Trio Sonata in C is a pleasant little work by the mostly unknown German Baroque composer Johann Georg Linike. Although called a trio sonata, it does not follow the typical format of a Baroque trio sonata. Each of the three movements are quite short – think of it as a trio sonata in miniature. Together, all three movements take less than five minutes to perform. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd parts are included for both E flat and B flat instruments. The parts may be combined as desired. The short length and moderate range of the piece make this a good choice for intermediate players. Movement 1, Allegro in C major, is in common time. Movement 2, Adagio in A minor, is in  common time. Movement 3, Vivace in C major, is in 3/4 time.

This Trio Sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1712 for pairs of ‘flûtes traversieres, flûtes a bec, violons, hautbois, &c.’ with continuo by Mr. Hotteterre, Flûte de la Chambre du Roy. They were dedicated to the Duke of Orleans and published ‘avec privilege du Roy.’ The first Sonata has been edited and arranged for flute, oboe & clarinet in Bb. The four movements, Prelude, Fugue, Grave and Gigue, are in the Baroque style with the interest equally shared between the three parts. Dynamics in the 1712 edition are French - doux and fort. These have been standardised as p & f. The top parts were printed in the soprano clef - with g on the bottom line as was common in France at the time. Amusingly this led to some modern ill informed speculation about flutes of the period being expected to play low bs! In this edition all edits are shown using parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. The Trio is suitable for players of intermediate standard and above and provides repertoire in the French Baroque style for an ensemble of players just a few years beyond the reach of Hotteterre.

The Piano Trio in C minor Op.143 was published by Schott in 1826, but could have been composed much earlier for Ries's personal use in the London concert halls. It is an imposing work, whose gruff tone and serious purpose recall Beethoven's use of this key. The first movement is an impressive sonata-form movement extending to a length of almost 250 bars. It contains two strikingly contrasted themes, one aggressively assertive, the other of a more lyrical, tender character (parallels to Beethoven's thematic tendencies in sonata-form movements are once again clearly apparent). The Adagio movement, cast in the rich colours of A flat major (the tonic minor - flat submediant major key relationship recalls Beethoven once again) contains some moments of real beauty and musical insight. The piano is often centrestage, its florid lines and ornamental flourishes reminiscent of another of Ries's contemporaries, Hummel. The technique of connected second and third movements seen in this work is not new but was a trend established in the piano trio genre by Joseph Haydn in the 1780s and 90s. The oasis of calm and tranquillity created in the Adagio is shattered dramatically by the jagged arpeggio figure which launches the finale. This extremely fast movement - the metronome marking indicates that the music should be felt in two, not in four - is characterised by the tarantella topos. It is a tremendously exciting movement, whose swirling energy and frantic pace is only reined in at the final cadence. The present edition reproduces as faithfully as possible the text of the trio as transmitted in Schott's 1826 edition of the work, a copy of which is preserved in the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. The metronome markings at the head of each movement derive from this source. The piano compass extends from E flat 1 to a flat 4, a range of just over six octaves. Pedal markings indicated in the source have not been included in the current edition since these are generally very instrument-dependent. Minor rhythmic inconsistences between different statements of the same theme have been retained (e.g. first movement, second subject, bb.51-52, cello and 188-89, violin), as have some differences in phrasing between successive thematic statements (cf. finale, piano bb.3-6 and violin bb.18-21). The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout, and, where missing from the print, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets where appropriate. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment, and editorial emendations with no authority from the print are placed within brackets. Dianne James.

This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

The Six Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530 were composed about 1727 during Bach’s period in Leipzig. They were not composed for organ, but (according to Forkel, Bach’s first biographer whose information came from Bach’s son Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach) for the pedal harpsichord as means of improiving the pedal technique of his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. This instrument, which requires a great deal of precision in performance, contains a normal harpsichord with two manuals attached to a pedal board which activates another harpsichord which is lower to the ground. Many of the movements in these Italian sonatas were used in other settings, in Bach’s Cantatas and in other instrumental works.Bach always tuned his own keyboards and confided his tuning system to his student Johann Kimberger (1721-1788) who used this information to devise several tuning schemes to create a well-tempered system according to Bach’s ideas. The main principal that Bach gave Kimberger was that all thirds should be tuned slightly sharp (...alle grossen Terzen scharf). The saxophone is an ideal instrument to experiment with this sort of tuning, given the possibilities for adjustment in the embouchure. The four movements, Andante, Allegro, Largo and Allegro are typical of the other opus 2 sonatas and provide interesting parts for all three players. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy the musical challenge. All editing is clearly indicated using dashed lines and parentheses ( ). Some changes of register have been made- mostly moving the flute part up an octave to balance the oboe part and avoid middle C which would not have been available on most flutes of the period. Handel's dynamic markings are very sparse and I have refrained from adding more than a few very obvious ones as there are so many possibilities and it is so much more satisfying for players to decide for themselves.
