River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. Frequently associated with the Jindyworobak Movement, Cato was also known for her work campaigning on environmental and conservation issues.

Ragtime was originally and primarily piano music. The Library of Congress traces the origin and wellspring of ragtime to St. Louis, Missouri.  The Britannica website explains, “Ragtime evolved in the playing of honky-tonk pianists along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the last decades of the 19th century. It was influenced by minstrel-show songs, African American banjo styles, and syncopated (off-beat) dance rhythms of the cakewalk, and also elements of European music.â€Â    But it wasn’t until the mid-1890s, when music publishers started printing ragtime scores, making the music available to the public at large, that ragtime’s popularity began to soar.  By 1900 ragtime was the popular music.  It stayed that way until about 1917 when the rise of jazz began to overtake it.  By 1920, ragtime was nearly forgotten.    Thirty years later, a ragtime revival began.  And one Patricia Lamb-Conn found out that her father, Joseph F. Lamb, was a well-known composer of ragtime.  In fact, the “Big Three†composers of classical ragtime are considered to be Scott Joplin, James Scott and the only non-African American, Joseph Lamb.    Lamb was born in 1887 in New Jersey, taught himself to play piano and was very much influenced by Joplin’s early ragtime publications.  From there, Lamb went on to develop into a master of classic ragtime.    One of Lamb’s most popular works was a 1916 composition he titled “Patricia Rag.†(The title apparently had nothing to do with his daughter, who was born in 1924.)  It consists of four themes in five sections, with the first theme repeated after sections 1 and 2.  Lamb pitched the opening in E-flat Major, changing to A-flat Major at the Trio.      This brass quintet arrangement, completed in 2024, consists of 150 measures, approximately five minutes, ten seconds in length.  It retains the basic structure of the original piano score but modifies the pitches to B-flat Major and E-flat Major, respectively, to accommodate the normal playing range of the brass instruments.  Possible exceptions for some players include:  (1) Trumpet 1 plays its A-above-the-staff a number of times and its B above-the-staff once; (2) Trombone plays several E above-the-staff notes; (3) Tuba plays several way-below-the-staff F notes and one high G note. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. I expounded on the theme as night fell and the sound of the babbling river and bird songs grew more mysterious in the dark forest. American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer - Arrangement for Voice, Piano and Guitar by Michael Thomas CoullGrandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer is a novelty holiday song.  Written by Randy Brooks, the song was originally performed by Elmo & Patsy, the husband-and-wife duo of Elmo Shropshire and Patsy Trigg in 1979. The lyrics tell the story of a grandmother celebrating at a Christmas Eve party with her family when, while drunk on eggnog and off her medication, she staggers out into a snowstorm despite everyone imploring her not to.  She is found the next day, trampled; Santa and his reindeer are determined to be the culprits when 'incriminating Claus marks' are found on Grandma's back.  Grandpa seems completely unfazed by his wife's demise and spends the holiday 'watching football, drinking beer and playing cards with cousin Mel', while the rest of the family mourns Grandma's death and wonders if the gifts they bought for her should be returned. Christmas dinner otherwise goes on as normal, with a centrepiece of roast goose, figgy pudding for dessert, and 'blue and silver candles' to match Grandma’s hairpiece.  The upshot is a warning to the listeners that Santa is unfit to carry a driver's license!This arrangment of Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer is for solo voice, piano and guitar, but also contains harmonized sections (backing 'oohs', and the final few bars) that also enable this arrangment to be performed by an SSA choir - with the majority of it sung in unison. However it is performed, it is a great choice for a fun, novelty song for Christmas.

Abelson, horn performer and teacher who died on September 1, 2007 at the age of 56 after aprotracted battle with cancer. Abelson served as long-time professor of horn at Carnegie MellonUniversity in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The work is inscribed “in memory of Dennis Abelson and for hismany students and friends to remember him.â€Dennis commissioned two works from me for the Carnegie Mellon Horn Choir and was alwaysencouraging and interested in what I was doing with his instrument. He leaves behind a verydistinguished legacy of horn students who have held many significant orchestra and teachingpositions throughout the world. When one heard Dennis talk about his students (both current andformer), it was immediately obvious how much he rejoiced in their successes and achievements.This work is founded upon the pitches of D and A, taken from the initial letters of Abelson’s names.It is a rhapsodic elaboration of that basic material – as the melodic material is constantly developedand expanded. The “river†of the title refers both to the flowing character of the music’sdevelopment and to the three rivers of Pittsburgh, the city in which Abelson spent his entire life.
