This is a set of three piano miniatures, which, as part of the compositional process, originally derived melodic material by setting lines from Shakespeare's Sonnets to music. In the first piece, within ternary form, the opening section explores sequences of 'chord building'. This is followed by a middle section based on arpeggio figures, before returning to the initial ideas in inversion. In the second piece, also in ternary form, the initial section builds harmonies from a simple two-note rocking idea. Then follows a middle part based on a sequence of semiquaver arpeggio figures, before returning to a variation of the opening section, developing into a 6/8 coda. The third piece is essentially a set of textural variations on a folk-like theme, the tune appearing a fourth higher each time. This final piece employs simple variation techniques that are in-keeping with the folk genre, such as drones, modality, and parallel harmonies. Towards the end, a descending sequence leads to a final variation on the theme in the opening key, in rhythmic augmentation. The cycle is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

I loved you first: but afterwards your love is one of Rossetti’s love poems; it simply yet profoundly expresses the existence of love as being made possible only through the complete melding of two people as one entity.The Love Which Makes Us One is best suited for advanced intermediate to professional level choirs. Competitive high school and college choirs should be able to manage it. The piece involves continuous two-against-three rhythms with the choir vs. piano. In addition, there is one extended a capella section that requires the choir to stay on pitch for the piano re-entry. This is the second in a set of three piano miniatures, which, as part of the compositional process, originally derived melodic material by setting lines from Shakespeare's Sonnets to music. In this ternary form piece, the initial section builds harmonies from a simple two-note rocking idea. Then follows a middle part based on a sequence of semiquaver arpeggio figures, before returning to a variation of the opening section, developing into a 6/8 coda. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. The work employs simple variation techniques that are in-keeping with the folk genre, such as drones, modality, and parallel harmonies. Towards the end, a descending sequence leads to a final variation on the theme in the opening key, in rhythmic augmentation. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Italian.Like many Englishmen I had sung madrigals for pleasure – usually late at night with friends, after several glasses of wine. While these madrigals have their charm, and many are extremely beautiful, I found, as I began an extended exploration of the madrigal as a creative venture, that the richest source lies in the Italian Renaissance. In 1998 I embarked on a project to write a series of madrigals, eventually deciding to collect them in ‘books’ in the manner of Italian madrigalists, such as Monteverdi or Gesualdo. The Second Book is for an unusual six-part group – the Scandinavian Trio Mediaeval (3 sopranos) and three tenors (John Potter plus two from the Hilliard Ensemble) – and sets Petrarch in the original 14th century Italian. I focused on those sonnets known as the Rima Sparsi (scattered verses) and added one extra Petrarch setting – originally a radiophonic piece (Marconi's Madrigal) for CBC's Marconi Day. Gavin Bryars.
