'Brass Machine' is a new work for Wind Band composed earlier this year. Throughout the piece you can hear the 'chimes' (Glock & Crotales) in strict rhythm whilst around it the pulse in the ensemble is not always so. The piece is divided into three sections, played continuously without breaks between them. The Largo at measure 190 is the central section, here we hear the 'chime' being spread throughout the ensemble and from letter F to the following Allegretto the 'machine' is trying to get back to full energy. There then follows a phased accerlerando towards the final chord. Enjoy.

Published by James Haynor (A0.782165). The Program Music Suite consists of three movements : Order, Tranquility and Menace. As the name program music implies, each movement portrays an emotion or situation. Order is meant to invoke a machine-like, assembly line, factory feeling. Toward the end, someone throws a monkey wrench into the works and everything grinds to a halt. The bass drum signifies someone kicking the machine and restarting it. The piece fades out to signify the end of the day. Tranquility, as the name implies, evokes feelings of peace and contentment through the use of a flowing melody and lush harmonies. Menace, in contrast, brings the suite to an end, starting with a threatening build up, begun in the percussion. It then crescendos into a rather energetic and loud wind up, with rising and falling lines, before a dramatic spill to a close. The suite is very playable and a fresh sound for your audiences. Song of the Jet, translated literally as Airplane Samba) is a Brazilian song composed in 1962 by Antônio Carlos Jobim, who also wrote the original Portuguese lyrics. The English-language lyrics are by Gene Lees.In the biography Antonio Carlos Jobim: An Illuminated Man, Helena Jobim describes how her brother came up with the idea for the song: Tom's many walks from Ipanema to Santos Dumont Airport yielded that ode of beauty... He would head towards the airport, following the water's edge around Guanabara's Bay. The pretext to go there was to buy foreign magazines and newspapers. From Santos Dumont Airport he could observe his passion, the airplane. Yet he still kept some distance from those machines. He was afraid of flying, but he loved their power, splendor, and aerodynamics-man's conquest over machine.In the song, Jobim writes about landing at Galeão in Rio de Janeiro. The airport was renamed in his honor in 1999 and is now called Rio de Janeiro–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport.Jobim wrote Samba do Avião for an Italian film, Copacabana Palace (1962), where it was performed by Jula De Palma and I 4 + 4 di Nora Orlandi. The movie was filmed in Rio and features cameo appearances by Jobim, João Gilberto and Os Cariocas.The first performance of the song was by Jobim and Os Cariocas in August 1962 at the Au Bon Gourmet restaurant in Copacabana, Rio, at what music historian Ruy Castro calls the bossa nova show to end all bossa nova shows, as it featured Jobim, João Gilberto, VinÃcius de Moraes and Os Cariocas on stage together for the only time.The first recording of the song was released in October 1962 by Elza Laranjeira. Os Cariocas had a hit with their rendition in 1963.The first English-language version was by Tony Bennett for his 1965 album If I Ruled the World: Songs for the Jet Set.Here is my brass quintet version of the song for your enjoyment.

Composer’s Note - Sifting the StarsIn 2015 I was commissioned by Sydney Philharmonia Choirs to create a Christmas show for kids. Being me, I decided that I wanted to make it a narrative show because I’m ambitious that way. It was called Cog in the Machine (a family Christmas tale with a twist) and alongside the carols was a gentle commentary on the commercialisation of the festive season, and how our priorities of family celebration are often overshadowed by the extravagance of gift giving.One of the main characters in the story is a smart, sassy teenage girl called Stella. She loves science, particularly astronomy (hence the name!) and it was therefore a family tradition for her to put the star on the top of the Christmas tree each year. This particular Christmas, she has a bit of a disagreement with her mother and as she’s putting the star on the tree, she goes into a kind of dream sequence, floating about the galaxies inside her head, trying to process her adolescent need for independence and protection in equal amounts. This is a funky straight up blues tune that I've had for a while. Built around a steady, mechanical riff laid out in the bass guitar and guitar, this work features plenty of soli playing throughout the different sections. The smeary main theme, introduced by alto and bari sax in unison, is later picked up by the rest of the section as well as the trumpets in the playout at the end. The saxophones in particular are strongly encouraged to make the most out of the bends, scoops and dips as indicated. There is an open solo chorus for a guitar solo. This tune has gone by many names in my mind over the years (Texas Trout, Rudie-Nudie Blues, I Think Your Dog Has Worms), but have at last settled on Blues Against The Machine for the main title, as I think this captures the contrast between the bluesy melody with the machine-like riff.

Born in Ankara in 1976, Metin Yilmaz started his formal musical education at the Bilkent University, Department of Musical Composition in the Faculty of Performing Arts. He studied with Hatira Ahmetli on “Taniyev’s Harmony and Musical Pedogogyâ€. He continued his musical studies with Arif Melikov in Baku Music Academy following a special invitation. He performed in four concerts which included his own compositions that were broadcasted on Russian NTV, Azerbaijan State Televisions. He participated in Rostropovitch’s musicality and instrumental composition master classes. He pariticipated in seminars along with Russian and Iranian composers in International Zagulba Composition Festival that took place in Baku. His interviews from these seminars were published in various mediums. Some of his pianoworks were represented in various concerts and recorded by known pianist Yuri Savetskin. He completed his composition education in Turkey with Aydın Azimov in Mersin University State Conservatorium and graduated in the first place. Soon after his graduation he perfırmed and conducted his own piano concerto “SARI†with Mersin Youth Symphony Orchestra. While working as an academic instructor in Çukurova State Conservatorium he also instructed piano in Mersin Fine Arts High School. Later he instructed in Baskent State Conservatorium. His arrangements and compositions are performed in Antalya, Bodrum and Ankara by Baskent University Academic Orchestra. He continued his master’s and artistic proficiency in Baku Music Academy with Arif Melikov and in Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatorium with Igor Dranov. His composition “Geveze†(Babbler) was deemed worthy for the first place in Yamaha International Composition Competition and was performed in America, Germany, Italy and China. He participated and performed in various concerts and organizations in Ankara, Baku and Tiblisi Jazz Festivals and jazz Clubs and started Babel Project music community that arranged concerts. The modal jazz and Turkish music arrangements draw attention and his workshops inspired many young jazz musicians. He composed and arranged documentary and titles compositions that were broadcasted on Turkish National Radio and Television and other broadcasting institutions. He thought Music Theory & Culture and participated in foundation of Atilim University Department of Jazz. He thought in Yildirim Beyazıt University State Conservatorium. He broadcasted “HAFIZAMDAKI MAKAMLAR†in Turkish National Television that explored music of architecture. He is the board chairman of Musical Therapy Education and Research Association and general director of School of Art Machine that evolved into Babel Project Music Ltd. His musical compositions fuse elements of traditional, contemporary and classical music styles in a natural sense of integrity blended with mature emotional expressiveness.

Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1356528). Doctor Who follows the adventures of the title character, a rogue Time Lord with somewhat unknown origins who goes by the name the Doctor. The Doctor fled Gallifrey, the planet of the Time Lords, in a stolen TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension(s) in Space), a time machine that travels by materialising into, and dematerialising out of, the time vortex. The TARDIS has a vast interior but appears smaller on the outside, and is equipped with a chameleon circuit intended to make the machine take on the appearance of local objects as a disguise. Due to a malfunction, the Doctor's TARDIS remains fixed as a blue British police box. The main theme was originally composed by Ron Grainer but this version is based on what Murray Gold wrote.
