Published by Cat McGill (A0.887694). This is a poignant and haunting sea shanty, traditionally sung as the sailors were pumping out the ship at the end of the voyage, before they went home. Sometimes it was used to air their gripes about the trip, quality of the food etc(!) so I have chosen some of the less sweary verses from the ones I found, and edited slightly in places!It's arranged in four parts for a cappella community choir. I've scored it out as the tenors and basses leading and all parts joining on the refrain, but you can have everyone singing the lead in unison if you want.

One of America's most recognizable and beautiful folk tunes, Shenandoah had by the mid-ninteenth century achieved wide popularity on both land and sea.American folklorist Alan Lomax suggested that Shenandoah was a sea-shanty and that the composers likely were French-Canadian voyageurs traveling down the Missouri River — men who sought their fortunes as trappers and traders, loners who became friendly with and sometimes married Native American women. American sailors heading down the Mississippi River picked up the song and made it a capstan shanty — a work song — that they sang while hauling in the anchor.Various versions of the song, and various lyrics to the tune, exist. Some believe that the song refers to the Shenandoah river. Others suggest that it is of Native American origin and tells the tale of Sally, the daughter of an Algonquin Indian chief, Shenandoah, who is courted for seven years by a white Missouri river trader. Other versions of the song have linked it to riverboat men, cavalry men, mountain men, and Civil War soldiers. This traditional tune is well known as a farewell song, sung at the docks as the big ships were leaving.The song has two distinct parts: The Shanty and Halyard. This is a short arrangement for full orchestra. I also used this tune in my Australian Folksong Medley No. 2 for concert band/Brass Band and Orchestra. Published by Fiona Alice Hickie (A0.738161). This is a sea shanty commonly sung on the ships between England and Australia by the wool and wheat traders. Though a popular folk song in Australia, its origins are unknown and was sung with different lyrics in many parts of the world. Verses could be improvised and extra verses added. It was also known as 'Rollin' King' or 'South Australia'. Here it is scored for piccolos and drums, but can also be played on fifes or flute. As this arrangement uses the call and answer feel of the men at sea, the first part often does the call and both piccolos do the answer. An alternative 2nd piccolo part has been included where the 2nd piccolo player also does the call for a fuller effect.
