Feelings so immense that words do them no justice. It is at such junctures that artists often turn to abstract creative endeavors to facilitate process- ing the pain. There is frequently no option. As with the navigation of grief, this music has hopeful and even joyous moments. But despair is never far from the surface.Throughout the Lament the bass clarinet takes on the role of the mourner. The melodic lines are at times sad, confused, hopeful, prayerful, or even playful. There is a continuous sense of searching, for answers, for reasons, for a resolution that can never be. The marimba offers solace, empathy, compassion, and distraction to the dolorous melody.A tone of sorrow is established by the marimba with its evocative minor key introduction. The aria begins as the bass clarinet presents a plaintive expression of the main melody. Soon, a rhythmic mood settles in, the bass clarinet yearning and searching for answers, as the marimba offers support with jazz inspired harmonies. There are hints of melancholia, of nostalgia, even a very brief waltz, as the feelings spin freely.The tale ends as it begins, with a return to the opening sound world. A return to plainly stated sorrow, unadorned, pure, simple. After a final tender plea, bringing the bass clarinet quietly to its highest range, it descends to the depths, where it hoovers, pondering.PERFORMANCE NOTESTempi and phrasing are subject to the performersâ?? musical conception. Interpret this as one would Brahms: molto espressivo, and highly romantic.

While not very religious, I've always loved Jewish music. To that end, I sought out to write something that wasn't an arrangement of an already existing tune but wasn't also a more obscure prayer that only the more religious people would know, both of which I've done before. In addition, I wanted to write something oriented more toward a concert rather than a religious setting.Oseh Shalom comes from the last part of the Mourner's Kaddish, a longer prayer recited in memory of the dead. It is not only said in sadness, however. Many settings of the prayer, including Debbie Friedman's and Nurit Hirsh's, which are the settings I grew up singing, are very festive. Prior to performing the piece, he spoke to the assembled mourners with the following prepared text:It does no disservice to laugh or smile - or, yes, to cry - when remembering Zayne. He is a part of your life and always will remain so. You carry him into your future with you.Likewise, it does him no service to unjustly obsess over things that are now unchangeable. Things said that cannot be unsaid. Things done that cannot be undone. Things not done that you feel you should have done. It does not serve Zayne or anyone to beat yourself up over such things, because then you just carry pain and sadness into your future with you, when you could be carrying -and sharing-the joy, the love, and the lessons you learned from having Zayne in your life for the time that you did.All that you can do is what you can do now. Let those who are here now know that you love them and you are here for them.
