Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF193). 9 x 12 in inches.To the West Wind is a three-movement work, written in a lyrical, post-tonal style. The title alludes to Ode to the West Wind by nineteenth century British poet Percy Shelley. A breezy classicism in the first movement, Breath of Autumn, gives way to an elegiac second movement marked Grave. This movement, Tangles of Heaven, is dedicated to Toledo's great musical leader Bernard Sanchez who died in October, 2013. Heritage writes, While I was composing the quintet, the news came suddenly - and with a great sense of shock and tragedy - that Bernie had died. Deeply saddened, I realized that the second movement was taking shape as an elegy to a great friend. The flute plays an angular, emotional melody, accompanied by somber chords in the rest of the ensemble. An optimistic energy pervades the third movement, Crystalline Streams, interrupted by moments of lyricism and humor. Throughout the 10-minute work, Heritage explores the unique timbres of each instrument and the rich textures of the woodwind quintet. The Toledo Symphony Woodwind Quintet premiered To the West Wind at the 2015 Festival of New Music at The University of Toledo. Performers were Joel Tse, flute; Michele Tosser-Smith, oboe; Georg Klaas, clarinet; Sandra Clark, horn, and Gareth Thomas, bassoon.

The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux) is a humorous musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was written for private performance by an ad hoc ensemble of two pianos and other instruments, and lasts around 25 minutes.Originally scored Double bass and piano: this section is marked Allegro pomposo, the perfect caricature for an elephant. The piano plays a waltz-like triplet figure while the bass hums the melody beneath it. Like Tortues, this is also a musical joke-the thematic material is taken from the Scherzo from Mendelssohn's incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream and Berlioz's Dance of the Sylphs from The Damnation of Faust. The two themes were both originally written for high, lighter-toned instruments (flute and various other woodwinds, and violin, accordingly); the joke is that Saint-Saëns moves this to the lowest and heaviest-sounding instrument in the orchestra, the double bass.Arranged her for standard wind quintetI have given the tune to the bassoon with the horn taking the 8 bars of the Dance of the Sylphs music.The  notes of the chords are given to the other 3 instruments but not always tutti _ wind players have to breath!

Published by Ben Ledochowski (A0.1023643). Far to the westernmost regions of Russia, and then farther still, there is a place known as theDancing Forest of Kaliningrad. It is a mysterious, otherworldly place where trees grow in tangles,knots, and other unfathomable shapes, a place described by local psychics as a point of conflict where great positive and negative forces collide. Due to its remarkable air of mystery, the forest has woven its way into the legends and folklore of the region. My personal favorite legend about it goes as follows: The Prussian prince Barty used to hunt in these forests. Chasing a Roe deer one day, heheard a wonderful tune, and as he came to a field, he saw a beautiful girl playing a lyre. She was a Christian and her name was Predislava. The prince proposed to her but she replied that she would marry only a man of her faith. Prince Barty agreed to become a Christian as long as she could prove the power of her invisible God was more powerful than the surrounding trees. Predislava played her lyre. Birds grew silent, and the trees started dancing. The prince then took a bracelet from his hand and gave it to her as a token of their betrothal. On this very spot, many years later, there grew the Dancing Forest.This piece is my homage to the Dancing Forest of Kaliningrad and all its associated legends. Premiered by the Santa Teresa High School Concert Band in May 2019, the work is scored for a concert band of intermediate size and skill level and is designed to help introduce high school musicians to modal music and unconventional key signatures. Furthermore, the piece is inspired by multiple rhythmic and harmonic elements of rock and folk music in an attempt to help bridge the gap between popular music and contemporary wind ensemble repertoire. Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon) On the Trail is the third movement from Ferde Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite, written between 1929 and 1931; published in 1932. It has since become one of the most popular American musical works of the twentieth century, with On the Trail being the most well-known movement. It portrays a cowboy and his burro (donkey) sauntering through the Grand Canyon, coming across an oasis and a lonely cabin where they hear a music box playing, before continuing their journey. All this is portrayed in the music, including the braying sound of the donkey, its clip-clopping along and the cowboy singing a relaxed Western style song.This lovely and fun arrangement for wind quintet remains faithful to the original; retaining its structure, key and, where possible, its instrumentation. The only section omitted is the violin cadenza. The original orchestral work includes clarinets in Bb. This arrangement is also written for Bb clarinet but an alternative clarinet in A part is included, which is more suited to the key of the work.This is an ideal recital piece for either formal or informal concert settings. This is a brand new, original piece for wind quintet.I decided that I wanted to create a musical description of summer under lockdown, spending time in the garden (although there are no bird sounds) in the NorthWest of England. The weather here is usually very changeable (it's why we talk about it so much) so, of course, I included a thunderstorm in the middle!The piece opens with a gentle walk in the garden, (bassoon) the beautiful flowers swaying in the slight breeze (clarinet and horn). The oboe melody that enters in bar two expresses my thoughts of delight at the beautiful scene. The melody is passed around the ensemble, there's a duet with the flute and then the bassoon takes charge, with the horn taking over the walking bassline.At letter C there's an abrupt change of scene as I notice the bees busily flitting from flower to flower, pollenating and collecting nectar. The instruments play flutter-tongue to imitate an annoyed buzz every now and again as bees from different hives chance upon the same flower, but all remains peacefully business-like.At Letter D, we have a slight slowing of tempo as some butterflies flit from place to place, aimlessly taking off and landing fluttering for a short while in the sunshine. This section is as carefree as possible and should just amble along. The tempo can be pulled about quite a bit.At Letter F, there's a huge, sudden thunderstorm, jagged lightning and rolling thunder as a downpour drenches the garden. Just as suddenly as it started, the storm ends and rain reduces to a thin drizzle. Out comes the sun and we continue through the garden into the distance.

Part 3 is based on the scene in which Razumov is urged to visit Mrs. Haldin, an encounter Razumov dreads because it was he who informed on Haldin to the government. The final Part corresponds to the scene in which Razumov learns that news received from Russia has released him from suspicion for Haldin’s death by placing responsibility on an innocent man. The Suite was commissioned by a consortium of ensembles led by the Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh, who presented the world premiere performance on November 9, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787231). The Second Suite from Razumov derives from the second act of Razumov, Greg Bartholomew’s chamber opera based on the novel Under Western Eyes by Joseph Conrad. The opera tells the story of a young Russian, Razumov, who is caught up in the consequences when a fellow university student, Victor Haldin, assassinates a government minister. Themes for Part 1 are taken from the opening scene of Act Two, in which Haldin’s mother, in exile in Geneva and worried by the lack of news from her son, learns that Victor was the assassin and has now been caught and executed. Part 2 is an instrumental interlude. Part 3 is based on the scene in which Razumov is urged to visit Mrs. Haldin, an encounter Razumov dreads because it was he who informed on Haldin to the government. The final Part corresponds to the scene in which Razumov learns that news received from Russia has released him from suspicion for Haldin’s death by placing responsibility on an innocent man. The Suite was commissioned by a consortium of ensembles led by the Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh, who presented the world premiere performance on November 9, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. Whether we are journeying to the mountains or driving to work, mother nature is always on display. Therefore, I believe mother nature symbolizes pleasure, pain, and despair. Having the opportunity to grow up in New England and now living in Maine, I have seen a WIDE variety of weather within just a period of 24 hours! While living on the West Coast I will never forget my drive on the 395 going north and seeing the Sierra Nevada mountains (to my left) tall and grand with snow covered mountain tops! To the right, you would see and feel the hot desert! Although the performers do not need to envision mountaintops or deserts you need to respect the different sections and moods of the piece and know that everything is changing around us, all the time. As musical artists, we can convey our life journeys through our individual sound as well as the ensemble; whether it’s through enjoying nature, life’s challenges, and celebrations! Enjoy making traditional sounds and nontraditional sounds with your instrument.

