She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas. Poet Alfonsina Storni began writing during a tumultuous childhood fraught with economic hardships, many disruptive moves, and an alcoholic father. She danced with a theatrical troupe and then became a teacher and journalist. She bore a child out of wedlock and found herself working as a single mother during socially oppressive times. In Buenos Aires she joined the emerging world of women’s rights, becoming an important literary voice in the movement. When her breast cancer returned, her lifelong passion for the sea culminated in her suicide off of the coast of Argentina. [The sky was about to embrace you, blind, and you had in your body of gray heliotropes a submerged city, with the misty sky like a chalice about to overflow with tears.] Program note: Commissioned for Dr. Ramona M. Wis and the North Central College Women’s Chorale of Naperville, Illinois, La ciudad sumergida (The Submerged City) by Adrienne Inglis for four-part treble chorus with nature soundtrack captures the mood of a river, a city, the cloudy sky, and the poet’s own profound melancholy. The sound of rain creates both the ambiance of a misty day on the river and the sensation of cathartic crying from great sadness and pain. The city’s reflection on the river’s surface gives the illusion that the city is submerged in the water. The reflection of the clouds hovering low over RÃo de La Plata looks like gray heliotrope flowers. The apocalyptic images of a submerged city and of tears overflowing from the chalice-sky eerily foreshadow rising sea levels due to anthropogenic global warming. The nature soundtrack of rain was recorded by the composer in the hill country of central Texas, July 2020. Performance note: This aleatoric, asynchronous composition is suitable for remote singing along with the video score and nature soundtrack. Observe the order of entrances, but know that it’s not meant to line up exactly. Finish a phrase even if another phrase has started. Diphthongs move immediately to the second vowel sound. Ya begins with the [dÊ’] sound and llanto begins with the [Ê’] sound, both typical of the Buenos Aires accent. Sing quite expressively except for the neblivelado section which is misty and veiled. The director may wish to indicate the rehearsals numbers or the singers may follow the time on the video-or both. M.H. DuncanMartha Hill Duncan’s passion for music started early, inspired by her mother, who sang and played the piano by ear. Martha was a member of the first graduating class of the Houston High School for Performing and Visual Arts and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin.Her piano works have been inspired, at least in part, by her long-time career as a piano teacher and some of these pieces, as well as her art songs, appear in educational publications and syllabi. Piano collection titles include The Sunken Garden, Isla Vista Suite, Precipitations, Angular Measures, Limestone Etchings, Rainy Days and Cottage Days. Since moving from the United States to Canada, many of her compositions have been inspired by Canadian landscapes and texts. In January 2014, her youth opera, Searching the Painted Sky, with poet/librettist Janet Windeler Ryan, was premiered at the National Opera Association Convention in New York City. She was named a finalist for the 2020 Louis Applebaum Award.A former piano examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is also a founding member of Red Leaf Pianoworks, a self-publishing composers’ collective. Originally from Houston, Texas, Martha and her husband Martin have lived in Kingston, Ontario since 1988. She also conducts the women’s choir She Sings! and has two grown children and two granddaughters. As a child, his biggest question was, “What would happen if...?†His first experiments involved creating foul-smelling concoctions with his chemistry set in hisparents’ basement. He survived and went on to complete an Honours Physics degree at McGill University, followed by graduate degrees in astronomy at the Universities of Toronto and Texas at Austin. Post-doctoral research was performed at Cornell University, the University of Toronto and the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1988, he became a professor of astronomy and physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.In his academic career he has co-authored over 120 scientific papers, which have been cited over 8,000 times. He has presented numerous invited talks at international scientific conferences and has been the guest speaker at many public lectures. His research has ranged from the study of black holes to simulations of the formation and orbital evolution of planets and comets. He is best known for the prediction of the existence of a disk of small icy bodies beyond Neptune, which he and his colleagues called the Kuiper Belt. In 1996, the International Astronomical Union named Asteroid 6115 “martinduncan†in honor of his contributions to planetary dynamics.

The House Of The Rising Sun was named after Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means Rising Sun in French) and was open for business from 1862 (occupation by Union troops) until 1874, when it was closed due to complaints by neighbors. It was located at 826-830 St. Louis St.2) It's about a women's prison in New Orleans called the Orleans Parish women's prison, which had an entrance gate adorned with a rising sun artwork. The melody is a traditional English ballad, but the song became popular as an African-American folk song. It was recorded by Texas Alexander in the 1920s, then by a number of other artists including Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Josh White and later Nina Simone. It was her version The Animals first heard. No one can claim rights to the song, meaning it can be recorded and sold royalty-free. Many bands covered the song after it became a hit for The Animals.

He has dedicated compositions to people. He has been inspired by people, but never composed anything that represents someone's personality the way Pearl does. Composed in October 2005, this work is the musical painting of the woman who would become the composer's wife almost two years later. Each musical aspect of the two movements symbolizes a different characteristic of Pearl's personality. Woven into the music is her quiet, caring, devoted nature, her love for God, her passion for the things she believes in, her wisdom, her logical and analytical approach to life, and her care-free disregard for the pressures that force many other women to be less than true to themselves. All of these facets of Pearl are portrayed through symbolism, atmosphere, and mood. The first movement is best described as unfolding. In an unassuming way, the piece unfolds like a delicate blossom confidently moving from bud to full bloom. This unfolding represents the gradual discovery of the depth of a personality as a relationship grows. The debut performance of this remarkable composition formed part of the October 2008 Faculty Recital at Rice University, Houston, Texas. Pearl is appropriate for college or professional level musicians. As a serious work, Pearl makes an excellent recital piece. The unusual brass trio instrumentation for this work is an added bonus and makes the piece ideal for integration in a brass quintet repertoire, as it provides a rest opportunity for the trombone and one of the trumpets.The MP3 in the sample is only the first movement.

Celebrate women scientists!Metamorphosis (2019) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) for flute, harp, and string orchestra, commissioned by Balcones Community Orchestra, celebrates the life and work of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), pioneering entomologist, naturalist, and artist.Duration 5:30 minutes.Commissioned by the Balcones Community Orchestra of Austin, Texas, Metamorphosis (2019) by Adrienne Inglis for solo flute, solo harp, and string orchestra, honors the life and work of pioneering entomologist, naturalist, and artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). As she carefully documented in illustrated detail the life cycle of so many insects, Metamorphosis musically follows a butterfly from adult, egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The piece opens with an ostinato pattern in the strings over which the flute and harp play fluttering modal melodies. The strings and harp represent the egg stage with minimalistic layers of a single pitch. To recognize Merian’s time in Suriname and her discovery of many insect species there, a cheerful tune fashioned after traditional Arawak folk songs informs the busy larvae in the caterpillar canon. A bit of contemplative dorian polyphony laced with metamorphic machinations demonstrate the remarkable transformation of the pupa as well as Merian’s time at a devout Labadist religious commune. The butterfly emerges from the pupa with a flute/harp cadenza and then the strings underscore the adult butterfly with a return of the ostinato.
