Published by Ben Ledochowski (A0.1023643). Far to the westernmost regions of Russia, and then farther still, there is a place known as theDancing Forest of Kaliningrad. It is a mysterious, otherworldly place where trees grow in tangles,knots, and other unfathomable shapes, a place described by local psychics as a point of conflict where great positive and negative forces collide. Due to its remarkable air of mystery, the forest has woven its way into the legends and folklore of the region. My personal favorite legend about it goes as follows: The Prussian prince Barty used to hunt in these forests. Chasing a Roe deer one day, heheard a wonderful tune, and as he came to a field, he saw a beautiful girl playing a lyre. She was a Christian and her name was Predislava. The prince proposed to her but she replied that she would marry only a man of her faith. Prince Barty agreed to become a Christian as long as she could prove the power of her invisible God was more powerful than the surrounding trees. Predislava played her lyre. Birds grew silent, and the trees started dancing. The prince then took a bracelet from his hand and gave it to her as a token of their betrothal. On this very spot, many years later, there grew the Dancing Forest.This piece is my homage to the Dancing Forest of Kaliningrad and all its associated legends. Premiered by the Santa Teresa High School Concert Band in May 2019, the work is scored for a concert band of intermediate size and skill level and is designed to help introduce high school musicians to modal music and unconventional key signatures. Furthermore, the piece is inspired by multiple rhythmic and harmonic elements of rock and folk music in an attempt to help bridge the gap between popular music and contemporary wind ensemble repertoire. Yoel Epstein #4285845. Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773330). These six songs have become icons of remembrance of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. They are traditionally played on Holocaust Day, which is on the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan in Israel, or January 27th in the rest of the world. Unter Dyne Vyse Shteren (Under the Starry Sky) was written by Avraham Sutskover, a leading Yiddish poet, while trapped in the ghetto of Vilna, in July 1943. Days before the ghetto was destroyed and all the Jews murdered, Sutskover escaped to the forest with his wife. He reached Russia, and in 1947 moved to Palestine. He died in Israel in 2010 at the age of 96. The poem was set to music by Avraham Brodna, a simple laborer in the Vilna ghetto who died in a concentration camp. Ani Maamin (I Believe): The words to this simple song are of the Jewish prayer I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah. The tune is attributed to Azriel David Festig, a leading Warsaw hazzan (cantor) who died in the Holocaust. The song was performed after the war by Rabbi Shaul Yedidia Eliezer Taub, the Admor (Rabbinical leader) of the Modzitz Hassidic sect, and has become the iconic song of the remembrance in the Hassidic community. Shtiller Shtiller (Hush Hush) was written by Alexander Volkovitzky, then a 12-year-old boy, in the Vilna Ghetto in the spring of 1943. Volkovitzky, who wrote the melody for a song contest organized to encourage the cultural life of the ghetto, eventually came to Israel where he (under the name Alexander Tamir) became a leading pianist and music educator. The words are by Shmerke Kacserginsky, a leading poet of Vilna, who later escaped the Holocaust and migrated to South America. Papirossen (Cigarettes) actually predates the Holocaust by 15 years. It was written by Yiddish actor and composer Herman Yablokoff in 1922 in Grodno, Poland. Yablokoff later immigrated to America, where he produced a musical Papirossen that incorporated the song. It was later made famous by the Barry Sisters, a Yiddish popular music group. Donna Donna was written by Shalom Secunda, with words by Aaron Zeitlin for the Yiddish musical Esterke in 1940. Though the song originally related to the 600-year-old legend of a Polish king who married a Jewess, it quickly became associated with the Holocaust because of its haunting message. The song has entered the popular folk repertoire, with canonical renditions by Joan Baez, Theodore Bikel, and many others. Hatikva (the Hope) is Israel's national anthem. The words are by Naftali Zvi Imber, and the tune is a traditional eastern European tune. You are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. Flute-represents a bird’s call.Trombone-carries the sound and theme of the crow throughout the piece.Triangle-is the soft sound of noises in the woods, that are so low that they are often not heard.Maracas-represents the rattlesnake’s rattle when he is disturbed and angry.Wood Blocks-represent the sound of the woodpecker.Bass Guitar-is the background of the piece and sometimes the edgy feeling one gets when walking in (what they thought) was an empty forest.Piano-is the crow’s call.Tenor Voice-is meant to represent a cry in the forest but is only included twice in the piece.Cello-Is also the background music but gives one the feeling of coldness creeping upon them. The piece is meant to be slow, and eerie; maybe to some it sounds spacey.The glissandos for the Bass Guitar are to be played when the guitarist hits the first note and uses a glass cup against the string and slowly move it up and down the string to make a weird vibrato like sound.The glissandos for the Trombone are mainly the echoes of the forest that surround the person. It’s the crow’s call being echoed.The Piano can play with the crow’s call starting out loud then fading or diminishing as it also echoes in the distance. Not to be played too fast.The Flute can get louder as it repeats its lines.The Triangle is soft but not too soft. It must be able to be heard against the other instruments.The Cello may use as much vibrato or screech sounds as it wants with the use of the bow.The Tenor may use as much legato as they want.

