Second Line, some time called Joe Avery’s Blues, is a song written by the eponymous trombonist that is popular at second line parades. It is usually played at wedding receptions, parties, parades and at the end of a jazz funeral. The song is based on a simple 12-bar blues form and has a very sing-able melody. Before the melody starts, Trombone 1 plays a loud, high call to which the crowd responds, Hey! The group then proceeds to play the melody while second line parade festivities ensue. This arrangement, written at the Adv. Intermediate level for Trombone Quintet/Choir, is a fun and easy to perform tune for students or professionals. Solos for Trombone 1, Trombone 4, and Bass Trombone may be played as written or improvised with the included chord symbols. The song is a certain crowd pleaser perfect for getting the audience on their feet and clapping along. The rhythm of the arrangement is a funky caribe beat known as a bamboula. A bamboula was a primitive drum that made its way to New Orleans via Haiti during the 18th century. Enslaved people would gather in Congo Square, next to the French Quarter and dance to the rhythm of the bamboula. The dances also became known as a bamboula. The infectious beat made its way into the music of the early New Orleans Jazz Bands. Even today, if you visit Congo Square in New Orleans, you often find groups of musicians and dancers enjoying the beat of the bamboula!

Four Early Jazz Classics from the USA for Brass Quintet includes: 1)Little Brown Jug:It was originally a drinking song. It remained well known as a folk song into the early 20th century. Like many songs which make reference to alcohol, it enjoyed new popularity during the Prohibition era. In 1939, bandleader Glenn Miller recorded and broadcast his swing instrumental arrangement of the tune with great success, and the number became one of the best known orchestrations of the American Big Band era. 2)Frankie & Johnny:Frankie and Johnny (sometimes spelled Frankie and Johnnie; also known as Frankie and Albert or just Frankie) is a traditional American popular song. It tells the story of a woman, Frankie, who finds that her man Johnny was making love to another woman and shoots him dead. Frankie is then arrested; in some versions of the song she is also executed. 3)Tin Roof Blues:Tin Roof Blues is a jazz composition by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings first recorded in 1923. It was written by band members Paul Mares, Ben Pollack, Mel Stitzel, George Brunies and Leon Roppolo. The tune has become a jazz standard and is one of the most recorded and often played New Orleans jazz compositions. 4)Battle Hymn of the Republic:The Battle Hymn of the Republic, also known as Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory outside of the United States, is a song by American writer Julia Ward Howe using the music from the song John Brown’s Body. Howe’s more famous lyrics were written in November 1861, and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The song links the judgment of the wicked at the end of time (Old Testament, Isaiah 63; New Testament, Rev. 19) with the American Civil War. Since that time, it has become an extremely popular and well-known American patriotic song. UPC: 038081349756.A contemporary treatment of this traditional jazz tune, arranger and band director Mike Kamuf combines multiple generations in one chart. With a shuffle groove, the opening melody is stated by alto, tenor, trumpet and optional guitar in fourths. Some countermelody development, solo space (written) for tenor and trumpet, then an interlude that builds big time into a powerful shout chorus to bring it home. It's a happening chart. (4:04) This chart gives the New Orleans classic a funk treatment. The piece starts with a great introduction, and a vamp based on the melody follows each chorus. Written solos for the tenor sax and trumpet are in D minor and use some nice stylistic elements. -The Instrumentalist.
