But guitarists will probably prefer to think of it as F# major, which is a familiar chord in guitar repertoire, and there’s no need for a barré for this one either!This music is set in the key of the original TV soundtrack. This one-handed instrument was familiar to composers such as JS Bach, Handel, Telemann, Purcell, Vivaldi etc., but was largely neglected after the invention of valves in the early 19th century - and the subsequent invention of the nodal vent-hole systems in the late 20th-century - until recently, when the elusive lost art of clarino playing (in the fourth octave and above) was cracked by dedicated optimists such as Don L Smithers and JF Madeuf. These arrangements are a stylistic departure from the trumpet's golden age of Baroque repertoire, featuring works well known in the 20th century, and provide excellent training for rhythmic precision, style, pitching and team playing. They're also fun, if you like that sort of thing. Advice on tuning up the differently-pitched instruments and a technical tip are included. The current regulations on SMP mean us little guys can only publish in-copyright works one at a time. So, you can collect them all and make yourself a tome! This arrangement of Happy Birthday was written in 2011 for Edward H Tarr's 75th birthday concert in Basel (CH). Ed conducted many pieces from the Charamela Real, mostly for trumpets in two different tonalities. Happy Birthday was slipped in the programme before the second encore without his knowledge. At his downbeat, he got quite a surprise. The rest of these arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change! Enjoy! DM

After a maestoso rendition of the first verse by the brass section, the drums set up the tempo into a tour de force medium fast tempo tune influenced by Duke Jordan's Jordu (recorded by the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet) & Bobby Timmons's Moanin' (recorded by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) that while retaining much of the original tune (verse, refrain & bridge) brings out a distinctive hard bop-influenced twist coupled with solos by tenor sax & drums as well as a powerful soli by the trumpet section and a shout chorus moment by the full band. This chart is perfect as a concert opener, anchorer or closer, and it's another good twist of the saying something old, something new in a refreshing way. This Epiphany song has similar themes to We Three Kings but is definitely a refreshing change from that well known tune. This fun arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for Baritone soloist, SATB choir, a woodwind instrument, and bass instrument. Included is sheet music for C, Bb, and Eb instruments and a bass line which can be played by many different bass instruments depending on what the group has available. The instrumentalists can transpose their parts to different octaves for ease of playing if necessary. It is the Third Prize Winner of the 2020 American Prize in Composition - Concert Band. Grade 5, duration 27 minutes. The piece depicts four different places in the Basque country that the composer feels best show the changes of season. The first movement is Winter in the Costa Norte (Galerna). Galerna is on the northerncoast and is subject to harsh storms in the winter. As the piece starts off with a light-hearted dance in thepiccolo, a storm is approaching from afar. At first the storm seems to be in the distance but as it comes closer it overtakes the festivities in a bluster. For a short time two conductors are needed as the concertband is split into two groups – one showing the light-hearted dance led by the piccolo, the other thecacophony of the storm led by the percussion. The storm overtakes everything as it ends the movement with a flourish.The second movement Spring in Rioja Alavesa is a calming contrast to the first movement like the freshness of a spring day. The sun rises and shines beams of light onto the acres of grape vines. After a timea short rain comes to refresh and clean the plants.The third movement Autumn at the Guggenheim Museum is in a traditional 3rd movement form of a symphony, minuet and trio, but the harmonies sometimes use bitonality, having the melody in one key while the accompaniment is in another to suggest surrealism. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbaois one of the world’s most famous museums, not only for the surreal art inside, but also because of the architecture of the building itself.The fourth movement Summer in Bilbao is based on a dance melody composed in the Ezpata- dantza Basque style. It employs a rhythmic element with alternating 6/8 and 3â„4 meters where the eighth notes are basically equal, but in the dance the 3â„4 meter is actually a little bit longer. This type of subtlemanipulation of rhythm is used similarly in the Viennese Waltz, when the 3rd beat would be stretched outto accommodate the dancers. The Ezpata-dantza dance continues until the Altza Gastiak, the officialsong of the Bilbao Athletic Club, the local soccer team of Bilbao, is heard. After this the Ezpata-dantzamelody is transformed from a happy dance to a triumphant melody and rousing finale.In The Four Seasons in the Basque Country all of the themes are original except for the short excerpt ofAltza Gastiakin the 4th movement. Some themes are composed in the style of Basque folk dances.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over one hundred compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe that have been performed extensively throughout the world. Many of his compositions are available on ITunes, Youtube and Soundcloud.He has been a frequent traveler to Spain since 1993 and has promoted compositions by Spanishcomposers around the world. He is the only composer who has been commissioned six times by Spanishbands for Certamen competitions, with each band winning first prize.His compositions are recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Recordsand others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. This one-handed instrument was familiar to composers such as JS Bach, Handel, Telemann, Purcell, Vivaldi etc., but was largely neglected after the invention of valves in the early 19th century - and the subsequent invention of the nodal vent-hole systems in the late 20th-century - until recently, when the elusive lost art of clarino playing (in the fourth octave and above) was cracked by dedicated optimists such as Don L Smithers and JF Madeuf. These arrangements are a stylistic departure from the trumpet's golden age of Baroque repertoire, featuring works well known in the 20th century, and provide excellent training for rhythmic precision, style, pitching and team playing. They're also fun, if you like that sort of thing. Advice on tuning up the differently-pitched instruments and a technical tip are included. The current regulations on SMP mean us little guys can only publish in-copyright works one at a time. So, you can collect them all and make yourself a tome! These arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change!

The three movement work (7'20 long total duration) was inspired by the mighty oak tree (Derwen in Welsh) and journeys on an exploration through roots, branches and leaves.Derwen is aimed at confident intermediate to advanced ensembles due to (sometimes) frequently changing time signatures and some more technically challenging phrases but also brings with it beautiful harmonies and changing moods.A note from the composer: The title of this piece, Derwen, is the Welsh word for an oak tree. Trees are traditional symbols of physical and spiritual nourishment or growth, with the oak in particular representing strength and longevity. This seemed to be a fitting inspiration for a commission born out of a long-standing musical collaboration and friendship, and so became the starting point for the composition. The piece begins with a simple melody in the lower voices (the ‘roots’) and gradually builds up the texture. The second movement explores the idea of intertwining branches, reaching higher and higher towards the sky. There are a number of themes and key changes throughout the piece that make the piece enjoyable to play and to listen to.This arrangement is based on a version played by Hampshire Guitar Orchestra, and here it is re-worked to suit 4 guitars (or a large ensemble) with parts that are not too hard to play and which lock together well.The music is without dynamics but these can be added to make your performance personal to your group.The 4 lines are of slightly differing complexity, but an intermediate ensemble will find this arrangement is straightforward to play and yet captures much of the texture of the original Enya piece.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
