Published by Ben Ledochowski (A0.1023643). Far to the westernmost regions of Russia, and then farther still, there is a place known as theDancing Forest of Kaliningrad. It is a mysterious, otherworldly place where trees grow in tangles,knots, and other unfathomable shapes, a place described by local psychics as a point of conflict where great positive and negative forces collide. Due to its remarkable air of mystery, the forest has woven its way into the legends and folklore of the region. My personal favorite legend about it goes as follows: The Prussian prince Barty used to hunt in these forests. Chasing a Roe deer one day, heheard a wonderful tune, and as he came to a field, he saw a beautiful girl playing a lyre. She was a Christian and her name was Predislava. The prince proposed to her but she replied that she would marry only a man of her faith. Prince Barty agreed to become a Christian as long as she could prove the power of her invisible God was more powerful than the surrounding trees. Predislava played her lyre. Birds grew silent, and the trees started dancing. The prince then took a bracelet from his hand and gave it to her as a token of their betrothal. On this very spot, many years later, there grew the Dancing Forest.This piece is my homage to the Dancing Forest of Kaliningrad and all its associated legends. Premiered by the Santa Teresa High School Concert Band in May 2019, the work is scored for a concert band of intermediate size and skill level and is designed to help introduce high school musicians to modal music and unconventional key signatures. Furthermore, the piece is inspired by multiple rhythmic and harmonic elements of rock and folk music in an attempt to help bridge the gap between popular music and contemporary wind ensemble repertoire. Suite for Brasswinds is an original work in three movements written for 3 trumpets, 2 horns, 2 trombones, euphonium and tuba. The three movements, as their titles suggests, are based off of plant life I often saw through my travels along the eastern sea board from Florida up to New York.  Blooming Blossoms is the slow opening and bursting of buds than can be beatiful and yet strangely uncommon to behold. Weeping Willow imbues the gently swaying branches of the tree, calmly blowing in the melancholy swamps. Dancing Vines is a march of the vines themselves as they climb there way through the trees and wrap around any and all trees they can cover.

When I composed this piece, autumn had just arrived and all the leaves were swaying gently in the trees; a strong wind would only knock a few down. When this would happen, I followed each leave's trail as it made it's way to the ground. It was simple, but it was beautiful. As autumn continued to ravage the trees, more and more of their leaves would fall, until it seemed anywhere you looked, a leaf was falling. The imagery of that autumn inspired this piano solo. I like to imagine this simple piece is for a pair of leaves that drift down, dancing, to the ground.

It is said that when an earthquake occurs, trees grow well.Though there is no evidence, the vibration of the earthquake seems to stir and condition the soil.Even through unprecedented disasters when the earth is cracked and the city is burnt, and even when people suffer from helplessness and anger, the trees (including apricot and blackberry branches) grow unaffectedly.Inger Christensen, the author of the poetry collection 'Alphabet', through her perceptive and lyrical senses, expressed that human beings are not managers of nature.On a lonely night, all we hear is the sound of crawling roots underneath the earth and rhythmic breathing of branches and leaves.....Not a few people consider classical music as something you listen to quietly while frowning. Tapping your feet to the rhythm is simply not acceptable. But I’ve always thought that classical music could be danceable - something that DJs can play at a club and you can move your body to.≪Tree dance≫, as the title suggests, is a musical piece featuring marimba and piano expressing the way trees dance in the wind. The music is almost like the classical version of craftwork, combining four-on-the-floor beats of techno music with the sharp sounds of modern music and organic poetry.I hope that the colorful musical notes on the score will be given life to and grow in this concert hall, creating a feast of dancing trees. I would be overwhelmed with joy to see the audience move their bodies or tap their feet to the rhythm of music. Marei Suyama
