Clarinet Duet Clarinet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.587665 Composed by Henry Purcell. Arranged by David McKeown. Baroque,Concert,Instructional,Standards,Wedding. 2 scores. 3 pages. David McKeown #4729525. Published by David McKeown (A0.587665). The Trumpet Tune and Air was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite. This full version is arranged as a duet for two Clarinets and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. There are of course separate piano and instrumental parts included in downloaded the file.Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with strict time, full tone and dynamic contrast. By Herbie Hancock. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Score, Set of Parts. 22 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Arranged for Clarinet Quintet & optional drumset, "Watermelon Man" is a jazz standard written by Herbie Hancock, first released on his debut album, Takin' Off (1962), in a grooving hard bop version that featured improvisations by Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordon.<br> <br> A single of the tune reached the Top 100 of the pop charts. Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaría released the tune as a latin pop single the next year on Battle Records, where it became a surprise hit, reaching #10 on the pop charts. Santamaría's recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Hancock radically re-worked the tune, combining elements of funk, for the album Head Hunters (1973).<br> <br> Hancock's first version was released as a grooving hard bop record, and featured improvisations by Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordon. A single reached the Top 100 of the pop chart. Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaría released the tune as a Latin pop single and it became a surprise hit, reaching No. 10 on the pop chart.[2] Santamaría's recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Hancock radically re-worked the tune, combining elements of funk, for the album Head Hunters (1973).<br> <br> Hancock wrote the piece to help sell his debut album as a leader, Takin' Off (1962), on Blue Note Records; it was the first piece of music he had ever composed with a commercial goal in mind. The popularity of the piece, due primarily to Mongo Santamaría, paid Hancock's bills for five or six years. Hancock did not feel the composition was a sellout however, describing that structurally, it was one of his strongest pieces due to its almost mathematical balance.<br> <br> The form is a sixteen bar blues. Recalling the piece, Hancock said, "I remember the cry of the watermelon man making the rounds through the back streets and alleys of Chicago. The wheels of his wagon beat out the rhythm on the cobblestones." The tune, based on a bluesy piano riff, drew on elements of R&B, soul jazz and bebop, all combined into a pop hook. Hancock joined bassist Butch Warren and drummer Billy Higgins in the rhythm section, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Dexter Gordon on tenor saxophone. Hancock's chordal work draws from the gospel tradition, while he builds his solo on repeated riffs and trilled figures.<br> <br> Hancock filled in for pianist Chick Corea in Mongo Santamaría's band one weekend at a nightclub in The Bronx when Corea gave notice that he was leaving. Hancock played the tune for Santamaría at friend Donald Byrd's urging. Santamaría started accompanying him on his congas, then his band joined in, and the small audience slowly got up from their tables and started dancing, laughing and having a great time. Santamaría later asked Hancock if he could record the tune. On December 17, 1962, Mongo Santamaría recorded a three-minute version, suitable for radio, where he joined timbalero Francisco "Kako" Baster in a cha-cha beat, while drummer Ray Lucas performed a backbeat. Santamaría included the track on his album Watermelon Man (1962). Santamaría's recording is sometimes considered the beginning of Latin boogaloo, a fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with those of R&B<br> <br> Hancock re-recorded the tune for Head Hunters (1973), combining synthesizers with a Sly Stone and James Brown funk influence, adding an eight-bar section. Hancock described his composition "Chameleon", also from Head Hunters, to Down Beat magazine in 1979: "In the popular forms of funk, which I've been trying to get into, the attention is on the rhythmic interplay between different instruments. The part the Clavinet plays has to fit with the part the drums play and the line the bass plays and the line that the guitar plays. It's almost like African drummers where seven drummers play different parts"; "Watermelon Man" shares a similar construction. A live version was released on the double LP Flood (1975), recorded in Japan.<br> <br> On the intro and outro of the tune, percussionist Bill Summers blows into beer bottles imitating hindewhu, a style of singing/whistle-playing found in Pygmy music of Central Africa. Hancock and Summers were struck by the sound, which they heard on the ethnomusicology LP, The Music of the Ba-Benzélé Pygmies (1966), by Simha Arom and Geneviève Taurelle.<br> <br> This version was often featured on The Weather Channel's Local on the 8s segments.<br> <br> The tune is a jazz standard and has been recorded over two hundred times. Hancock's recording has been sampled in "1-900-LL-Cool-J" from Walking with a Panther (1989) by LL Cool J, "Open Your Eyes" from Organized Konfusion (1991) by Organized Konfusion, "Smoke Some Kill" from Smoke Some Kill (1988) by Schoolly D, and "Pocket Full of Furl" from Uptown 4 Life (1996) by U.N.L.V. In 2003, pianist David Benoit covered the song from his album Right Here, Right Now.<br> <br> A live and funky performance at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival Casino Lights '99 featured Fourplay, George Duke, Boney James and Kirk Whalum trading choruses, and Rick Braun.

