The inspiration of this music came from fresh greenery in early summer. The title of Pastoral Fantasy is based on the image of pastoral scenery and it consists the theme of the music. The following is the construction of the music.1. Initial pastoral andante2. Introduction of fugue, develop freely3. Recreation of touching pastoral theme4. Powerful codaPlease do not stick with interpretation of the music, just feel the sounds, as you like. It would be great pleasure for the composer if this music means something to those who play or listen to it.It’s been elaborated on details of playing technique and in order to be performed more easily, it’s been totally rewrote from the original(066). Even 6 parts of mandolin ensemble is able to make more effective sounds with this score than the original. Parts of wind instruments and percussion can be omitted. It was first performed by Keio University at 100th anniversary in2010.

In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov wrote Capriccio Espagnol in 1887 as a showpiece for orchestra that featured several Spanish folk melodies. Its second movement, Variazioni, is a set of variations. What is so fascinating about this theme and variations is that neither the melody nor harmony drastically change; it is the orchestration that carries this movement. Honoring that, this arrangement for brass quintet gives each player a chance to play the theme. First, trumpet one, then trombone, then tuba, then 2nd trumpet, and finally trumpet one again.
