Published by Roger Ramirez (A0.1024067). Approximate Duration: 6' 15This piece is inspired by the 1925 poem by T.S. Eliot, The Hollow Men. The piece utilizes serialism inspired techniques in order to better demonstrate the time period and subject matter of the poem. The juxtaposition of very high and very low notes emphasizes the hollow nature of the poem and furthers it with a sense of misdirection. This is done by taking recurring parts and flipping them backwards, cutting twelve-tone rows in half and putting them in two different instruments, and by having interjections that resemble the impressionist period that came before. The end of the piece quotes the nursery rhyme Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush in a sort of dark, twisted way, much like The Hollow Men poem does. The ending is morphed to fit a very hollow feeling and to convey the final lines of the poem: This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper.rogerramirezmusic.com

Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755334). I. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The interpretation of this adage is that one always wants what someone else has instead of accepting one’s own uniqueness. During the movement, counterpoint is used to depict one instrument copying another. Towards the middle of the movement, tuba 2 eventually realizes its independence and states a bold melody of its own. The movement ends with the euphonium 1 playing its melody alone with pauses between the phrases as if looking over its shoulder wondering where the other musicians are. II. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. This setting represents a growing love despite the emptiness of being apart. Hollow intervals of fourths and fifths representing longing, occur at the beginning and end. A short love duet between two instruments occurs in the middle. III. Time flies when you are having fun. A rollicking six-eight meter is used to represent a children’s game of tag. There is a lot of alternation of short phrases as if one instrument is trying to tag the other and the other is trying to avoid being tagged. The dissonance and short accented notes represent taunting. IV. Every cloud has a silver lining. This movement is a prayer-like setting with alternation of minor and major harmonies representing the cloud and the silver lining respectively. V. He who hesitates is lost. This movement is very rhythmic and syncopated with the instruments alternating phrases in the manner of a call and response. It calls for split-second precision between the performers, therefore representing the adage. VI. A rolling stone gathers no moss. The last movement is a perpetual motion in a rolling six-eight meter. The musical ideas are very chromatic with the exception of main theme that appears first as a solo melody, then as several instruments together, and later as instruments in imitation. Towards the end, there are a few brief pauses and low accented notes as a life of activity has a few bumps along the way.

The Revelations of Divine Love (Metaphors from Sea and Sky) (2009), an oratorio for soprano,baritone, chorus, and chamber orchestra (0000.1100.1perc.strings), was commissioned for and is dedicated to the choir ofRoyal Holloway, University of London and Rupert Gough, director of choral music.The texts of the work are adapted primarily from the writings of Julian of Norwich (c. 1342–1416).Julian is best-known for her Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love (c. 1393), believed to be the first Englishlanguagebook written by a woman. Considered one of the most significant English mystics of alltime, Julian lived a reclusive life as an anchoress at the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, England (hertrue name is unknown). Regarded even during her lifetime as a spiritual authority, her optimisticvisions have been very influential in the years that have followed.Texts are also drawn from three additional sources: an excerpt from the Book of Margery Kempe(translated by Christopher M. Brunelle), two poems by English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674),and a poem by the American writer Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955).The primary concept underlying this oratorio is the presence of two distinct discourses. One is asequence taken from Julian’s religious visions. The other is a sonic geography of Nantucket Island(located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States). This interconnected conceptwas inspired by the writings of the great Scottish poet George Mackay Brown (1921–1996). Livinghis entire life on Scotland’s Orkney Islands, Mackay Brown consistently explored the transpositionof religious imagery and events to his native landscape. (For example, the poem Apple-Basket, Apple-Blossom takes the story and structure of the Stations of the Cross, and maps them onto imagery ofdistinctly Orcadian character.)The landscape of Nantucket Island has been the driving force behind a large number of mycompositions for many years. In this oratorio, Julian’s visions are transposed from Norwich andmapped onto the Nantucket landscape. Each movement of the work thus has two parallel purposes:a setting of the visionary words, and a portrayal of a specific place in Nantucket’s geography. Muchof the music was planned in the actual locations. Since the soloists and choir must, by necessity, singthe words, a great deal of the landscape is left to the orchestra. Thus, the orchestra’s role issubstantially greater than simply accompaniment.Because of these two discourses, the oratorio is not intended as comprehensive working out of allaspects of Julian’s visions, nor does it use her own structure and sequence. Rather, it takes herbeautiful words, and the fundamentals of her visions, and attempts to create a new narrative andspiritual experience from them.This is the full score. In these 112 measures for the twinning of Istanbul-Algeciras I have wanted to incorporate concepts from both parties, with the respect that the composition of Don Joan Manuel Serrat deserves in which in 1970 he sang “Mare Nostrum†(Nostrum mare more correctly in Latin classic, being one of the popular anthems of Spain and therefore a cultural heritage.