Clarinet Quintet,Woodwind Ensemble Bass Clarinet,E-Flat Clarinet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1271363 By Duke Ellington/Barney Bigard. By Duke Ellington/Barney Bigard. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Historic,Jazz,Multicultural,Standards,World. 11 pages. Keith Terrett #863759. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1271363). C Jam Blues is a jazz standard composed in 1942 by Duke Ellington and performed by countless other musicians, such as Dave Grusin, Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson, and Charles Mingus, arranged here for Clarinet Quintet. The Eb & Bb Clarinet 4 are optional. As the title suggests, the piece follows a twelve-bar blues form in the key of C major. The tune is well known for being extremely easy to play, with the entire melody featuring only two notes: G and C.A performance typically features several improvised solos. The melody likely originated from the clarinetist Barney Bigard in 1941, but its origin is not perfectly clear. It was also known as Duke's Place, with lyrics added by Bill Katts, Bob Thiele and Ruth Roberts.Ellington's black and white film was produced in 1942. The video depicts a jam session where Ellington begins playing with a double bass before gradually being joined by other members of his band, among them drummer Sonny Greer and trumpeter Rex Stewart. The film title is Jam Session. Western Swing band leader Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys recorded the song sometime between 1945 and 1947 as part of the Tiffany Transcriptions. Bill Doggett recorded a version on his 1958 tribute album Salute to Duke Ellington (King). C Jam Blues was used by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band as the basis of their song The Intro and the Outro. Mulgrew Miller and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen included the song in their 1999 album The Duets. The Dave Brubeck Quartet performed this live at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival; the recording appears in their album Newport 1958.

Traditional sailor's song arranged for German Band with two clarinets, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and optional drums. Includes a full score and all parts. Includes optional lyrics that let you sing a verse! Key of F. 81 measures, 20pages.Barnacle Bill the Sailor is an American drinking song adapted from Bollocky Bill the Sailor, a traditional folk song originally titled Abraham Brown. The first printed version of the song is in the public domain book Immortalia (1927). Later versions feature the eponymous Barnacle Bill, a fictional character loosely based on a 19th-century San Francisco sailor and Gold Rush miner named William Bernard. Versions are also known in England and Scotland from the early twentieth century. One version of Barnacle Bill refers to an exchange between Bill and a fair young maiden. Each verse opens with inquiries by the maiden, sung by women, or by men in falsetto, and continues with Bill's profane responses sung by men.Barnacle Bill the Sailor (Roud 4704) is an American drinking song adapted from Bollocky Bill the Sailor, a traditional folk song originally titled Abraham Brown.[1]There are several versions of the bawdy song in the Gordon Inferno Collection at the Library of Congress folklife archive. The first printed version of the song is in the public domain book Immortalia (1927). Later versions feature the eponymous Barnacle Bill, a fictional character loosely based on a 19th-century San Francisco sailor and Gold Rush miner named William Bernard.[2] Versions are also known in England and Scotland from the early twentieth century. The earliest known recording is an expurgated adaptation by Carson Robison and Frank Luther in 1928. This version was also recorded on May 21, 1930 by Bix Beiderbecke and Hoagy Carmichael with Carson Robison on vocals and released as a Victor 78, V-38139-A and 25371. In 1996 it was released on CD on the album Bix Beiderbecke 1927–1930.[3] According to Philip R. Evans, Bix Beiderbecke's biographer, in the second chorus of this recording, violinist Joe Venuti can be heard singing Barnacle Bill the Shit-head, either to express his attitude toward the record producer, or typical of his wacky sense of humor. Esten Spurrier, a friend of Beiderbecke's, is quoted by Evans as saying that Beiderbecke told him he could not believe the record would be pressed and had felt that it had been done just for laughs. Beiderbecke cut loose on the tune with what is believed to be one of his finest cornet solos. John Valby (aka Dr. Dirty) also recorded the song. The tune has inspired a Fleischer Studios Betty Boop cartoon and two films, as well as the name of a rock on Mars. Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five (then known as The Elks Rendezvous Band) recorded a clean version in 1938.[4] In the first Fleischer Popeye cartoon, Popeye the Sailor (1933), Barnacle Bill was used as the recurring theme for the Bluto character. A later Fleischer Popeye cartoon, Beware of Barnacle Bill (1935), is a mock operetta based around a toned-down version of the song.Example of lyrics[edit]One version of Barnacle Bill refers to an exchange between Bill and a fair young maiden. Each verse opens with inquiries by the maiden, sung by women, or by men in falsetto, and continues with Bill's profane responses sung by men.