Unlike the piece that comes beforehand, this work is for two tubas and piano. Once the member of the caravan gets out of the mountain, he sees their destination ahead of them: the last city on Earth. He sees his caravan coming out of the mountain pass, and he runs to them, excited to see them. To get to the city, they must journey along a long and dangerous road to the city, which runs right through a gigantic forest that separates the mountain pass and the city. They have heard rumors of a giant monster that lives in the forest, but that he doesn't attack people on the road. I guess they will find out whether the rumor is true...

In the King’s Forest is broken into Three distinct settings, all using the same melody based on the introductory fanfare-like melody. The first setting is at the edge of the forest and is light and more thinly arranged, focusing on the upper voices. The second setting is further into the forest and uses the same melody in the mid voices, but harmonized more heavily. The third setting is deep in the forest and the melody shifts from Bb Major to C Minor and is the most densely arranged. We break through the forest to the other side with a return of the intro fanfare and ends with a triumphant sequence of main theme back in Bb Major. Using the first six notes of the Bb Scale and simple rhythmic figures, In the King’s Forest offers young band students a chance to perform and connect to mature musical content.

From a musical standpoint, the thick, rich chords of the right hand create a feeling of majesty and awe broken by the melismatic figures of the wind through the boughs. Once again, it is of great importance to balance the chords to bring forth the melody.

This is the first publication of a new Christmas song, set for baritone and piano. The words are those of a poem by Leonard Clark (1905 – 1981), an English poet who was raised in The Forest of Dean, in the west of England. In 1972 he published a slim little book of Christmas poems, of which ‘Singing in the Streets’ is one, surely one of the most appealing of Christmas poems. It gives its name to the book. The poem tells of an older man revisiting the village of his boyhood, and wondering whether, somehow, the streets still hold the sound of the carols that he and the other boys and girls sang there. It begins: ‘I had almost forgotten the singing in the streets,Snow piled up by the houses, drifting Underneath the door into the warm room, …’ It is very evocative of that time and of the magic that Christmas always holds for children. Drawn from the same book of poems there is available another new Christmas song, called The Birth; that one is set in two versions, one for voice and piano and the other for SATB a cappella. Ian Calvert.

Published by Personal Sun Music (A0.1025958). TWO EPISODES FROM DARK FOREST was originally conceived as a violin concerto. As I was writing the concerto, I was suddenly struck with the idea that I could distribute the virtuosic passages across four instruments instead of giving them all to just the violin, which would make for a great string quartet. There would be challenging passages, intensity and action in all of the parts, serious interactivity, and an enhanced narrative flow. The two episodes portrayed here were originally the third and fourth movements of the concerto. What resulted is something of a group showcase, a feature for the whole quartet, with a lot of fiery passages being passed around in quick succession. CHASE THROUGH THE FOREST is a headlong dash, quick and fun, with a sneaky fast rock feel, plenty of thrills, and a little bit of silent movie melodrama thrown in. In the middle of the movement an aggressive virtuosic duel breaks out, utilizing a lot of double-stops, pitting the two violins against one another, with some nasty interjections from the viola and cello. Following the abrupt and unexpected end of the chase scene, THE JOURNEY HOME arrives as wistful, lyrical and nostalgic, pure sentiment. It's an orchestrated song, with expressive, expansive and eventually intimate melodies.

The Forest became his great passion and inspiration; much of his poetry reflects that upbringing and often relates to nature. In 1972 he published a slim little book of Christmas poems, of which ‘The Birth’ is one. What I like about this poem is its simplicity and clarity – and its narrative development through the verses. It starts with the poet waking in the pre-dawn. He then realizes that it is Christmas Day and in the stillness of that time his mind turns to the birth of Jesus, as traditionally told; tenors and basses start this verse. Then he steps out of time and space and looks through his bedroom window to contemplate the mystery of incarnation; sopranos and altos begin this third verse.
