By practicing the patterns in this book, students will recognize and be able to play the scale, chord, and arpeggio patterns when they encounter them in more advanced music. The scales introduced in this book are one-octave scales in the major keys of C, G, D, A, E, F, Bâ™, and Eâ™. Each scale is introduced in hands-separately patterns, followed by hands-together patterns. Included with each scale is a theory section that asks for the key’s tonic, sub-dominant, and dominant notes and corresponding chords. These primary chords are shown on the staff as a common cadence, giving students the opportunity to become comfortable with reading them and playing them. Also included are several improvisating and tranposing exercises that will give students the tools needed to perform with confidence.

Rhapsody – Wind of the Sea By Brendan Reeves This piece, Rhapsody – Wind of the Sea, takes the listener on a melodic ride over the waves and winds of the ocean. The piece is grounded in an E major 7th chord which, despite being a 7th chord, serves tonic function throughout the piece. The piece begins with several arpeggios in moderato, which are meant to symbolize rolling waves. Much like waves, they are not in perfect time. The piece is very felt and performed with passion rather than strict attention to meter. Dynamic is the primary focus. The melody is presented three times in the beginning of the piece, after which the dream sequence begins. The dream sequence is characterized by stanzas differentiated by dynamic marking. This crescendos into the next section symbolizing the wind on the sea, beginning on Measure 53. The transition is from a previously stable tonic E major 7th chord. With the naturalization of the D, it becomes an E dominant 7th chord and becomes the V7 chord of A major (Secondary Dominant). In an instant flourishing A lydian scale, the listener is taken into a new melodic world in A lydian. The piece then diminishes back down into the waves of the dream pattern at measure 70. The piece finishes off tempo with one last final, symbolic, arpeggio; a calm after the tempest.

Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977034). Each of these four short pieces has its own character, color and rhythmic flow. Because the interplay between parts is sometimes complex and challenging, they can provide wonderful ensemble workouts for performers as well as fun and exciting musical experiences for audiences. The title Harmonic Spaces refers to both the idea that they are musical spaces filled with colors and characters as well as to the widely-spaced harmonic intervals upon which those aspects are built. Each movement is based on one or two wide intervals that mimic the spacing of overtones (or partials) in the harmonic series. This approach allowed the composer to produce unique harmonies, colors and atmospheres. For listeners, of course, knowledge of these intervals isn't important, even though the colors, characters and atmospheres they produce is. Each movement is described briefly below: I - Simply and gracefully moving forward. (9th and 3rd partials)This gently flowing movement is a slow progression of widely-spaced chords with gracefully rising and falling strings of notes woven in and around them. The chords often appear in groups of two, with the second being quieter, like an echo of the first. That creates a sense of harmonic space within which the delicate lines move in and out of agreement with the chords.II - With a steady, even flow (or groove). (7th and 5th partials)The harmonic partials of this movement are what give dominant 7th chords their characteristic sound and function. Furthermore, because 7th chords are an important part of jazz harmony, jazz influences enter into this piece. Listeners may notice the outlines of gliding 7th chords, swinging meters and syncopated rhtyhms reminiscent of jazz.III - Gentle, flexible, but rhythmically accurate. (11th Partial)This movement unfolds slowly like a quiet summer afternoon under a shade tree watching lazy clouds. Because the 11th partial is a note that falls between the cracks of the piano keyboard, both the perfect 4th and augmented 4th (in very wide spacing) are used to approximate it. Although this creates some non-traditional harmonies and non-chord tone effects, the piece is tranquil, peaceful and beautiful. IV - With precision, energy and excitement. (13th Partial)This energetic finale uses much syncopation and rhythmic interplay as well as wide-ranging arpeggios that get shared between the two players. The primary interval often appears as widely spaced parallel motion, which adds a special color or flavor to the rhythms. The result is a joyful romp in a playground of rhythm, color, motion and contrast. Invocation The guitar introduces the evocative mood of the work, followed four measures later by the oboe, which with its characteristic sound, embraces the guitar into a conversation and at the same time into an invocation. The second theme, atmospheric, echoing reveals a waiting status. The work is full of fast arpeggios and technical difficulties for both instruments. Gradually increases in dramatic tension and complexity and concludes with the initial idea. The finale is simple, subtractive, allows a feeling of an unfulfilled expectation. Duos for guitar and Oboe are rare and always a challenging task for the composer. That was the primary reason of mine when I started working on this work, to accomplish a match that is unique and wonderful at the same time. Most of my music since that time explores the uniqueness of instruments and their interaction. Invocation was one of the first and its material used later by me in my First Guitar Concerto (Phygein Adynaton). Invocation was premiered at the TSAI Performance Center in Boston, MA and it was a prize winner at the Finalists of the 1994 ALEA Composition Competition

It uses a repetitive eight note broken chord pattern, spread between the hands, based on the primary chord of the key. This develops into arpeggios in the left hand as the right plays the melody in two part harmony. Sonically rich four note chord voicings are utilised to introduce a contrasting theme in the relative minor. Euday L. Bowman's "12th St. Rag" is a fantastic example of a rag that was reshaped into many different forms by different performers. Our version faithfully reflects the structure of the original composition (I have been unable to find any other arrangements of this that preserve the exciting introduction.) It starts by giving the tuba modified arpeggios (to show who's "boss"!), then we're off and running with the familiar meat of the rag. The primary melody is passed back and forth between the trumpets, with the other instruments either playing offbeats or embroidering around the melody with delicious countermelodic snippets. The trombone part contains a number of Dixieland-style glissandos. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba). Performance time is approximately 2:10.
