This arrangement is in the traditional style with lots of patriotism and flair. The lyrics are included for not only the 1st verse, which is always sung, but it includes the 3rd verse which is so very moving! This verse speaks of the heaven rescued land praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must when our cause it is just...our motto: In God is our trust! This arrangement uses lots of octaves in the L.H., and melody uses 3-note chords and a couple 4-note chords. (If this is too much to reach, leave off the lowest note of the chord.) There is an optional spectacular ending on the last page for extra flair! Just add cannons and fireworks! A must have for patriotic repertoire, school, church or patriotic gathering. However, parts are doubled at the octave where necessary for players with more beginning/limited ranges. The lyrics come from the Defence of Fort M'Henry, a poem written by American lawyer Francis Scott Key on September 14, 1814, after he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort after the battle. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a social club in London. Smiths' song, To Anacreon in Heaven, with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. This setting, renamed The Star-Spangled Banner, soon became a popular patriotic song. The Star-Spangled Banner was first recognized for official use by the United States Navy in 1889. Since written for a community choir it is an easier version than S-SB (III) and is more on par with S-SB (I). Having said that, you will still find some interesting chordal voicings that will eventually please.The larger the choir, the better this arrangement sounds. But even if done by a small chorus, you will be pleased. Once again it goes outside of the 'traditional' melodic and harmonic ideas but not by much. Big Chords and great nonfunctional Gospel sounding voice leading produces a striking example of the beauty qualities of this astounding gem. Piece includes multiple distinct and unique themes and developments before concluding. 6 page arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Deeply funky tune draws from inspiration in Hezekiah Walker, Chick Corea, Ricky Dillard, Charlie Parker, and Theolonious Monk. It was used for a piano and drum prelude in church, for a moment in time. It was lots of fun to play.
