The three piano pieces were composed with a musical aesthetics close to minimalism, each has ideas and fragments that are repeated and others that do not, with which they develop. The thematic ideas came out of improvisations that were then taking form to be written. In each piece the twelve notes of the chromatic scale appear in a free way and without an order in particular.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q582538). The initial stimulus for this set of pieces was a painting by Kandinsky, Composition VII (1913). The painting represents a period when he was concerned with emotional, abstract paintings of two sorts: (a) improvisations (â??unconscious, spontaneous expression of inner character, the non-material natureâ?? that contain no recognizable objects, but coloured shapes that express feelings) and (b) compositions (â??an expression of a slowly formed inner feeling, tested and worked over repeatedlyâ?? that include recognizable objects, but ones that have been â??strippedâ?? and â??veiledâ??). Taking the latter idea as a starting point I began to mould and form a tripartite piece which conveyed the energy and colour from canvas to notes. The movement titles are derived from the number of notes in the note rows for each movement, i.e. Etude Four uses a note row made up of four notes. © Daniel Kidane, 2023.

It was sung at social gatherings where improvisation and group participation was encouraged and expected. My great Aunt taught me this the way that you find it here--she had no idea that it was actually composed by anybody since she'd learned it from her mother and assumed her mother made it up. While teaching an American Folk Music Class I came across a tune called The Three Chafers whose text and music was similar, but hardly recognizable. Howard #6496061. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998889). This is a set of three solo bassoon works. The first piece, Pierrot, develops the notion of 'line'. It explores various facets of the instrument (as in the more complex nature of Pierrot's Commedia Dell'Arte character). The piece features a serial 'note-row' procedure but in a relaxed manner, more akin to Berg than either Schoenberg or Webern. The second piece, Folk Lament, alludes to a folk idiom by using modality (characterised by the flattened seventh degree of the scale) within a sonata form structure. The two main themes give a broad feel of being improvised and, particularly in the case of the second subject, includes composed-out forms of folk-like ornamentation. The final piece, The Clown, employs bluesy inflections, an irregular time signature (5/4) and a clear rondo structure. Varied repetitions of the main, jaunty theme, alternate with contrasting episodes in related keys, one of which is even a derivation of the 12-bar Blues. The set is highly accessible and suitable for more advanced bassoonists including students and professionals. Improvisation (1987) trumpet solo was conceived during Nash’s Master of Music Degree in Composition studies at Western Michigan University from 1986-89 and is one of four of his musical works written during that time that is still receiving performances today. Improvisation is in three movements. Movement 1, marked Allegro-Rubato, beginning at q = 120 is unmeasured and unmetered and begins with the trumpet playing 16th note passages in a high tessitura. This is interspersed with slower passages with quarter and eighth notes, building up to the fast note passages like the opening melody. Movement 2 is slow, q = 50 and Movement 3 is marked Allegro Con Fuoco, q = 144-160, mostly in 4/4 time but interspersed with a few 3/4 and 2/4 measures.
