It opens with part 3, playing the theme, then one-by-one the others join in along with a drone effect making it sound a little like distant bagpipes. Theoverall dynamic increases to a climax when the higher parts take the main theme and then it dramatically returns to a single solo line which then fades. The soloist and glockenspiel echo gently as the music fades away to nothing, with snare rolls whispering.I imagined an Ancient Celtic woman singing a lullaby to her baby son as his father and other men go off to fight in their ships. The music contains her sadness and some descriptive touches of the harsh environment in which she lives. Mycousin, Ed Searl, was studying voice with Novie Greene at the time, and it was through him that I made her acquaintance. The three of us thought that it would be nice to have something which we could all perform together, and so Novie began working on these charming settings. We premiered these pieces at a Bach's Lunch Concert at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Orlando on 28 April 1983. I have performed them since then as a set and also done St. Patrick's Breastplate several times for church services. The hymn is frequently used during confirmation or baptis1n ceremonies. The text is a translation of a Gaelic prayer done in 1889 by Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895), the wife of the Anglican Bishop of Derry and Raphoe. She also wrote the text for the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful. The tune chosen by Novie Greene, sometimes known as St. Patrick, is by the Irish composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924), who wrote it in 1902. Stanford is best remembered today for his work as a professor of composition at the Royal College of Music. His students there included Frank Bridge, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Thomas Dunhill, Gustav Holst, Herbert Howells, Willian1 Yeates Hurlstone, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. ~Bruce Gbur.

When writing this piece, I hoped to capture the full spectrum of realized helplessness. We start with an almost methodical melancholy, repeated with additional tones. Next, the diminished chords and misaligned text paint a picture of a disenfranchised group, together longing for the same relief. In a frenzied turnaround, the music climbs to a diatonic apex, immediately drifting back to the familiar tonality of the top of the piece, and closing with a dark, mistrusting 'Amen'. Take time with the fermatas and ritards, and really lean into the dynamics of this short, dramatic composition. - Zach WellsZach Wells lives in Dallas, Texas, where he is an Associate Director of Music at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church. There, he directs the youth choir and youth band, and leads a new, Sunday night alternative worship service.

The Missa Sanctae Mariae Virginis – literally Mass of Saint Mary the Virgin – was composed for the Episcopal church of Saint Mary the Virgin, New York City, where the composer was Music Director & Organist from 2008 to 2013. The Kyrie was composed in 2016. The title makes reference to the name of the church, but also makes reference to the principal source of inspiration: two ancient plainsong melodies that accompany Marian texts (Salve regina and Ave maris stella). The Mass is composed in a vain that is influenced by the great parody Masses of Renaissance masters Palestrina, Lassus, and others. Nods are also made to the twentieth century, and particularly to the music of Herbert Howells and the Anglican tradition, and also to Jean Langlais, Olivier Messiaen, and similar French musical trends. It features a wide range of moods, from scintillating and exotic harmonies to thrilling rhythmic passages. The work is composed for 8-part choir with solo sections for additional voices from within the choir. The Mass can be performed complete as part of a church service. Likewise, any of the movements will work as independent compositions which makes them suitable for concert performance.
