Published by Ivo Antognini (A0.1211209). In this Trinity Service (2021) I used the text of the Magnificat as if it were the storyboard of a film. I tried to describe in the utmost detail the emotion the words conveyed to me and the images they suggested. In this composition I have used word-painting, attempting to colour as many words, phrases and situations as possible; hence the score is full of expression markings such as ‘majestic’, ‘with vigour’, ‘lively’, ‘intense’, ‘with affection’ and ‘with verve’. The result is a piece that changes texture rather quickly, and its noble opening theme (‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’) returns only once in abbreviated form (‘He hath filled the hungry with good things’). The following Nunc dimittis has a much more meditative and intimate character with a sparser texture. There are some references to the themes presented in the Magnificat. A motif from the Magnificat, ‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son’, recurs in almost the same form towards the close of the Nunc dimittis, but in a quieter vein and in 4 rather than the 43 of the Magnificat. The Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis may be performed individually.

The Acts of the Apostles (2009), an oratorio for baritone, chorus, congregation/audience, and chamber orchestra (piano, organ, strings-suggested minimum of 3.3.3.2.1),was commissioned by The Memorial Church at Harvard University. It is dedicated to Edward Elwyn Jones and theHarvard University Choir.The biblical books of Luke and Acts form a pair of documents from a single author and with a single audience (thelikely-metaphorical “Theophilusâ€), yet they are unusual for being composed in such contrasting genres. Luke’sgospel, using Mark as a primary source throughout, features a comparable literary style to that of the otherevangelists. Acts, by contrast, is a historical monograph that charts the birth of the Church with dramatic storiesabout—and speeches from—the apostles, painting a vivid, if not necessarily chronological, picture of their victoriesand struggles. As such, it is a book that provides excellent source material for a dramatic choral libretto of this scale.Although much of Acts is focused on the ministry of Saul/Paul, this oratorio draws most of its material from thefirst third of the book, prior to and including the conversion of Saul. In the Prologue, Christ’s ascension is narratedand—following an orchestral Sinfonia—the chorus sings words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Plain in Luke’sgospel that foreshadow many of the trials the apostles go on to face. The astounding account of Pentecost follows:here, words from the book of Ruth, customarily read on the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), are included, telling thestory of a Moabite woman who converted to the Israelite faith—a parallel to the expansion of the Christian messageto all nations by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Prayer for Boldness, quoting Psalm 2, asks God for protection fromthe threats of persecution that the apostles will now face.Stephen, regarded as the proto-martyr of the Christian Church, offers one of the most developed speeches in Acts,only a small portion of which is presented here. Full of scriptural references, including the quotation from Isaiah“Heaven is my throne…â€, the end of the narrative is remarkable for two reasons: firstly, Stephen’s final wordsmirror those of Christ on the cross in Luke’s gospel—where Jesus forgives his executioners and prays “Father, intoyour hands I commend my spirit†(Luke 23:46); secondly, Saul is specifically mentioned as one who approved ofStephen’s stoning, indicative of the redemptive possibilities of the Christian message.The account of the baptism of the Ethiopian eunuch here in the oratorio ends with the First Song of Isaiah—whilenot quoted in Acts, it seems a fitting conclusion to the scene as Philip and the eunuch were reading Isaiah together,and the canticle has often been associated by Christians with the rite of baptism. Similarly, the story of Saul’sConversion is followed here by a Christological poem found in Paul’s letter to the Philippians, though it is likely aquotation from an earlier source. It is often regarded as the earliest extant Christian hymn.The Acts of the Apostles concludes with Luke’s realistic assessment that in spite of Paul’s energetic evangelism manyremained unconvinced by the Christian message. At the heart of both Luke’s gospel and Acts is the tension betweenthe uniquely important role of the Jewish traditions that Jesus himself practiced and the expansion of the gospel togentiles, of whom Luke himself is one. It is appropriate, therefore, to follow Paul’s message of salvation to thegentiles with the Magnificat: a canticle that emphasizes the promises of God to the people of Israel throughouthistory.Three traditional hymn texts are found in the oratorio, each set congregationally to a pre-existing tune. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998730). This is a lively, singable and catchy setting of these traditional words used at Choral Evensong. The piece features much syncopation in the jazz-like Magnificat, with its repetitive, minimalist accompaniment figures. Meanwhile, the hypnotic Nunc Dimittis repeats its key phrase, as a voice part is added in turn each time. Both movements end in the customary manner with the Gloria, which is based on the Magnificat's opening. The text is in English, adapted from Luke 1: 46-55 and Luke 2: 29-32. This setting is appropriate for most standards of 4-part choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs. The accompaniment can be on organ or can be easily adapted by a pianist. There is a further version of this work, for solo or unison voices, also from Sheet Music Plus. The Gloria alone is similarly available in various versions as 'Gloria Patri', again from SMP.Â