Arranged by John McAllister. Folk,Multicultural,Religious,Spiritual,Traditional,World. 21 pages. John McAllister #744044. Published by John McAllister (A0.1143721). This is an arrangement of the famous folk tune Amazing Grace. It is for adaptable trio and can be played with varying instrumentation that includes a soprano, alto, and bass voice. Some options might include: brass trio (trumpet, horn, trombone or tuba), saxophone trio (alto sax, tenor sax, Bari sax), clarinet trio (two Bb clarinets and a bass), mixed woodwind trio (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet or Bari sax). There are many possibilities allowing max-compatibility for performing musicians. This trio and others might be good in specific settings: solo & ensemble festivals, street musicians and buskers, gigs at events and dinners (as background OR foreground music), small groups on concerts, pre-concert chamber music. Music educators and band directors might find these particularly useful when developing a chamber ensembles program. Because of the adaptable nature, various combinations can be utilized. They can also be taught to the full ensemble, then individuals can perform in small groups.

Program note: My love affair with the city of Rome dates back to the year 1986-87 when I spent just under eleven months at the American Academy in Rome on a Rome Prize Fellowship. During that Fellowship year I was very much inspired by the beauty and culture of the Eternal City, which resulted in a number of works that continue to resonate with me: Twenty-nine Fireflies Book II for solo piano; Concertino for trumpet, timpani and strings; Apples … six dreams by Richard Kenney; String Quartet No 5 … Four Birthdays; and Chôrinhos … opus 38. Since 1997 my wife, Kristin Beckwith, and I have returned to the American Academy in Rome almost every year. I would compose in the morning and then my wife and I would go to our usual haunt at Bar G. for cappuccini and cornetti. And then we’d go to the local bakery and street markets and buy stuff for lunch. In the afternoon we would wander into the city to go shopping and sight-seeing. In the evenings we would dine at one of our favorite local trattorias. Life could not be better in Rome. Musically speaking, several important works in my portfolio had their beginnings during these sojourns at the Academy , among them Yo Picasso, Flauta Carioca, Mass for the Holy Year 2000, Symphony No. 5 … Utopia Parkway, Twenty-nine Fireflies Books IV & V, and Piano Concerto … Mozartiana. Just before the 2008 recession, clarinetist extraordinaire Jonathan Cohler asked me to write a symphony for the inaugural concert of a new orchestra he was planning to create. I came up with Symphony No. 7 … Roman Holidays, my give back to the city of Rome – a compendium of favorite places that continue to live in my thoughts and musings. Although the work is heard in four movements, it is actually divided into seven sections, as in the seven hills of Rome. 1. Prelude: Fontana Paola and the panoramic view of the city of Rome from that vantage point. 2. First interlude: La Befana festivities at Piazza Navona. The Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio at night under a full moon. 3. Second interlude: Fontana delle Tartughe in the Jewish Ghetto. Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne at the Galleria Borghese. 4. Third interlude: Bernini’s Beata Ludovica Albertoni in Trastevere. The Spanish Steps and the view of Rome from the French Academy at Villa Medici. NB: Unfortunately, thanks to the recession, Roman Holidays never saw the light of day. This year (2013) I decided to revisit the work, which lay dormant for 5 five years, and saw that it could use a little tweaking. The new version is essentially the same, musically speaking. I reduced the orchestration a bit (two horns instead of four, and two trumpets instead of three) and added more heft to the lower brass. I completely rewrote the tune for the floating foreign ghosts at the Protestant Cemetery. I also shortened the work by about three minutes by cutting some repeats. Enjoy!!!Audio link: https://thomasoboelee.bandcamp.com/album/symphony-no-7-roman-holidays-2008-rev-2013Video link: https://youtu.be/1DlzEOUmH54

This pack contains over 900 pages of music for mixed ability ensembles. There are 4 original pieces and 5 Christmas pieces, as follows:<br> <br> <br> The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series<br> <br> Children (and adults) who learn a musical instrument will always progress at different rates.Students also develop some of the many skills involved in instrumental playing faster than other skills.<br> <br> The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series has the flexibility to allow pupils of different standards to play together in one ensemble (up to five parts). It also encourages students to develop improvisation skills by providing soloing opportunities within all parts, with suggested pitches for improvising.<br> <br> Each piece has five different parts which are split into four ability levels as follows:<br> <br> A – Range of about 5 notes, easy rhythms. B – Range of about 1 octave, basic rhythms. C – Range of about a 12th, some more difficult rhythms. D – Range of about 2 octaves, some rhythmic complexity.