These bursts of anger haunted me for years and only after composing this piece was I freed of my anger. I still listen to this piece from time to time during bouts of rage to remind myself that the only way to win a fight is make concessions and come to an agreement with yourself. I hope these melodies will relieve your aggression and leave you humming this tune anytime you are frustrated. This beautifully fitful piece was performed and recorded by the cellist Raúl Andueza in June of 2020.

The songs of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth's Magic Horn) by Gustav Mahler are set for voice and piano and voice and orchestra taken from German folk poems assembled and published by editors Arnim and Brentano around 1805-08. The Vier Lieder, beautifully edited for Euphonium and Piano by Ralph Sauer are taken from Mahler's fourth set of these poems published in 1899. The four songs are: I. Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht? (Who has created this song?) II. Lob des hohen Verstandes (In praise of lofty intellect) III. Verlor’ne Müh’ (Labor lost) IV. Lied des Verfolgten im Turm (Song of the persecuted in the tower) Mr. Sauer also includes German lyrics with English translations. Altogether the songs are about 12 minutes in length. The range is suitable for moderately advanced performers.

GENERAL PREFACE – ΓΕÎΙΚΟΣ ΠΡΟΛΟΓΟΣThis edition of violin and violoncello duets follows closely my publication of the same Greek folk pieces for classical guitar. The arrangements for guitar solo were written in two-part counterpoint and followed the strophic form of the folk songs involved. The melodic transcriptions of the folk melodies were not based in any particular performance, also avoiding the elaborate in many cases instrumental introductions associated with these songs. Thus, only the vocal melodies in a general recognizable version were presented. This new presentation for instrumental duets will stay with this generalised melodic version (without exploiting the instrumental introductions), but the form from strophic will become ternary (ABA). The weather was magnificent in May. Our friends Seph and Roger met us there. Being long-time veterans of Paris, they took us all over the city: Le Marais, the Left Bank, Montmartre, Sacré Coeur, Père LaChaise cemetery, Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Jardin du Luxembourg, Jardin des Tuileries, Notre Dame cathedral, Eiffel Tower, the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt, the canal at Saint Martin, etc. Since the weather was so great we basically stayed outside the entire two weeks. My wife Kris said that we had to return next again to Paris to go inside the museums. So we did. The weather in Paris after Christmas was very damp and chilly. So we did indoor activities: Le Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, Palais Garnier, etc. We even attended a beautiful performance of Swan Lake by the Paris Opera Ballet at L’Opéra Bastille. I should also mention that on both occasions I met up with a former student of mine from Berklee, Joe Makholm. He makes a living in Paris playing jazz piano. Joe got us a gig at the Swan Bar in Montparnasse. On the first occasion we did it as a trio with a French bass player. I played flute. On the second occasion, we did it as a duo. Playing jazz in Paris? You can’t beat that!!! Early this year, Steven Lipsitt and I had a chat about my writing a new work for the Boston Classical Orchestra. My last work for the BCO was a piano concerto with Robert Levin as soloist. I told Steven that this time I wanted to write a symphony. He said, Sure. Go ahead. I told him it would be about Paris. He said he would put Mozart’s Paris Symphony on the same program. I said, Fabulous! Symphony No. 8 … City of Light (2011) is in five movements. 1. La Seine Presto, Moderato 2. When the Reed sisters, Elizabeth & Lydia, asked me to write a new work for two pianos, I wasn't quite sure where or how to begin. Then I came upon a book on numerology by Annemarie Schimmel, The Mystery of Numbers. In it I discovered a lot of fascinating things, mystical and magical, associated with each number from one to 10,000. Since I would be writing a piece for a duo, double digits would do the trick. Number 22 stood out. It has two important associations: the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and there are 22 major arcana cards or allegories of the Tarot. Perfect! I could write 22 pieces, each a musical rendering of a card. And, coincidentally, this work will opus 66.For pictorial inspiration, I bought a Pierpont Morgan Library copy of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards from 15th century Italy. For musical inspiration, I listened to the wonderful salon music of the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and the Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth.The 22 pieces in the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards are: Zero Il Matto The Fool entertains the gathered guests with a tarantella.