You may be able to guess some of the characters whose leitmotifs in the oratorio are used in this setting. In particular, the lesser doxology (Glory be to the Father) makes great use the theme of Eeyore, the complaining donkey. The sound sample is performed by Matthew Curtis of choraltracks.com.

It is traditionally incorporated into the liturgical services of various Christian denominations, including the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Lutheran Churches, and the Anglican Communion.This is the second release in a series of three SATB a cappella canticles for the Liturgy of the Hours. The first one, Nunc Dimittus was released in late 2023. The third one, Benedictus, will be released sometime in 2025. They will then be available as a set as well as individually.

Having this in mind I have chosen to develop at once, beside the main verses of the Psalm De Profundis (130) the first verse of the Magnificat (Lc. 1:47). Heartbreaking cry of supplication the first one, Ecstatic shout of joy the second one, both conveys together, little by little, more and more, until to become a profound sole expression of faith and gratitude: ‘De Profundis, Magnificat!’, 'Out of the deep, my soul magnifies the Lord!’, Out of the deep, my soul magnifies You, my Lord!'.  The composer

Latin.Magnificat is a tribute to the unaccompanied motets of favourite composers from several eras – in particular those of Dufay, the Eton Choirbook, Robert Carver, Lassus and Bach. The work is therefore full of contrast in texture, harmony, mood and pacing, and exploits the resources of unaccompanied chorus in a manner not only analogous to those already mentioned but also to ensemble or orchestral writing. Naturally – given the sentiments of the text – the mood is predominantly joyful and exuberant; but the darker implications of certain phrases in the text are not ignored. Towards the end there is a big choral explosion on one of the traditional plainsong chants for the Magnificat, before the work subsides into a coda of calm serenity. Magnificat was commissioned by the ORA choir. It is dedicated to the French composer Betsy Jolas, in celebration of her 90th birthday, and in equal celebration of our mutual love of many choral composers mentioned above.

The other motet in this set is a setting of the Nunc dimittis (Song of Simeon). Using the standard ICET English texts, both motets serve many liturgical functions but of course may be sung at other times as well. If performed in a concert, these motets may be performed individually or as a set since both are in F major. The O Antiphons, or the Great Advent Antiphons, are a series of ancient texts sung before the Magnificat canticle during Vespers on the seven days before Christmas Eve. They date to the sixth century, and have their origins in Old Testament titles for the coming Messiah. These settings, in English, of the O Antiphons were written for SCHOLA HYBERNIAE, an all-female ensemble specialising in Gregorian Chant and early polyphony. Of special interest to the group is music from early manuscripts associated with Irish saints. These short choral vignettes can be performed as a set, or as individual reflective pieces in liturgy throughout the season of Advent. When sung in concert setting, I envisage that the chant antiphon is sung before each choral presentation, and have incorporated references to chant, organum, and open harmony throughout.

The piece features much syncopation in the jazz-like Magnificat, with its repetitive, minimalist accompaniment figures. Meanwhile, the hypnotic Nunc Dimittis repeats its key phrase several times, with increasing dynamics. Both movements end in the customary manner with the Gloria, which is based on the Magnificat's opening. The text is in English, adapted from Luke 1: 46-55 and Luke 2: 29-32. This work is appropriate for most standards of soloist or unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs. The accompaniment is for organ but can be adapted by a good pianist. The SATB version of the work is also available via Sheet Music Plus. The Gloria alone, in various versions, is available via SMP as 'Gloria Patri'.

The 'Nunc Dimittis' portrays the calm and steady faith of old Simeon and his awe and final fulfillment upon seeing the baby Jesus at the end of a long life of waiting. The 'Gloria Patri' at the end of both sections of this work is grand and lyrical with soaring vocal lines and emotive harmonies.
