Published by Jerry Lanning (A0.767723). The first trumpet in my brass quintet asked for a short feature, and this is it. It’s one of the most difficult tunes to arrange because it’s traditionally harmonised by only two chords (the tonic and the major triad on the flattened leading note). Somehow if you start to reharmonise it, it loses its essential character. So I’ve constructed a largely unrelated intro and coda and an episode in the middle to give variety. The first trumpet part is showy but not too difficult for a competent player, although a big breath is needed at the end. Horn in Eb, Trombone in Bb, Bass in Eb and Bass in Bb parts are provided as alternatives for brass band players.

Released as a single on 7 September 1968, it was their second number-one single on the UK Singles Chart and their first US Top 10 hit.The song is about a man who, awaiting his execution in the electric chair, begs the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife. Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, said that the man's crime was the murder of his wife's lover, though the lyrics do not explicitly allude to the identity of the victim. Robin said, This is about a prisoner on Death Row who only has a few hours to live. He wants the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife. There's a certain urgency about it. Myself and Barry wrote it. It's a bit like writing a script. Sometimes you can sit there for three hours with your guitar and nothing will happen. Then in the last ten minutes something will spark. The song was written with Percy Sledge in mind to record it. Sledge did record it in February 1970 but Atlantic did not issue his version in the United States at the time.Barry recalled, In those days, the lyrics were almost pretty well done on the spot. I don't remember the fundamentals on how the lyrics were formed, except that we were writing about a guy on death row. That was it.Robin adds:It was like acting, you see, we said, let's pretend that somebody, his life is on the line, somebody's going to the chair. What would be going through their mind? Let's not make it doom and gloom but sort of an appeal to the person he loves. Because right now that's all he cares about. Regardless of whether he's done a bad thing, he is a human being, and he's sending out this last message. There's someone out there whom he loves. It's a torch song, but within a very sort of theatrical sense. Not sort of abstract, but definitely somebody in a very bad situation whose life is going to end. What would they be saying, you know? In all of my years as a flutist, conductor, and now writer, I never heard of Paull before, but I was curious enough to look for any sound files of his music, and came across both live piano performances and piano roll performances of the Ben HurChariot Race March on YouTube.Edward Taylor Paul, known in some circles as The Other March King was born on February 16th, 1858. In Gerrardstown, Virginia, now West Virginia. While not too much is known about his early years, we do know that his adult years were spent as itinerant musician, instrument sales person, selling pianos and organs, composer, as well as publisher.The Civil War era had Patrick Sarsfield Gillmore as the most famous bandleader and composer. As children of this era, John Philip Sousa and Edward Taylor Paull, were destined to follow in Gillmore's footsteps. While Sousa became successful through his work as both conductor and composer, even attaining the moniker of March King, the road to success and fame was more difficult for Paull. We do know, that by 1878, he was the manager of a music store that sold pianos and organs, eventually going bankrupt, and having to be bailed out by his own father. By 1894, he was the manager of the Richmond Music Publishing Company, and this was the same year that he was issued his first copyright on the Ben Hur Chariot Race March This was originally written for piano, particularly, the parlour piano. This was to become one of many marches and parlour piano compositions by 'E.T, Paull. He may not have been the most skilled musician of his era, but he was wise enough to realize how popular marches became in 1880's and '90's.Paull's compositions were also associated with beautiful color covers. He was fortunate to live in Richmond, Virginia, and the lithography company of A. Hoen & Company, provided him the highest quality and richly-colored art work for his compositions. This company was unique, in that they used a five- color process, which added depth to the color. Thepopularity of marches, plus the great covers, both contributed to the 60,000 copies that the Ben Hur Chariot Race March sold in its first printing. Not bad, for a first composition.Paull found inspiration for his march from the novel Ben Hur, written and published by General Lew Wallace in 1880. Paull dedicated his composition to Wallace, who sold many copies of his book. Eventually, there was a stage play and three film renditions; one in 1907, 1925, and 1959. Some time in the 1920's, the Sousa Band recorded the Ben Hur Chariot Race March, and of course, the MGM, 1925 film version, helped in a renewed popularity of Paull's composition.Edward Taylor Paull died in 1924, and his wife retained the copyright, until it went into public domain. What remains today are a few music examples in the Library of Congress collection, as well as some 78's and piano rolls. While I did my research on this piece, I tried to find any applicable Sousa manuscripts of a possible arrangement, but I could not findany. I usually write for woodwinds, but in this case, I thought that a brass quintet would sound far better. I also chose a moderate tempo, so as not to lose some of the nuances of the original composition.

Sweetwater Brass Press #707372. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1104138).      Howard W. Petrie was a composer of popular music active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of his most popular songs was “I Don’t Want to Play in Your Yard,†published early in his career, 1894. The song underwent a revival in the mid-1950s when Peggy Lee recorded it. It also figured prominently in the popular 1981 film Reds. Lyrics are credited to Philip Wingate, and his first verse sets up the story. Two little girls were next-door neighbors and best of friends. One day, however, a quarrel arose and “hot tears were shared.†One announced, “You can’t play in our yard.†The reply of the other forms the familiar chorus: I don't want to play in your yard, I don't like you any more, You'll be sorry when you see me sliding down our cellar door, You can't holler down our rain-barrel, you can't climb our apple tree, I don't want to play in your yard, if you won't be good to me.      The second verse tells of the reconciliation. The two girls miss each other. They kiss and make up and remain friends “all thro’ life.†But “in sweet dreams of childhood†we still remember the controversy of the yard.      This version features the group's Trumpets somewhat taking the roles of the two little girls. It retains the F major key in which it was written, changes tempo four times (in addition to a few rallentando/a tempo instructions) and includes two short, rather simple cadenzas, one for each Trumpet. It starts (rather incongruously!) with the eight 4/4 measures of “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary†then transitions to ¾ for the remainder of the piece.      Trumpets predominate with melody and lead. However Horn and Trombone do occasionally come to the fore to provide introductions, call-and-response figures and recapitulations. Both Trumpets play a few notes above their staff—G# and A—but for the most part, all instruments perform within their normal playing range. Performance time is about three and a half minutes to perform.      Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 34 seconds. You want your concerts to be well visited and to help you with that, I make arrangements (and compositions) for trombonequartet with guitar, piano, bass and drums. They also contain an optional bass-trombone/ tuba part and sometimes a solo part. This one contains a trombone solo part. This arrangement of A Whole New World, is scored for Solo Trombone in front of the ensemble mentioned above. There are two solo parts in the set. One high and and one low. You can combine those two if that makes you more comfortable. Durata: 3,5 minutes (approx.) The song itself is about Alladin taking Jasmine on a ride on the magic carpet. The lyrics are all about discovering what you didn’t know about and be grateful for all the adventures life gives. This makes it a perfect piece to play in a variety of places, like weddings, celebrations of any kind, graduations, not to mention many types of concerts. With a few adjustments you can also use parts of this arrangement and make it work. It’s most powerful when you use the whole band, but it still makes a lot of sense if you have to skip some of the parts. There are so many times I have had to skip a piece in a concert, using a not as good substitute, because we didn’t have the people to play it.
