Ciacona (original key of F minor for organ) has been beautifully arranged for Tuba/Euphonium Quartet in G minor by Mark LaFratta. It is likely Pachelbel’s second most famous work, after the Kanon in D. As is typical for a Ciacona (Chaconne), there is a short simple tune in triple meter over a repeating bass ostinato that provides a vehicle for variation, ornamentation, and melodic invention and is somewhat similar to a passacaglia. There is a passage or two that even have hints of Bach's great Passacaglia, which didn't appear for many years in the future.
Pachelbel's Ciacona states an opening theme followed by 22 variations, the last of which is an almost exact repeat of the opening theme.
This fantastic 8-minute arrangement is appropriate for advanced performers and is scored for 2 Euphoniums and 2 Tubas.

Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. The main theme is inspired by the introduction of the piece. Delicate and child-like. The ostinato in the beginning of the piece that double reeds have displays the feeling of a “child-like†waltz. The pattern is in 3 but it should be played as if it is in 6/8, with emphasis on beats 1 and 3. There should be weight to the sound but it should not be heavy. Sometimes in life, (as both teens and adults) we tend to get caught up in stress or worries and we forget to take a break, relax and destress a little. This piece reminds us to go back to our childlike roots. As the theme in Section A expands, it takes a turn in Section B where the tempo picks up. (Players are encouraged to have as much fun as they can with this part.) At and after the exposed bassoon part at m.50, in the words of my old high school band director, “Let it rip potato chip!†(Meaning give it all you’ve got and have fun). Brass are encouraged to play the dynamics as written in this section but listen to each other. Section C is a bridge to the 7/8 in Section D. Section D, reintroduces the theme in the form of a trumpet solo while brass and some of the woodwinds have the ostinato. Be careful euphonium & tuba because you’re missing a beat on purpose! Section E is the “Medley†of all the parts that were previously played with only tuba playing in the relative minor so it sticks out at the bottom of the ensemble. This is symbolic of the piece itself, showing that the pressures of life can be overcome by keeping a good attitude and persevering through those tough times that you encounter. Section F is another “bridge†beginning with the flute solo reiterating the theme one last time before the “descent and climb†(starting at m.137) to the final destination: Section G. Section G should be played like an overture. Full and with joy and a “coming alive-ness†to it therefore bringing life to the once dead emotions that once were. The ending with the oboe/bassoon duet should be played as quietly as possible & as in tune as possible.

This particular arrangement for brass quintet features the french horn. The luxurious and soaring sounds of the horn give a new spirit to the sweet melody of this tune, whilst the rest of the ensemble (trumpets, trombone, and tuba) provide a light version of the original piano accompaniment. Elgar wrote this work as an engagement present for his wife, Caroline Alice, and dedicates it à Carice- a combination of her names. It was originally titled Liebesgruss, or Love's Greeting and later revised to Salut d'Amour post publication. This simple arrangement is an excellent embodiment of the tender and loving inspiration presented in its original version.

This second collection contains my all-time favorites and is written for early-mid-intermediate players. The hymns are written so that instruments can be mixed and matched for duet or ensemble purposes. Suitable for worship services, they can be played as offertories or special music selections, or as accompaniment to congregational singing. Many of the hymns are in the traditional hymnal keys, however, there are some that may be slightly lower to accommodate instrumental ranges. This tuba book contains only the melody of these hymns. One verse and chorus is written for each and can be repeated as needed. Hymns with a particular theme or key can be combined for a medley, e.g. I Love to Tell the Story, Oh How I Love Jesus, and He Keeps Me Singing-all are in A-flat. Melody and duet parts are available for flute/oboe, clarinet/trumpet, alto sax, French horn, and trombone/baritone/bassoon. When necessary, parts occasionally cross for ease of playing for the bass instruments. A piano accompaniment book is also available.
