This piece is a tribute to the many naval explorers and their crews that sailed in the stormy, 'Storm Bay ' seas.History and Inspiration: Storm Bay Shanty Storm Bay is the opening of the river leading to Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city. It was named by Abel Tasman on the 30th November 1642, when a storm forced his ship out to sea before he could anchor there. He did return there in later days. Throughout its history it has seen indigenous people in their canoes and famous explorers such as Abel Tasman, Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne , Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, William Bligh, Matthew Flinders, James Kelly and James Cook sail its waves. In colonial times whalers could also be seen trying to make their fortune. In more recent times local sailors, including those in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race try and win over one of nature’s more challenging waterways. This piece is a tribute to them, and the songs that would have been sung by sailors in the bygone era.

Program note: As indicated by the title, this is my twelfth string quartet. My very first work, Aperture (1974), was a string quartet. In between I wrote four (nos. 2 – 5) for the Kronos Quartet, one (no. 6) for the Manhattan String Quartet, one (no. 7) for the Lydian String Quartet, one (no. 8) for the Artaria String Quartet, two (nos. 9 - 10) for the Hawthorne String Quartet, and one (no. 11) for the Formosa Quartet. The number twelve immediately brought to mind the months of the year. But I thought a twelve-movement string quartet might be a bit excessive, and difficult to achieve in a coherent narrative arc. Most classical string quartets by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are in four movements. So why not the seasons, a movement for each: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. I am a huge fan of The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn. Confession: I am a huge fan of anything by maestro Haydn. For inspiration and guidance, I went to Haydn’s other oratorio The Seasons. Armed with a Dover publication of the full score and a recording of the complete work by Sir Thomas Beecham on EMI Classics, I got down to work over the summer of 2010. String Quartet No. 12 … The Seasons, after Franz Joseph Haydn is in four movements, played without pause between movements. 1) Intro: Heavy snow … Spring: Crocuses blooming!!! 2) Summer: Cloudburst! Double rainbow … Trio 3) Autumn: La Caccia … Danza Rusticana … Trio 4) Intro: Heavy snow again … Winter: O Magnum Mysterium … Hail storm! The work begins with four descending chords, depicting the falling of snow. But it’s Spring and crocuses are seen peeping through the snow … Summer begins with cloudbursts, thunder, lightning and torrential rain. A double rainbow appears after the storm. The sun emerges from the clouds in the Trio section. It is a lovely day after all; but then the clouds return … La Caccia: men go hunting in the Autumn. Well, the men in Haydn’s days at least. Peasant ladies dance as they harvest in the fields. A hawk appears, soaring overhead in the Trio as the sun sets in an orange-red sky ... In Winter snow falls again; but it’s the season to celebrate the Nativity. Violin and viola chant O magnum mysterium … O Magnum Mysterium O great mystery Et admirabile sacramentum and wonderful sacrament Ut animalia viderent Dominum natum that animals should see the new-born Lord Jacentem in praesepio! lying in a manger! This piece gives opportunity of different level players to try ensemble playing FAST! And as in tornado, there is the eye of the storm, so in this piece there is also a calm section in the middle. We should always let students try new things and encourage them to try their limits, reach for the stars so to say. Chamber music is important, and it should be from early stages already. I tried to compose this piece so that everyone has something: moving notes, melodic lines etc. Sometimes students feel put down if they only accompany, even if it is of course important skill to learn. This piece is designed so that everyone feels they are involved actively. There is also some rhythmical elements that help to keep it in control. Lets encourage the 4th cello too! Here is a detailed description of the work by composer, David F. Wilborn.Elysian Fields was written for the Elysian Trombone Consort. Members of the ensemble include: Timothy Anderson, Chad Arnow, Nathan Siler, and Brett Shuster. The work was created as part of a recital feature that took place at the 2021 International Trombone Festival entitled A New Initiative II: Trombone Quartet Music by Composers of Color. The Elysian Trombone Consort created the New Initiative concert series as a vehicle to promote new and existing works by composers from under-represented gender, ethnic and social communities. The concert series aims to highlight the creative scholarship of under-represented artists. The ultimate goal is to encourage the programming and creation of more compositions by these scholars.The title Elysian Fields (also known as Elysium) is a venue in mythology that references a final resting place in the afterlife for the Greek Gods. Although Elysium was originally designated for Greek Gods and mortals who may have been related to the Gods, the venue was also accessible to certain mortals by the Gods for their heroic deeds or by those who enjoyed favor with the Gods. Images of Elysium are said to have radiant sunshine, rolling hills and, according to Homer in his Odyssey, the most pleasant weather conditions – no snow, nor heavy storm, nor ever rain.The music Elysian Fields attempts to capture the frivolity of living in Elysium. It portrays the radiant sunshine and the spirit of joy. The place is by all accounts a surreal landscape where sun rays softly beam down on the fields and, in some cases, it emanates as a heavenly backdrop. It is a place of everlasting happiness, serenity, and peace. This 5-minute work is accessible by intermediate to moderately advanced performers.The track below is from a live performance by the Elysian Trombone Consort at the International Trombone Festival in 2021.

This series was born out of a desire to have beginning players participate in worship and play along side more experienced players. These arrangements are written with a melody part in each instrument's clef. The melody part is the same from instrument to instrument with slight variations in register. Along with the melody part is a harmony part or ensemble part. Unlike the melody parts, each ensemble part is unique to that instrument. The piano accompaniment is the glue that holds it all together. This arrangement to be played as a solo with accompaniment, or any combination duet, trio, quartet or quintet with piano accompaniment. By having one or more instruments play the melody part, and then add any other instrument on their ensemble part. The melody part is overall the easiest or simplest part. The ensemble parts can be a little more techincal. These techniques would include harder string crossings, and some position work. This scoring flexiblity allows less-experienced players of any stringed instrument to play the melody part, and the more-experienced string players to play their instrument's ensemble part. This allows all levels of string players to play together any combination. On Jordan's Stormy Banks, the American hymn tune, PROMISED LAND, dates back to the early 1800's. It is originally found in a hymnal that was used in the singing schools that were prevalent throughout the southern United States. This arrangement has a fiddle-tune like flavor and uses some open string double stops in an opening motif, hinting at its roots in the folk song tradition. The melody part is can be played in first position entirely. Your players are sure to have fun with the double-stops, finger slides, sounded glissandos and rhythmic patterns that are sure to have you tapping your toe.
