The song is also known as “O Waly, Waly†which means something like “woe is meâ€. For such an old song, it is not surprising that there are many variations of the lyrics. An early version of the modern lyrics was consolidated by the British folksong collector Cecil Sharp in 1906 using multiple older sources in southern England. There are many sets of lyrics with different story-lines. This was because performers would often create new lyrics for the song. This melody has attracted a family of lyrics many of which bear little relationship to each other. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular and optimistic lyrics used during the twentieth century. The song was made popular by many folk singers notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune. But as with the lyrics, there are many variations on the melody with the result that no single variation can be considered the “correct†one.This SSA arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for boy choir, amateur choir, school or college choir. Each section of the choir as the melody line at some point and there are attractive and evocative counter-melodies. In the Soprano 1 part (which has one brief divisi section), the highest note is G5 (the G just above the staff) and the highest note in the Soprano 2 part is E5 (near the top of the treble staff). The Alto part has a range of G below Middle C (G4) up to B flat in the middle of the treble staff. The piano part is an integral part of the arrangement and therefore essential. The music begins in E flat and modulates to C major. Running at just over three minutes, the work is sure to be popular with choir and audiences alike. East Texas, A Bear Hunt, the third of five movements from A Texas Symphony, is a musical illustration of an actual two day bear hunt that took place in 1906 in the Big Thicket. The hunting party consisted of 10 hunters led by Texas Legendary Hunters, Ben Lilly and Bud Hooks, and 8 hunting hounds. The music opens with a joyful fiddle theme representing nighttime around the campfire. As the night falls, the music quietens and percussion instruments (cabasa and woodblock) introduce crickets, woodpeckers and nighttime sounds. A rainstick and plucked strings bring the nighttime rain. With the morning, ascending strings herald the sunrise, with solo woodwinds bringing birdsong. The hunt theme is introduced by the brass. The bear theme is played by the bassoon, who is surrounded by bees, played by dissonant strings. As the hunt begins, the bear becomes alarmed, then the chase ensues. The high point of the chase arrives with an orchestra hit. The piece concludes with a triumphant return to the campsite. This fun piece is enjoyed by musicians and audiences for the fun melodies and unusual percussion sounds, length approx 12 minutes..

The star guided many along the way to find the manger that Mary, Joseph and the newborn baby, Jesus were at. This cantata reflects the importance of the star during that time. Most of the songs have lyrics about the star. The cantata starts off with Mary finding out from the angel that God chose her to bear his son - Ave Maria was redone for this advent moment. It keeps to the melody and Ave Maria words are still part of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have the English translation in the song, while other lyrics are new for this Christmas song. The next song O Little Town of Bethlehem is where Mary and Joseph have to travel to pay their taxes and where Jesus is born. This is where the star shines down for all to see. This is the traditional song, but I have added extra lyrics at the end of each original verse. Next, the shepherds seeing the star decide to travel to Bethlehem. Pachelbel Canon is so iconic, but I have added lyrics from While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. The choir parts bring rich harmonies to the piece. The Angels said leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up Shepherd and Follow. Now we are at the manger. I composed the song - A Little Baby. He was born to save us all. . Still, Still, Still “Tis the Night of Our Savior’s Birth has added lyrics to each verse that ties in with the original lyrics. The title of this cantata is They Saw A Star - this is from the song I composed with the same title. It not only brings in the shepherds, but also the Three Wisemen. To close out this cantata, I have used the lyrics from We Three Kings and the melody of Scarborough Fair. This arrangement has an SA duet with SSAA choir parts with ahhs that sound very mysterious. It also does include parts for strings if you are lucky enough to have violins and a cello. The strings parts are the same as the choir parts, so it is perfectly fine to do this with just a choir. Edition based on Ms. D MÜu, ms. 775Score (20 pages) and Parts (friendly performance edition): Violino principale, Violin I, Violin II, Violin III, Viola, Violoncello and Harpsichord.The Violin Concerto in A major (TWV 51:A4), which has come to light only fairly recently, does not take as its musical model the song of the nightingale (as in ‘La Bizarre’ [TWV 55:G2]) or of the goldfinch (Vivaldi), but the croaking of the common frog, also called ‘Reling’ in certain regions of Germany, whence the concerto’s subtitle. Nothing better could be expected of a composer who found inspiration even in crows and in the out-of-tune playing of village musicians! Although this concerto, which the manuscript attributes to Telemann, bears traces of his personal style, other features, such as the exceptionally high solo part, leave room for doubt. At a structurally important point in the first movement the soloist produces no more than a succession of repeated notes, ‘a-a, a-a’, which infect the other parts as well. Of course, this is the vowel that the frog croaks, given a distinctive tone-colour by use of the open A string and stopped D string. But worse is to come. In the second ritornello the orchestral violins ‘forget’ the beginning of their theme, whilst the cello inappropriately pushes its way into the foreground. The setting of the second movement (Adagio), probably a moonlit stretch of shallow water, then audibly inspires a pair of courting frogs to make sweet music together. We are given the opportunity to rejoice in their croaking offspring in the concluding Menuet and its rapid Double. This movement entirely dispenses with concertante sounds of nature and thereby betrays its origins in the suite, where it always takes its accustomed place in Telemann’s music. If we knew that a satirist was at work in this ‘Relinge’ Concerto, someone who was deliberately exhibiting all these deviations from good taste, then we could infer with some certainty that the composer is indeed Telemann. Since his own concertos ‘smack of France’ (as he puts it in his autobiography of 1718), we may most likely credit him with permitting his not at all ‘sullen old heart’ a little joke at the expense of the relevant concertos of a certain Italian composer… – Peter Huth (trans. Very well, then, he said, I shall sing that first line twice, and perhaps if I sing it very quickly, I shall find myself singing the third and fourth lines before I have time to think of them, and that will be a Good Song. Now then:Sing Ho! for the life of a Bear! Sing Ho! for the life of a Bear! I don't much mind if it rains or snows, 'Cos I've got a lot of honey on my nice new nose! I don't much care if it snows or thaws, 'Cos I've got a lot of honey on my nice clean paws! Sing Ho! for a Bear! Sing Ho! for a Pooh! And I'll have a little something in an hour or two! He was so pleased with this song that he sang it all the way to the top of the Forest, and if I go on singing it much longer, he thought, it will be time for the little something, and then the last line won't be true. As the title implies, it is music that possesses a certain dark energy. It evokes not so much a night of tranquility, but rather one of great intensity. The titles of the movements are poetic, not programmatic-each intends to give a sense of the mood that pervades the music. The Bearer of Bad News begins obsessively with re-iterations of a unison pitch. The movement unfolds lyrically outwards from this texture, finally reaching a climax in an intense return of the re-iterations, before a coda brings the energy back down. A Desperate Peace draws from the spirit of fierce lament. It evokes a line from Tecumseh of the Shawnee American Indian tribe: When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home. In Towards Morning an obsessive rhythmic pulse pushes the music forwards towards the coming day. The night’s dark energy, however, is not soon forgotten. The set includes a piano score and parts for Bb clarinet and tuba.
