Floating, Falling, Flying depicts the odyssey of two balloons who find themselves suddenly and blissfully untethered.  It presents a musical narrative of their unpredictable journey through the skies, back to earth, and, eventually, into the stratosphere. The piece was commissioned by Music Teachers National Association for the 2022 National Conference.  It is a trio for oboe, violin and piano written for students at the intermediate to advanced-intermediate level.  Composed in three contiguous movements, it involves three characters – the balloons (portrayed by the oboe and violin) and the wind (represented by the piano).  In the opening movement (Floating), the balloons escape their moorings and ascend into free space, floating playfully among the clouds with the help of a gentle wind. But, as in life, journeys are not always peaceful.  The second movement (Falling) opens with a hint that something is not quite right.  Undaunted, the balloons continue their carefree ascent amid the ominous signs of an approaching storm.  The wind ultimately asserts its authority, pummeling the balloons back to earth.  As they lie helplessly on the ground, they assess each other’s condition and make feeble attempts to relaunch.  But, without wind, their situation seems hopeless.  In the final movement (Flying), hope is restored as a quiet breeze lifts the intrepid pair back into the air.  They resume their skyward adventure with renewed vigor and joy – dancing through the clouds and, ultimately, out of sight.Floating, Falling, Flying is an exciting and challenging piece for student concerts, recitals and Solo and Ensemble festivals.Brian Chung is a pianist, arranger, composer, conference speaker, former Senior Vice Present of Kawai America Corporation, and author or co-author of four books published by Alfred Music.  He was honored to participate in MTNA’s Collaborative Music Commissioning Project with this composition.

A rich, expressive, melodic piece written idiomatically for the cello's voice; easy for a performer to personalize. Appropriate for intermediate students, but certainly challenging enough to be of interest to professionals as well. Program Notes: This work is the third of three solo cello pieces written for Micah Claffey on pastoral/nature themes. The title refers to the surface of a body of water as one’s head breaks through after a long and strenuous swim beneath it. The core of this work is about defining the character of peace through the odyssey of a single cello’s musical voice. The peace theme starts as just a seed in the beginning; incomplete; represented by the first four notes (a pitch class: 0,4,6,7 or inverted as 0,1,3,7). The cello then plunges into tempestuous waters, but the seed is never lost throughout all the metamorphoses it goes through and all the commotion that surrounds it and this middle section becomes a time of catharsis and refinement. Finally, in the latter third of the work, the theme of peace breaks the surface in its complete form, starting out timidly, but soon climaxing to a powerful and penetrating statement and ending with a sense of relief, clarity, and renewal that exist not in spite of the tumultuous journey, but because of it. This is a solo classical guitar 'mashup'/medley of Also Sprach Zarathustra (widely known from film 2001: A Space Odyssey) by Richard Strauss with the traditional Happy Birthday song. It begins with Also Sprach Zarathustra (the portion from 2001: A Space Odyssey)--then at the penultimate dominant chord, switches to Happy Birthday in a similar style, then at the Happy Birthday penultimate dominant chord, returns to the final three melody chords of Also Sprach Zarathustra. The playing level is intermediate classical guitar... even playable by a good early intermediate player. This arrangement is in standard notation with TAB. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.912905). According to Homer (Odyssey iv:412), the sandy island of Pharos, situated off the coast of the Nile delta, was the home of Proteus, the old god of the sea. In the Odyssey, Menelaus relates to Telemachus that he had been becalmed here on his journey home from the Trojan War. He learned from Proteus’ daughter Eidothea that if he could capture her father, he could force him to reveal which of the gods he had offended and how he could propitiate them and return home. Proteus emerged from the sea to sleep among his colony of seals, but Menelaus was successful in holding him, though Proteus took the forms of a lion, a serpent, a leopard, a pig, even of water or a tree. Proteus then answered truthfully, further informing Menelaus that his brother Agamemnon had been murdered on his return home, that Ajax the Lesser had been shipwrecked and killed, and that Odysseus was stranded on Calypso’s Isle Ogygia. This piece, for solo tenor sax, illustrates that mighty conflict between Menelaus and Proteus. Each movement illustrates a different form the god took in his attempt to evade sharing his knowledge. Composition The rhythmic motives are based on the ancient Greek poetic meters. I translated these patterns of long and short sounds to musical notation (using the sixteenth note as the basic unit). I randomized the order and deployed the resulting phrase as a sort of idee fixe. Each movement uses this rhythmic idea beginning at a different point. The melodic content is based on a pentatonic set and its permutations, primarily its modes. I arrayed these pitches into a grid (not unlike the matrix used in dodecaphonic music) and assigned pitches to the rhythmic motives using differing deployment schemes (rotation, chaining, etc).
