Programme Notes Boudicca became the Queen of the Iceni upon the death of her husband, Prasutagus. The Iceni had lived in relative peace with the Romans, with Prasutagus living as a client king, paying tribute to Rome. The Romans refused to accept a woman as the ruler, and sought to assume total control. To demonstrate its superiority, a Roman Legion attacked the Iceni, captured Boudicca and made her watch as her daughters were raped. She sought revenge, allying the Iceni with the Trinovantes under her command, and wreaked havoc, destroying many Roman settlements. Boudicca was only stopped when Rome sent one of the best generals of the time, Seutonius Paulinus. Seutonius has been depicted offering Boudicca surrender with honour and her life, but when she rejected this, his tactical acumen proved superior, and all the Iceni and Trinovantes were wiped out. 1 – Boudicca Unites the Tribes The piece opens with the initial statement of Boudicca’s theme. Figure 3 depicts Boudicca’s reign as the leader of the Iceni, interspersed with a sadder theme depicting her lonely widowhood. Figure 4 sees the tribes called together with a drinking song and Figure 5 is the war cry, as Boudicca gives a rousing speech, first to her own warriors then to the Trinovantes. The second time bar before Figure 7 sees the tribes fall into a restless sleep. Amid early morning mists, Figure 7 sees restless horses, with distant fanfares heard, signalling the coming of the Romans. The Romans main theme is at Figure 8, with a constant fanfare over the top, signalling the confidence of the leaders. Figure 10 sees the Iceni and Trinovantes coming slowly out of hiding, and Boudicca’s theme growing in volume until the death chords signify the tribes have prevailed. 2. The Bards Sing The tribes sing a hymn to an unnamed Pagan God. At Figure 13, the Euphonium develops Boudicca’s theme depicting Taranis, the Bard of the Iceni, singing wistfully of happier times. He then makes an impassioned speech for peace, before cutting off in mid sentence. He then sits quietly (Figure 16) fearing the future. Figure 17 gives a euphoric and hopeful rendition of the hymn, as if Taranis has not been heard. 3 – Epping NB: It is my piece, and I say Epping is as credible as anywhere as the site of the final battle, and will not enter into any correspondence on the matter! A fanfare awakens the two tribes. Figure 18 sees the tribes prepare for a final battle, and the repeated section depicts two victories at Verulanium (St Albans) and Londinium (London – then a small barracks). At Figure 20 Taranis has a vision, and tries to change Boudicca’s mind about another attack. Boudicca listens to him, but tells him the die is cast, and there is no going back. Death or Glory… The war cry ensues at Figure 21, but at Figure 22 it is the Romans’ theme heard, and the death chords (Figure 24) signify that it is the two tribes that are being slaughtered this time. Brave souls (Repiano and Flugel at 24) fight on in vain to allow Boudicca to escape. At Figure 25 Boudicca prays, but realising all is lost, at Figure 26 drinks poison. As she dies, the last thing this brave British heroine hears is the sound of the Roman’s theme, signifying Seutonius’ total victory. William Elsom, December 2004

One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director ofmusic of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London.While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series inLondon. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octavemechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and begantouring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the«turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, throughChina and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It wasduring this period that he converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). Hesubsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyageswere subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection knownas The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution.Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. On March 27 1865, heperformed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire ImperialFamily. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.Souvenirs du Cap Bonne Espérence (Souvenirs of the Cap of Good Hope) begins with a dramatic aria, perhaps evoking the trip to the Cap which was, in the 19th century, still very dangerous. The Irish folksong « the Irish Emigrant » is presented as a them and in two variations. Finally an extended polka in rondo form finishes the work brilliantly.

When using a little lap harp, one can easily transpose the bass voice an octave higher. It is a flexible piece, you can play it slower or a little faster and even the arpeggio in the end that becomes quite easy after some practice could be replaced by a simple glissando. You should feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills, Your taste and Your Soul. It is a piece that can be used in many different kinds of situations, from the serious concert hall to a funeral, in Easter or even Christmas celebrations and all other kinds of Spiritual events or even joyful social meetings. When performed Live It will give you back a great feedback from the public, you will always want to have it in your repertoire. Luis Anjos Teixeira „Now comes the Little Story The Volcano`s Lake was composed on a volcano called Pico that stands out about 2000 meters above see level right in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. From the bottom of the ocean to its pick it is higher than mount Everest. I like to know that there are an enormous amount of different species of whales that live in this area and many others that go there strictly for romance. I went there to perform with the harp but was at the same time deeply morning the death of my Dear Cat Mary Jane that tragically passed away the day before the flight. In this isle I was having at night strange dreams of epic battles and fights between flying Angels and Demons. In one of these dreams „Time and Matter were a byproduct of „Music itself. The wind was blowing, the volcano was dancing and the water on the lake was whispering enchanting melodies. As soon as I woke up I wrote some notes before they vanished away, just a fragment of an idea of what I was listening in the dream. I named it „The Volcano`s Lake, because the „Lake was comforting me with its melodies, I realized that my tears were also becoming the lake itself and in this lake I was becoming one with Mary Jane and all the rest of the Universe. Thanks to Claudia Eppelt for the all the Love the wonderful painting and cover design. Â The natives keep out smarting him, and sabotaging his plans. Â Things get so out of hand, that he can't even keep his own people in line. Â This makes the Prefect irate and ill-tempered, more so to his own company, than to the natives! Â What am I to tell the queen?!. Â I can't have my name soiled like this!. Â Upon hearing that the Prefect's superior officer, the Legate of Iberia, will be coming to check up on his progress, he comes up with a plan. Â He'll make a deal with the natives to make it look like he's been kidnapped and murdered. Â Dressed as conquistadors, the natives won't say a word and the Prefect's second in command will say that he's been killed. Â To the Prefect's surprise, this actually worked and the Legate was fooled. Â Upon the Legate returning back to Iberia, the now defunct Prefect conquistador has made arrangements with the natives in exchange for food and supplies to fool the Legate each time he visits.This rousing march is a great opener or closer for any concert. Â Perfect for high school, college, or municiple/adult continuing level community band! Â The music here perfectly encapsulates this swashbuckling, yet haphazardous story!

