The variations are: Lobster Jazz Waltz, Sea-anemone Belly-dance, Tuna Tune, Luminous Light Show, Dolphin Fling, Jaws Serial and Blues Whale Pavane.The piece lasts about eight minutes with repeats.TECHNICAL NOTE The C harmonics will be a pip flat--they are only bursting bubbles anyway!Scuba Fins tries to feel the quiet calmness and agelessness of the underwater world, using the ancient and universal major pentatonic scale C,D,E, G,A ,C. The rhythm is mostly steady and simple, but triplets indicate the occasional extra effort. Now and again, he glances down at the infinite depths. Tintinnabulation and soft staccatissimo arpeggios represent the bubbles. The opening slow trill will chill you as it invokes the Jaws film theme by John Williams. You might even hear the diver's heart sink and the snap pizzicato of the teeth snapping. The prime row is the nearest possible to the original theme: Bb, Ab, F, Eb, B, C, E, G, Db, D, Gb.A, but I have followed the contours of the main themes. Blues Whale is a pavane, a slow, stately processional incorporating the typical renaissance drum rhythm. and using a blues scale, G, A, Bb, C, C#, D, F, G, and an implied 12-bar minor blues harmony.

The swung rhythm is written in eighths rather than triplets and requires a few shifts between half, first, and second positions. Helpful bowings and thoughtful dynamics and articulations are included. The piano part is a true accompaniment and does not double the melody throughout. This arrangement has been transposed from the original key to C Major for ease of playing. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755276). The title Inventions' has a double meaning. The first meaning is that each movement represents a significant invention. The second meaning is each movement has sections reminiscent of a musical invention, a short contrapuntal composition that is usually based on a single theme. Movement 1 – The Wheel – This movement is a perpetual motion in triple meter. Movement II – The Metronome - The music in this movement represents a mechanical, wind-up metronome. Movement III – The Periscope - The movement is in an ABA'B' form. The A section, with its dark colors and slow 6/8 represents a submarine, lurking under water. The B section begins with ominous sounds that accompany the rising of the periscope and the scanning of the horizon for destroyers and for prey. Movement IV – Morse Code – The form of this movement is ABA’B’AB’’A’Coda. The A section rhythmically spells out the words brass trio in Morse code, first homophonically and then contrapuntally. The B sections spell out the names of the instruments playing the musical line in Morse code. The Coda spells out the words the end in Morse code. Movement V – The Airplane - This movement begins with a celebratory section in 7/8 and 6/8 representing the success of the Wright Brothers. After this festive beginning, a sustained melody represents the first flight that lasted 12 seconds with Orville at the controls. This melody also lasts 12 seconds. Accompanying the sustained melody is the steady staccato eighth note rhythm representing the sound of the motor. After a short celebratory interlude, another sustained melody of flight occurs with Wilbur is at the controls. The staccato eighth note motor accompaniment changes into a flowing triplet figure during 59-second flight, the longest of 1903. The flight melody now lasts 59 seconds as well. After a soft landing of the flight melody, the celebration theme ends the movement in a festive and exciting manner.

A piece in C minor for fortepiano, entirely based on five sketches by Beethoven: Biam. 349b (1802-1803), Biam. 280 (c. 1800), Biam. 349a (1802-1803), Biam. 467 (1808), and Biam. 472 (1808). Its interest lies in the combination and adjustment of the respective fragments, to result in a fluent piece in late Classical style. The sketches were expanded to exploit a bit their passing ideas (the double bars in the score indicate the end of the original material). A mysterious introduction in C minor (Largo, Biam. 349b) is continued by modulations reminding of the Introduzione to the Finale of Beethoven’s Op. 53 and linking it to the vivacious central section, with triplets (first, Allegro assai, in B major as a possible reading of Biam. 280, which was originally written down without a key signature). This is continued by a section in A major (Biam. 349a) and then in D minor, in triple time (Biam. 467). After a sudden stop, the mysterious introduction in C minor returns abbreviated, ending discretely in C major. Composed for the contest at the Centro Ricerche Musicali (C.R.M.) LVBEETHOVEN Italy.
