement, in F major, is often referred to as just Widor's Toccata because it is his most famous piece. It lasts around six minutes. Its fame in part comes from its frequent use as recessional music at festive Christmas and wedding ceremonies. The melody of Widor's Toccata is based upon an arrangement of rapid staccato arpeggios which form phrases, initially in F, moving in fifths through to C major, G major, etc. Each phrase consists of one bar. The melody is complemented by syncopated chords, forming an accented rhythm against the perpetual arpeggio motif. The phrases are contextualized by a descending bass line, often beginning with the 7th tone of each phrase key.Blankenship's arrangement for brass octet takes advantage of the trumpets' ranges by voicing the arpeggiated motif in only these parts and allowing it to be passed back and forth (this also means that it can be customized to be performed by as few as 1 or as many as 4 trumpeters). As a tubist, Blankenship has written a very demanding bass part that is not for the faint of heart; it can be played 8va but does not present the same effect.

This miniature toccata for piano features a single persistent staccato note, repeated by the left hand, while the right hand continually crosses over the left to play the melody above and below the repeated note. This organ work represents an exhilarating work of joy and adoration to our Saviour, Lord and King. As a clarion call for Christmas, soft flutes carry the melody over a dreamy pentatonic configuration with a drone in the pedals. Staccato trumpets exhibit the joy chordal motif, repeating and swelling to a joyous cadenza on the pedals in toccata style. This jubilant moment continues to intensify as syncopated harmonies join the final verse in elongation on 32' pedals to its majestic close.Toccata on In Dulci Jubilo is designed as a short Organ Postlude performed during the Advent/Christmas Season. The work opens with a medley of Carols including Joy To The World, Angels We Have Heard On High, and Silent Night, before leading to the exuberant In Dulci Jubilo (Good Christian Men Rejoice)! White's arrangement of In Dulci Jubilo, a 1328 German Chorale theme is combined with the magnificent accompaniment of Charles-Marie Widor's famous Toccata from Symphony No. 5 (1879). It appears in 6/8 meter as opposed to the original 4/2 meter. Tritonic interludes intercept the flow of the German Carol alternately, propelling the music to its rousing end

It is the same in the present work for trumpet and organ in which the two movements form a pair of opposites: 'Toccata' is a powerful, solid music piece that is rough around the edges, with staccato as essential form; 'Melisma' is a sweeping, light and round structure with legato as essential form. This polarity is as elementary as 'male and female'. This is why it is characteristic of the yin-yang symbol that the curved, melismatic line unites contrapuntally with the toccata-like rhythm so that a jubilant praise of wholeness – whether in the Christian or Taoist sense – can be heard. St. Helens Suite for trombone and organ takes its inspiration from the hymn tune DUKE STREET (paired with the text “Jesus Shall Reignâ€) by John Hatton, who lived on Duke Street in St. Helens, UK. The suite was meant to have dual purpose as a concert piece and as music for worship services. Each of the first three movements contains fragments of the hymn tune. The first movement, Exordium, is built upon three main ideas that alternate, one of which is the second phrase of DUKE STREET. Aria dolorosa takes its opening melody from the musical motive which appears in bar 32 of the fourth movement, which was composed first. The first phrase of the hymn tune is folded into the Aria, but may not be recognizable because of its Dorian mode and slightly altered rhythm. The Capriccio ritmico is brief and quirky, showcasing some unusual tone colors on the organ, staccato technique on the trombone, and incorporates the third and fourth phrases of the hymn tune. Finally, the Toccata energica merges trombone melodies with toccata-style figurations in the organ, and the full hymn tune, though rhythmically altered, is finally heard in the second half of the toccata.
