It therefore seemed natural that this song written by Greg Nelson and Phil McHugh which pictures hungry, hurting people who are unaware of the Christian message, would resonate with him. However, Green had a life-changing experience when he realized he'd been living a fake and phoney life, where he'd been doing the right things but with the wrong motives. He'd therefore understood his desperate need for a Saviour and ran to Jesus for what He alone can provide. As a consequence, when this song was pitched to him, Green had just come through a pretty significant life turn-around. The singer recalled to CCM Magazine presents 100 Greatest Songs In Christian Music: It resonated for two reasons - first, because my parents had given their lives to evangelize, and their love for the people they were serving around the world was motivated by Christ's love for them; so that was definitely one of the reasons why I gravitated to the song. The other reason was that for the for the first time, I suppose, I was realizing that it isn't just those who never heard about the Lord who needed him. I knew that I was surrounded by people just like me who were living kind of an external, performance-based Christianity, but they had no light. The Power of the One is a 67 measure, 4-5 octave medley of Christian hymns whose unifying theme is the Power of the (One) God. This medley is comprised of I Sing the Mighty Power of God, Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above, Eternal Father, Strong to Save (The Navy Hymn) and He Is Able to Deliver Thee. The first two of these hymns are upbeat, and include some melody doubling into the highest octave. Those two and the last hymn make use of occasional descant lines. He Is Able to Deliver Thee is very lively, and utilizes both an occasional descant line, and (fairly fast) bass runs. In between Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above and He Is Able to Deliver Thee, you have the slower, and much more reverential Eternal Father, Strong to Save (also known as The Navy Hymn), which uses handchimes, although bells can be substituted for the chimes. This selection helps add a contrast in style, tempo and volume to the other three. At the end, there is a tag consisting of the last part of Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above at a slower tempo, and at a triple forte dynamic level, for a grandioso ending. The fast bass runs contribute to my thinking that this arrangement is probably a 3+ difficulty level.

Worship in the OT is a rather noisy affair with instruments, singing, shouting, dancing, and public praise. In the Old Testament, quiet in the Temple of God is an ominous, frightening thing, because God’s judgment is to be pronounced! I Surrender All is paired here with The LORD is in His Holy Temple thinking back to Isaiah 6 where Isaiah’s reaction to encountering the presence of God is surrender to Him. Yielding to God is, not only the prerequisite for avoiding God’s judgment, it is the path to peace and joy.     Without the doublestops of the violin part, the wind parts may not seem very challenging at first sight, but to play a beautiful legato with a full tone at piano and pianissimo (slowly, too) is much harder than it sounds. The phrasing and the intensity of the music is critical to the message of the piece. Originally recorded by the Gaylords in 1954 and Petula Clark in the ‘60’s, the song tells the story of a cobbler (“little shoemakerâ€) thinking of his heart-throb while he works at making shoes for her dance in: tap-tap-tap-tap-tap. This pop tune from days gone by is suitable for pops concerts, outdoor events and other special occasions. Dynamics should be observed carefully, especially when the Bass has the lead. Staccato passages need not be too short; they should imitate the shoemaker’s tap-tap-tap. First trombone goes to high Ab; Bass needs a good low C (below the staff).

I was missing my family very much during this special season and I realized that this Christmas season was an important time to tell them how much I love them and miss them. I also felt it is an important time to thank the good Lord for all loved ones he put into my life and for all the ways He continually shows His love for us through others, e.g. kindness, good acts, etc. This sat on a shelf for many years until one of our music directors here in Mesa, AZ (a former New York State President of the ACDA) saw it and encouraged me to try to get it published. The song was performed during Christmas 2017 by the Children's Choir at Risen Savior Catholic Church in Burnsville, MN. It was also performed here in Mesa, AZ by a 20 person Soprano and Alto Choir. I received very good feedback from both performances. Although I was thinking of the song as a Children's Choir piece, I think it lends itself well in both situations above. The Children's Choir director at St. George Catholic Church in Apache Junction, AZ asked for a copy and permission to make copies for possible use during a future Christmas; I gave them permission to do that.

It can be understood as a lover trying to encourage the loved one to believe not only in oneself but also to trust in the love the lover has offered.
