Challenged by my friend André Granjo, I wrote this piece for Wind Instruments Group of Coimbra (GISC)​​, where André is now conductor. It is expected to be premiered during the first months of 2013, in collaboration with internationally renowned saxophonist Jean-Yves Fourmeau. I've been teenager GISC saxophonist, and with the group traveled through several European cities, which otherwise would have been impossible for me. I dedicate the Martim’s Legend to GISC and Professor Adelino Martins, who directed the group for decades, until his retirement this year. I related his name with a book I read, A Lenda de Martim Regos written by Pedro Canais and published in 2004. Martin, the main character, is born in Ribatejo (Portuguese province) in the fifteenth century, and his fate led him through Africa, America and Asia. Its amazing fictional story inspired me this music, because of travel, discovery, persistence and distracted absorbing knowledge.

More than just colleagues, they have become my friends: I've traveled with them, performed with them, watched them rehearse, dined with them in their homes and they in mine; I know their children and they know my children. Throughout the time I've known the members of the quartet I have observed the relationship between them, that special bond shared by the members of any touring band, described by one pundit as being like a bad marriage with no sex. Such issues notwithstanding, this particular marriage works. A string quartet represents, perhaps, the ultimate musical compromise between individual incentive and the common good. In a string quartet, by definition, four distinct instrumental voices and four different instrumental roles unite to create a whole greater than its parts. And, lest we forget, behind each instrument is a person, with his own particular attitudes, feelings, needs, and, yes, issues, all of which must be tempered and blended for the common good of a good performance. Among Friends is, its liberties aside, about the four people behind the instruments of the Alexander String Quartet and their relationships with one another; the way they play, rehearse, get along and, on occasion, not get along. The first movement, With Friends Like These is gritty and contentious in tone. The players argue, debate, annoy, tease, irk, cajole, abuse, harass, form brief alliances, heap merde upon, gang up on, and otherwise find endless ways to irritate each other. It is in this movement that the individual characters of the four instrumental parts stand in highest relief: the first violin as coloratura prima donna, forever attempting to soar above it all; the second violin as the voice in the wilderness, the viola as the voice of reason and the 'cello as mover and shaker. The opening of the movement is marked argument in progress; with greatest intensity. The second, third and fourth movements are a series of portraits, played without a break. In movement two, Inner Voices, the second violin and viola are featured in a collegial and decidedly non-contentious dialogue. Movement three, Little Hands and Little Feet, is the quiet center of the quartet. It is here that the first violin finally attains the lyric heights vainly sought in the first movement. The fourth movement is a vigorous dance entitled Freund Barry. This movement honors three great friends: Dr. Barry Gardiner, whose friendship and support made the writing of this quartet possible; Gustav Mahler, whose Symphony No. 4, second movement (Freund Heine) inspired this one; and Sandy Wilson, who first encouraged me to compose my second string quartet (Child's Play) for the Alexander in 1987 and whose boisterous 'cello is Freund Barry's alter-ego. The fifth movement is entitled Friendly Persuasion. Rapid fire repeated notes, accompanimental figures and melodic lines are shuttled about from voice to voice, each time elaborated or altered in some way. In this way the music slowly metamorphoses, ultimately arriving at a version of the argumentative music that concluded the first movement. Movement six, All For One and One For All is a fast, brief coda/finale, during which the quartet plays primarily in unison, the musical antithesis of the contentious argument that began the quartet. Theyare unfortunately also one of the most endangered mammals on Earth. This is in part to theirunique pack structure, where only ten percent of female wild dogs will mother pups. If a youngfemale wild dog wants to inhabit the role of a mother within a pack, they must disperse and finda new pack. More than half die while searching.This is the story of three who survived: The three travelers.In October 2021, three sisters of the Luamfwa African wild dog pack abandoned their pack. Atthree years old, if they did not seek a new pack, they would live as subordinates, without pups,for the remainder of their lives. The sisters were tracked by radio collar by researchers atMontana State University.These sisters traveled more than 1,300 miles, including multiple crossings of the Luangwa River,home to one of Africa’s largest crocodile populations; entering the Great Rift Valley, where theycrossed paths with several other packs, unsuccessfully; and even crossed the Great East Roadnear Lusaka, the primary route of travel between the capital cities of Zambia and Malawi. During the 2006-2007 academic year, Nash was fortunate to travel to Ghana, Spain and Vietnam. These experiences were quite profound and resulted in Nash composing new works that reflect those experiences. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE (2009) for symphonic wind ensemble is his first large ensemble composition written under this premise. Kora is a 21 stringed musical instrument from West Africa and KORA'S SONG AND DANCE is largely based on the tune Diabate’ by singer/songwriter Vieux Farke’ Toure’ of Mali. Diabate’ is also the name of well known kora musician, Toumani Diabate’ in which Toure’ dedicated the song to. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE uses melodies that are derived from the drone motif in Toure’s Diabate. Diabate’ is a medium tempo song with the drone motif occurring throughout and improvised melodies on top of the drone. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE begins with a slow introduction, featuring the alto sax and marimba. The rest of the ensemble gradually enters and builds to the end of the intro, transitioning to the next section by way of metric modulation. The next section builds with layers of instrumental textures, much like the intro and concludes with an English horn and piano duet. This particular pattern of musical events repeats, transitioning back to slow music, reminiscent of the intro and then ends big by going back to the faster tempo.

Edvard Grieg composed his Funeral March in Memory of Rikard Nordraak in 1866, in honour of his friend and fellow Norwegian composer Rikard Nordraak, who had died in March of that year at the age of 23. Grieg deeply respected his fellow musician and took no delay in producing the work. The march was originally written as a piano piece in A minor; Grieg also produced transcriptions of it for brass choir and wind band, in Bâ™ minor. Grieg valued the work greatly, bringing it along on all of his travels. In one letter he made it clear that he wished the piece to be played at his own funeral, as best as possible. It was played, in an orchestration by Grieg's friend and colleague Johan Halvorsen. This edition follows Grieg's own instrumentation but in a modern transposisition for the piccolo, flutes, trumpets, horns and trombones.

Recently, in May of 2021, he enlarged the melody with 10 voices and made the MP3 and this MTV., which includes the original poem, the English translation and back translation from English to modern Chinese. Due to the difference of lunar calendar and solar calendar about 1-2 months late. The original poem had used the February to show the month of flowering. But, that month does not have to many flowers to open. So, the translator used the April to replace the February. And the back translation to modern Chinese also used the fourth month. .