More, the existing vocal arrangements I've heard are quite steady and not so rhythmic.So I tried to add some movement: there is a musical introduction with little lyrics and then we move on to the main theme, where the bass gives rhythm to the main melody.Shortly after, with a Queen-inspired variation coming from Bohemian Rhapsody the score modulates in a close key, to underline the singing of the brothers of the song's sad heroin and immediately after the theme softens to leave room to the sad mother heralding the coming tragedy.A tragedy that is sung immediately afterwards, in minor, and then returns to the main melody until the finale, where after a choral phrase we return to the main theme.

After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director ofmusic of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London. While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series in London. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octave mechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and began touring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the «turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, through China and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It was during this period that he converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). He subsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyages were subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection known as The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution. Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. On March 27 1865, he performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him. Soualle not only performed on the clarinet, saxophone and piano, but also frequently sang during his concerts. He also wrote songs while he was in London. His opera fantasies are usually written for the Alto saxophone and are generally in the form of an introductory aria with cadenza, a theme with one or more variations and then a final waltz movement in rondo form with a final brillant variation. This specific work opens with motives from the Opera‘s overture, leading to Donna Anna’s 1st act aria Or sai, chi l'onore. The duet Làci darem la mano is the subject of two variations followed by a brief interlude using Zerlina’s aria Batti, batti, o bel Masetto and then the final section is the duo Andiam’ Andiam ‘ Mio Bene between Don Giovanni and Zerlina which ends the Act I duet. Divertissement sur Une Ballade Irlandaise begins with a lyric introduction in bel canto style. The Irish Ballade is named in the score as « My Lodging is on the Cold Ground », but is sometimes known as « Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms » and is followed by a brilliant variation. After an ornamented modal passage in 6/8, the allemande theme is presented first in a moderate tempo, and then in a more rapid variant which uses « cross string » figerations similar to those used by fiddlers.

The work ends with a brillant and decidedly non-Scottish bolero, which was probably a piece that Soualle wrote while he was in Scotland.

For the bells there is an extra optional score that could be eventually used by a keyboard instrument. The percussion could be performed by 3 or 4 musicians. It consists of a set of cymbals „G, A and C, a splash or crash, an open triangle, a snare drum, One or 2 Gongs and a bass drum. For each voice in the ensemble score there is an individual part ready to print and an optional standard one. The parts are very easy to perform. The piece is can easily be adjusted to different situations. It is perfect for school ensembles and mixed groups of beginner students and advanced ones. A little story about this piece In my early teens I dreamed in my sleep that I met a very nice gentleman, in a beautiful garden. At the time I did not now that the man in my dream was my „genetic Grandpa himself, I had never seen a picture from him, only many years later after this dream. Now back to the Dream. Grandpa toke me from the garden to a House full of sculptures and art work. There was also a room with 3 great pianos, sat to perform on 3 different stages. Family life size portraits where hanging on a corridor. Another room was full of swords and ancient family weapons. In the end of the dream a dangerous Entity approached the house, Grandpa disappears and I had to leave the place in a hurry without being noticed. I climbed up the house and went hiding on the celling. I could than see a middle aged, middle-Lower class lady coming in the House, she was very stiff, all dressed in black like a widow. It was a very weary feeling, I woke up to never forget this dream. About 20 years later I was in that garden. It was really abandoned and I spend much of my time hanging there, I wrote a lot of music in this garden. I knew about The owner of this garden, he was living not so far away from me. Curious I decided to visit him. He leaved in the house that I dreamed of and he was actually my Father but I did not know that he was my Father and either did he knew about me being his son. He died shortly after we met. His name was Pedro Augusto Franco Dos Anjos Teixeira and my Grandpa was Artur Gaspar Dos Anjos Teixeira. Thanks to Claudia Eppelt for the all the Love and cover design.
