The Raymond Variations for Piano (Set 1), received its world premiere on 2nd December 2015 at the 1901 Arts Club London, performed by Lorraine Womack-Banning as part of a memorial tribute concert to her late husband Raymond Banning (former professor of pianoforte at Trinity College London). The Variations are based on the three Andantino themes which form a central part of the ‘Raymond Overture’ written in 1851 by French composer Ambroise Thomas: 1811-1896. There are nine piano variations in total; these include a mix of both full and short partial variations (including a very short declamatory two chord introductory variation). The variations are not numbered or set-apart in a conventional manner, rather they form part of a continuous whole, and are separated only by bridge passages and/or cadence points; they last a little under eight minutes in duration, and strongly exploit the passionate elements of Thomas’s themes. They have been written for the most part in an accessible tonal style (with a passing nod to Messrs. Beethoven and J.S. Bach) and are based predominately in the home key of D minor, but they do also take advantage of many 20th and 21st century harmonic techniques where deemed appropriate: e.g. added note chords; cluster chords; percussive chords, and melodic deflection. In particular, the interval of the major 7th and its enharmonic equivalent(s) (the most distinctive interval in the main andantino theme from the overture) is heard in various different guises throughout the variations: this includes its inversion the minor 2nd which has a very distinctive sharp dissonant quality. Much play is made of these intervals – to somewhat humorous effect in variation 8 (the joker in the pack) heard some three quarters into the set, here the dissonant interval is pounded out double forte before hastily leading into some boisterous cluster harmonic instability; then quietly begins variation 9 which duly brings the set to a close. One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in 1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director ofmusic of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London. While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series in London. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octave mechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and began touring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the «turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, through China and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It was during this period that he converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). He subsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyages were subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection known as The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution. Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. On March 27 1865, he performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.Souvenirs d’Ecosse begins with a classical aria which leads to theme and three variations on the Scottish song « Charley is my Darling », a ballade by Charles Gray (1782-1851). The work ends with a brillant and decidedly non-Scottish bolero, which was probably a piece that Soualle wrote while he was in Scotland.

Like his younger compatriot Leopold Koželuh, Johann Baptist Wanhal derived a considerable part of his income from teaching, and his large output of keyboard music – which includes solos, chamber works with keyboard and instructional pieces – reflects this. Along with the usual sets of variations, dances and other small-scale works, he published sonatinas and progressive sonatas for young performers which reveal his experience as teacher and his gift of making the simplest music attractive as well as instructive. Wanhal’s output of solo keyboard music also includes far more complex and ambitious works, among them, several sets of pieces styled “Capriccio”. These works are in essence multi-movement sonatas, their capriciousness largely evident in their discursive first movements which include an element of modest tonal adventure. The works are very attractive, technically demanding yet well within the scope of the many fine amateur fortepianists in Vienna. Wanhal’s capriccios were eagerly sought after in other centres as well and were issued by publishers in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Offenbach am Main as well as in Vienna.

John Bull was an English composer, organist, virginalist, and organ builder who lived from 1562/63 to 1628. He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a doctor of music at the universities of both Oxford and Cambridge. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces, published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Bull wrote an anthem, God the Father, God the Son, for the wedding in 1613 of the Princess and the Elector Palatine, in addition to his keyboard compositions, verse anthems, canons, and other works. PREFACE AND BRIEF ANALYTICAL NOTESThe three sonatinas op.71 by Mauro Giuliani in C, G, and D were first published in 1816 in Vienna and were intended as student pieces of progressive difficulty. In parallel with this intention they are also fully developed three-movement works which reveal Giulianiâ??s technique as a composer with harmony, counterpoint, and structure.They certainly have the time length and the variety of full scale sonatas, but here Giuliani has chosen to use the supporting structures of sonatas met in movements other than the first, such as Menuetto and Trio, Rondo, Marcia and Trio, Scherzo and Trio, etc,  rather than sonata form itself.As it stands, this first sonatina in C has the following three movements:1 Maestoso (Moderato) which is a set of a theme and three variations, or better termed as a set of mathematical divisions reminiscent of an earlier era, as the accompaniment of the theme is given in crotchets, quavers, quaver triplets, and semi-quavers.2 Menuetto-Trio-Menuetto da capo written typically in the subdominant key of F and fully developed as per classical 19th century usage.3 Rondo. This movement is also written in a classical rondo style and form as an A-B-A-C-B-A-codetta  structure, with a typical tonal scheme of A in the tonic Key (C), B in the dominant key (G), and C in the relative minor key (Am).Therefore in this work we do not meet with structural innovations of any kind, but with strong affirmation of already existing and well established early 19th century structural norms, but the beautiful personal melodic and harmonic style of Giuliani and even his routine guitaristic nuances and formulas are present in all three movements and can be enjoyed as always.TECHNICALThis publication keeps each separate movement within the limit of two pages, thus avoiding page turns. It is published with two versions of the same pieces given in undecorated and decorated pages for the user to select which version he prefers to print out. Around the year 1726, John Walsh, a London music publisher, created a wonderful forgery in order to run around the copyright laws of the day: he pretended to pirate an edition supposedly published by the House of Roger in Amsterdam. This forgery included 12 Sonatas for solo instrument and continuo which had been composed by one George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Around 1793 the House of Arnold published the same set, omitting two of the original 12 and replacing them with two others by Handel. So at this point there were a total of 14 solo sonatas available to the public.In the year 1879 Friedrich Chrysander issued these 14 works and several others in volume 27 of the German Handel Society’s Gesamtausgabe of Handel’s works. Since then they have been edited from this scholarly work many times, and afflicted by all sorts of permutations which reflect the various styles of performance in vogue over the years. One finds editions stripped of ornamentation but loaded with articulation and dynamic markings at one end of the spectrum, and editions with modest stenographic and florid ornamentation at the other. The Sonata in C Minor (London: 1712) is a pure example of the middle phase of the solo sonata da chiesa [church sonata]. The first three movements are indicative of the style found in sonatas derived from the disruptive canzona of the early 17th century. An initial slow movement with walking bass is followed by an imitative movement (in this case, a fugue with a chromatic subject), which in turn leads to an Adagio. This latter movement in the relative major is a ricercare containing several imitative entrances. The finale is a spirited binary-form Bourrée angloise, an item taken over from the French ordre or dance suite. The extraordinarily short length of this movement seems to indicate that a trio is missing here; therefore, I have added the bourrée from the Royal Fireworks Music of 1749 to act as a trio, but players are certainly free to omit it.
