I came up with the lyrics at around 3am in the morning of 3rd December 2014 sitting at a desk in room 703 of the De Syloia Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam. Often I find that my periods of working abroad give me the space to think of things in new ways. This song is a good example of that.One look at the first page of the score of 'On That Cross' is all you need to realize that this is not a case of a choir singing with a piano accompaniment. I put the piano part above the choir in order to dispel that misconception. So if it's not that, what is it? I wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to approach a subject from two completely different points of view, without either point of view being compromised by the other, and yet the result can nevertheless be a beautiful synergy. That is what the pianist and the choir are doing here. Each is meditating upon the cross of Christ, but from two totally unrelated points of view and yet somehow combining in a way that is almost hypnotically beautifully. There is little obvious relationship between the choir's and the piano's music; and yet each is reconciled to the other ... and there's a very good reason why I wanted the music to speak of such reconciliation.In late 2014 people in Iraq were being beheaded, crucified and generally killed in the most brutal and sadistic manner possible. Their only ‘crime’ was to dare to call themselves Christians. You can say what you like but in my book nobody has the right to tell anybody else what they should believe, much less murder them on religious grounds. The thing that incensed me almost to the point of incandescence was that the perpetrators of this unspeakable evil dared to justify their actions by claiming that they were acting on behalf of their god. So in such frame of mind I started to write the lyrics to 'On That Cross'.The first words that came into my mind were “Oh men who dare to call on gods to justify your hatred – of this be sure …†and I wanted to follow that with threats of eternal damnation, torture in hellfire and so on. Except that the words that flowed out of my fingers onto my computer screen were not like that at all. “Of this be sure – I love you still, my cross your salvation from all the sin of man.â€It doesn’t get much more powerful than that. I may be incapable of loving the people of ISIS, ISIL, DAESH or whatever one calls them, but my God isn’t. He created them, he sent his Son to die for them … and he is even now ready to save them, as he is you and me. That’s grace.A small group of us sang this at a Good Friday united service in 2016. Possibly unique: an Easter (or more properly Good Friday) hymn for six-part choir, in which the choir is actually the accompaniment for a piano solo of almost hyponotic dissonance in comparison. The result of superimposing these elements is strangely beautiful. The composer offers the following commentary: I guess most people seeing a piece with a choir and a piano would think of it – not unreasonably – as a choir accompanied by a piano. This piece is subtly different: the way in which I can best explain what was in my mind when I composed it would be to describe it as a piano solo accompanied by choir. While the choir sings music that feels like a slow pavane the pianist plays a series of arpeggios and cluster chords around another relatively simple but unlinked melody. The combined effect is almost hypnotic and if the singers think of the pianist as their accompanist they will almost certainly lose the plot of what they are singing! On first hearing it may appear that the piano and the choir have little in common but the concept is simple enough. Both choir and pianist are meditating on the same theme, but coming at it from totally different directions. There is no formula to the way in which we approach the cross of Christ. We come as we are, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation, meeting at the foot of the cross. The juxtaposition of choir and piano represents that meeting and the cluster chords that the pianist plays reinforce a sense of brokenness that is essential to a proper understanding of the music. I have dedicated this to Canon Andrew White and the Christians of Iraq, knowing that their situation seems impossible in the face of the evil that walks that land, but trusting in the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ to do right even if from our earthly perspective we are unable to discern what right is.

That Easter Day With Joy Was Bright, also titled That Eastertide With Joy was Bright, arranged for Flute with an easy, Junior level Piano accompanimnet in the hymnal key of D major.This ancient Hymn is performed at Easter. The beautiful tune is labeled PUER NOBIS and is a melody from a fifteenth-century manuscript from Trier. However, the tune probably dates from an earlier time and may even have folk roots. PUER NOBIS was first altered in Spangenberg's Christliches GesangbUchlein (1568), in Petri's famous Piae Cantiones (1582). Most hymnals have it in the key of D, so that is the key I arranged it in. The lyrics are noted with the music for verse. The accompaniment supports the melody allowing the flute to phrase and interpret without too much complexity. Though the harmony is somewhat reduced from the hymnal , 4-part version, it still has color and interest and works nicely accompanying the solist. Adult beginners will also get satisfaction from this arrangement, the 4 part writing in hymnals are usually to hard for this level player, that is why I arranged it so more people can enjoy this lovely Easter song. This arrangement starts quietly and the piano accompaniment has a tender line that weaves into the verse breaks.  Verse one and verse two do not do the chorus. We wait for it- and then FINALLY when we get to the third verse we get to play the 'He Lives!' chorus. And the flute simply states that up high on beautiful third register G while the piano finishes the phrase. It's a touching way to testify. The flute part dips down to low e, but to really play this well you need to be able to play a gorgeous high g. That's the note on which you spin a beautiful vibrato.You'll need a really good pianist.Please listen to the recording.I hope you feel and enjoy what this music can teach you in your soul.

The music reminds me of little children skipping with glee under a bright blue morning sky. It needs to be sung with joy in the Lord, Who hears us when we call, forgives our sins, and gives us grace to love Him, keep his commands and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. It should be a wonder morning service anthem, but why not try it in the evening, too, in anticipation of meeting God at the beginning of the next day. The key to the style of this piece is rhythmic vitality. The 6/8 meter should be conducted in two, but singers (and the conductor) must feel the eighth note division of the beat as the composition's energizing rhythmic subtext. After the choir has learned the words, pitches and rhythms of the piece, have them let the text go for awhile, and replace it with the syllable doo for every eighth note value. That is, for every eighth note sing 'doo once; for every quarter note sing it twice; for every dotted quarter note sing it three times, and so on. You will hear some giggling from your singers. Did he feed the donkey there, or give sweet Mary all his care?