<br> <br> This enables the teacher to select parts which are suitable for the standard of individual players in the group. As a general rule, the pieces have been composed as follows:<br> <br> Part 1 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 2)<br> <br> Part 2 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 1)<br> <br> Part 3 – accompaniment (synchronises with Part 4)<br> <br> Part 4 –accompaniment (synchronises with Part 3)<br> <br> Part 5 – bass line (independent)<br> <br> Each part also comes in a wide array of transpositions, clefs and pitches. Hence, almost any combination of instruments can play together in an ensemble of mixed abilities, including:<br> <br> Flutes, clarinets, saxophones, mixed woodwind, trumpets, mixed brass (including brass band), violins, strings, keyboards/pianos, tuned percussion.<br> <br> An ensemble using any combination of instruments (as is often found within schools) will work effectively as well.<br> <br> Example: A quintet might be selected as follows:<br> <br> 1A (violin), 2C(trumpet), 3B (clarinet), 4B (tenor sax), 5D (trombone)<br> <br> The melody in 1A would be very simple but would contrast nicely when passed to the more difficult 2C. Parts 3B and 4B will have quite a simple accompaniment between them, whilst the bass line on 5D will be more complex and rhythmically interesting. Parts can obviously be doubled up as well beyond five players.<br> <br> Please note that the teacher of the ensemble should be careful to pick parts which are well-suited to the players’ abilities.<br> <br> This pack includes all four pieces in the series (volumes 1 and 2) as follows:<br> <br> BANANA BLUES is a 12-bar Blues piece<br> <br> CRAZY LATIN! has additional parts for Latin percussion commonly found in the classroom<br> <br> IT'S TIME FOR REGGAE! is a reggae piece<br> <br> FEEL THE FUNK brings funky, James Brown-esque rhythms into the classroom.<br> <br> Please listen to the mp3 file, which is an electronic example of a typical classroom setup.<br> <br> Score and all parts are included here in a variety of pitches, clefs and transpositions. It is the complete package with over 680 pages of music, representing a massive saving on individual purchase prices.<br> <br> <br> <br> 5 Christmas pieces:<br> <br> Each piece is arranged into 13 different parts which cater for the large majority of musicians within school. These include: <br> <br> * a variety of difficulties in C, B flat, E flat, higher octave for flutes and alto clef for violas <br> <br> * easy and standard bass parts in treble and bass clefs, and also in B flat and E flat for saxophones or brass band players <br> <br> * very easy violin and viola parts on open strings only <br> <br> * easy and standard piano parts <br> <br> * ukulele part in tab, chord patterns and chord letters <br> <br> * guitar part in tab, chord patterns and chord letters <br> <br> * general chord plan in chord letters <br> <br> Teachers / band leaders can select the parts which are most appropriate for their students. The music is intended to be repeated a number of times, with different parts coming in and out for each repeat to create variety.<br> <br> Printing and Copying<br> <br> The purchaser may print or copy all pages of this resource as required in order to facilitate a performance, but must not distribute to others.<br> <br> ** Also check out my Scales and Arpeggios Pack - excellent methods for learning scales and arpeggios at all levels (copy and paste into new tab) https://tinyurl.com/y8wl3qnq **

Clarinet Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Bass Clarinet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.937294 Composed by Horatio Spafford, Philip Bliss. Arranged by Hugh Levey. Praise & Worship,Sacred. 19 pages. Woodwindly.com #6529745. Published by woodwindly.com (A0.937294). Clarinet Quartet - 3 x Bb Clarinets and Bass Clarinet The words of this hymn were inspired by a series of tragedies in the life of hymn writer, Horatio Spafford. He lost his 4 year old son in a Chicago fire in 1871 and two years later he lost all 4 of his daughters when the ship, SS Ville du Havre, sank while they were travelling from the USA to England. Only his wife survived the journey. He wrote these words while he travelled alone to meet his grieving wife shortly afterwards. The hymn was first published in 1876, set to a tune by Philip Bliss which is still known as Ville du Havre. It exists in versions with either 4 or 5 verses. This arrangement for clarinet quartet consists of 5 verses, each with slightly altered harmonisation or articulation, to suit the words. For example in verse 3 the words Nailed to the Cross are accompanied by accented stabbing chords. Verse 5 has some trumpet-like fanfares to match the reference to the Trump[et] Calls in the text. The words to the hymn are shown in the score and in the first clarinet part, so the arrangement can be used in a worship setting. Verses can be omitted to suit your liturgical needs. Similarly, if the arrangement is used for an instrumental performance, verses can be omitted as required. Duration: 5’ to 5’30 Â

Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.553781 Composed by George Butterworth. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Spiritual,Standards. 52 pages. RayThompsonMusic #4350463. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553781). The Banks of Green Willow The original is a short orchestral piece by George Butterworth, probably the most played of his three works for orchestra. It has certainly been his most recorded orchestral work. Described by its composer as an Idyll, and written in 1913, it is scored for a small orchestra consisting of two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, one trumpet, harp and strings.Butterworth based The Banks of Green Willow on two folk song melodies that he noted in 1907 - The Banks of Green Willow and Green bushes. This popular piece is often used on TV in programmes with wholesome panoramic views of the British countryside. It has a relaxing pastoral English feel to it.This arrangement is in the original key so requires 2 clarinets in A. (alternate clarinets in Bb are provided)I have arranged it for wind dectet (double wind quintet) and bass.Opt. tuba/contra bassoon. I have also added an optional cut, avoiding the middle section, so that you can play it as reflective background music..There is an additional bar, to be omitted in the full version, and played in the cut one!The 4th mvt of Percy Aldridge Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy The Lost Lady Found has a similar tune to Green BushesI have arranged it for wind dectetThe mp3 is a live performance by Alliance Classical Players of New York on 21 June 2023.You can also purchase my wind quintet arrangement of Green Willow.I have also arranged English Idyll No.1 for wind dectet.https://youtu.be/_3YQfpnwaE4.

Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.723125 Composed by Juan de Arriaga. Arranged by Joel Jacklich (ASCAP). Classical. Score and parts. 32 pages. Joel Jacklich #3377517. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723125). PROGRAM NOTE: Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert of Premieres each May. He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year. Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart). The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old. The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D, two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum. I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas, bass drum, and glockenspiel. As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for young, less experienced players. I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is probably the one which will probably need to be played. Woodwind Ensemble Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.814535 Composed by Franz Xaver Gruber. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Christmas,Instructional,Multicultural,World. 12 pages. Regis Bookshar #6636671. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.814535). Woodwind Octet - Intermediate - Digital Download. This arrangement of Silent Night, or in German, Stille Nacht, would be a wonderful addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts, recitals, and, especially, church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (12 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Silent Night is probably the most popular Christmas carol ever written. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single. In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. Also, in addition to this version for a Woodwind Octet, consisting of 2 Flutes, 1 Oboe, 3 Clarinets, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, there are other arrangements of Silent Night available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. There are Quintets and Octets readily available for purchase. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that might also suit your needs.I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. I'm certain that this wonderful arrangement of Silent Night will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBS163-S). 9 x 12 in inches.March of the Shadows is a Grade 1 1/2 work for second-year elementary band. As a veteran elementary band director,I am keenly aware of what students are able to accomplish at this level. March of the Shadows is a fun, slightlychallenging, and completely achievable work. It is a work that would be useful at the beginning of the school yearwhen it feels too summery to begin holiday music. March of the Shadows would be perfect for a Halloween orAutumn Concert.March of the Shadows begins with a whistle! It calls the show by announcing each new section of the piece. (Astudy of form.) It even reacts to a momentary modulation. The whistle part has all sorts of fun staging potential, including having it played by the director! The initial whistle is followed by a percussion introduction which sets thebeat. Seven percussion parts, three of them optional, have been included so that everyone in a large percussionsection will be kept engaged and out of trouble! The body of the work includes two alternating themes, one dark andshadowy in minor, the other bright, heroic and slightly syncopated in major. Every part gets the melody at somepoint, even the low brass and woodwinds! Ranges are all standard for early second-year band players, i.e. clarinetsdo not go over the break, trumpets do not go higher than middle line B, the snare drum part is sprinkled with basicrudiments such as flams and paradiddles. Even the horn gets a crack at the tune! Every part is fun, interesting andeducational.
