This is the seventh of a set of twelve trio sonatas composed by 1694 and published in Amsterdam around 1695 by Estienne Roger. The sonatas composed for two violins and continuo for cello and organ were widely circulated in Europe and were greatly admired by Johann Sebastian Bach.This edition is an arrangement for flute, oboe & clarinet in Bb for players of intermediate standard and above who want to play music in authentic period style on modern instruments.In editing the seventh trio sonata obvious minor copying errors have been corrected without comment. Musical notation has been modernised. e.g. tied notes have replaced dotted notes where they cross a main accent or bar/measure line. Dynamic markings have not been added except when required to match the other parts. These are shown in parentheses ( ). Suggested phrasings are shown with dashed lines and all trills and mordants are edits. These are included as starting point suggestions and players should feel free to experiment with other ornamentation and choose their own dynamics.Changes of register have been made to suit the range of the wind instruments.

This is the fifth of six trio sonatas opus 5 first published in 1736. Although a clarinet would not have been available at the time of composition, the piece has been edited to preserve the Baroque style. Locatelli wrote the sonatas for violins or flutes with continuo and would have expected them to be played by what instruments were available. All edits are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. The clarinet part is in A. The three movements, Largo - Andante and Allegros in, respectively common and triple time provide equal independent parts for players of intermediate standard and above. The balance of the ensemble requires careful attention and players may wish to take turns to improvise short cadenzas at the pauses (fermatas).

Although this is an arrangement (the original was written for 2 violins & cello continuo), it has beenedited as an urtext edition so that players of modern instruments can perform it in an authentic style.All editings are clearly indicated in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. Sections of all parts have beentransposed up an octave to accommodate the ranges of the wind instruments. Players would have added ornaments e.g. mordants and trills especially during the repeats. Some of the more obvious have been indicated in parentheses. The only dynamic indications are in the Gigue for the final 2 bars/measures of each section. The convention of playing the repeated sections in a contrasting dynamic (loud - soft or soft - loud) would have sufficed for the other movements. Slurs would have been added at the discretion of the players especially in the slow movements.The six movements, Sonata, Gavotte, Treza, Aria, Saraband & Gigue are suitable for players of advanced intermediate standard and above. The movements are: Allegro, Largo, Presto, Adagio, Poco presto, Lento & Prestissimo. Written for players of equal ability and of intermediate standard and above, the sonata has been carefully edited, additions are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines.Buxtehude was famous during his lifetime for his skill as an organist and composer. Both Handel and J.S. Bach travelled to hear him play (at different times). Bach stayed to study with him for three months. Handel departed after one night when he learned that Buxtehude (who wanted to retire) was looking for an organist to succeed him, a condition of taking the post being the necessity to marry Buxtehude's eldest daughter who was some years older than Handel.

Each sonata has 4 movements and, while technically within the capabilities of players of intermediate standard, they require a more sophisticated level of ornamentation especially in the slow movements. An opportunity for a trio to develop their improvisational skills together, perhaps. First listen to good recordings of these pieces in their original scoring and imitate before experimenting with your own ideas.