The lyrics come from Defence of Fort M'Henry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the then 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory.The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith and renamed The Star-Spangled Banner. With a range of 19 semitones, it is known for being very difficult to sing. He also holds an Associate of Arts degree with a Music Education and Saxophone Performance concentration from Eastern Florida State College where he was a student of James Bishop. During his time at the Bower School of music, he served as principle saxophonist in the FGCU Wind Orchestra, lead alto in the Jazz Band Flight: Jazz at FGCU, and played soprano saxophone in the Bower Saxophone Quartet. Alexander was selected to play tenor saxophone in the 2017 National Intercollegiate Band as well as principle alto saxophone in the 2017 Florida All-State Intercollegiate Band and tenor saxophone in the 2016 Florida All-State Intercollegiate Band. For the composition commission, my author friend Sterling Wisniewski requested me to score a short story of his, with the score I provided being expected to tell the story of the words through music and accompany original artwork. His short story is included as follows:A cardboard boat sifts the surface of the sea. A little girl,eyes closed, arms wide and crowned with a paper hat, stands at the front of the deck. Unsinkable - that's what she was. Her imagination bounced the boat on the tension of theworld, almost like it wasn't there. Her eyes were closed, yet she saw everything. On shore, a crowd of dirty sailors went about their work. Nasty mouths swore and harsh fists carried their cargo to their strong, dirty boat. A boy, no taller than a barrel, was in the midst of the buff shoulders and fit forearms. He peaked between the muscle mountains.He saw her. Eyes closed and arms wide, sailing away from the Sun and into the appearing Moon. The wind flapped her hair like the sail of a boat. The boy pried between the men and ran to the end of the dock, stuck his flat hand over his forehead to see. The boy could've sworn that she saw him. He could've sworn the boat swooped in a foot from his face. He could've sworn he heard her giggle. If anything, he thought he knew she saw him.The boy's father, the largest of all the men, wearing a real sailor's hat, gripped the boy's shoulder, spun him away from view of the cardboard boat, and without a word dragged him to the solid wooden ship in front of them. The robust crew pulled ropes and pushed out to set sail towards the setting Sun in the west.The boy soon slipped out of his father's grip and ran to the edge of the boat. Ave Maria, Charles Gonoud/BACH The piece is composed of a melody by French Romantic composer Charles Gounod specially designed to overlap with Prelude No. Although published in instrumental versions and equipped for various texts during Gounod's lifetime, the claim that he never actually wrote it seems to be literally true. The version of Bach's prelude used by Gounod has the addition of a bar found only in the manuscript of Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke and the printed edition of Nikolaus Simrock which was based on it, but not in the other Bach manuscripts or the printed work of the scholar Bischoff or G. II. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Tchaikovsky The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is a dance for a ballerina. Tchaikovsky introduced the celesta to Russian music lovers on 19 March 1892 when the Nutcracker Suite was performed for the Russian Musical Society in St. Petersburg. It is heard in other parts of Act 2 of The Nutcracker besides the Sugar Plum Fairy's dance. The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is one of the ballet's best known musical numbers. The complete Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960s and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. Major American ballet companies generate around 40% of their annual ticket revenues from performances of The Nutcracker. III. Salut d'amour, Elgar It was not published by Schott & Co., a German publisher, with offices in Mainz, London, Paris and Brussels, until a year later, and the first editions were for violin and piano, piano solo, cello and piano, and for small orchestra. As a violin-and-piano piece Salut d'Amour had been recorded for The Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd (predecessor to The Gramophone Company) as early as 1901 by Jacques Jacobs, leader/director of the Trocadero Restaurant orchestra. IV. Nuptial March, Wagner It is a bridal march played at the entrance of many Western wedding ceremonies. In English-speaking countries, it is generally known as Here Comes the Bride or Wedding March, but wedding march refers to any piece in march tempo accompanying the entrance or exit of the bride, notably Felix Mendelssohn's Wedding March. Wagner's piece was made popular when it was used as the processional at the wedding of Victoria the Princess Royal to Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. Unlike the current tradition of it being played at the beginning of the ceremony, the work is performed after the wedding of Lohengrin and Elsa in the opera. V. Wedding March, Mendelssohn Felix Mendelssohn's Wedding March in C major, written in 1842, is one of the best known of the pieces from his suite of incidental music. The first known instance of Mendelssohn's Wedding March being used at a wedding was when Dorothy Carew wed Tom Daniel at St Peter's Church, Tiverton, England, on 2 June 1847 when it was performed by organist Samuel Reay. The original piano rag, which was once advertised by Joplin's publisher as being as high-class as Chopin, was composed upon the occasion of the World's Fair in St. Louis in 1904. This World's Fair was known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and celebrated the centennial of the historic event that doubled the size of the United States and launched an age of exploration and Western expansion. The fair, which attracted an estimated 20 million people from around the world, encouraged visitors to look back to the nation's frontier days while looking ahead to progress in the fields of technology, science, and medicine. Exhibits from fifty foreign countries and almost all of the states ensured that fairgoers had a good time.The cascades of Joplin's title were part of the most beautiful feature of the Exhibition, as a souvenir photo book from the fair phrased it. Fourteen waterfalls flowed into a basin in front of the fair's centerpiece, Festival Hall, with the Colonnade of States surrounding it. Festival Hall was the fair's main venue for music performances and housed the world's largest pipe organ at the time.
