To You for Baritone, Tenor Saxophone and piano is dedicated to the American Baritone Kurt Ollmann, who has done much for the promotion and performance of American music both in the United States and abroad.Whitman’s poem speaks of seeing a stranger and feeling love for this person. In contrast to Poe’s To Helen, which treats a similar subject of a chance meeting of a stranger that the poet loves, Whitman does not idealize his subject but rather pointedly and brutally describes how he sees this person and what feelings (both negative and positive) this contemplation provokes in the poet’s mind In order to reflect this musically, there is an alternation between more introspective and brooding sections which are then followed by more ecstatic outbursts. The piece ends with the poet watching the stranger leave, expressing what the composer felt to be acceptance and release.As in any chamber music with voice, it is important that the two instruments allow the voice to predominate, regardless of the dynamics marked in their parts. The saxophonist should try as much as possible to match colour with the voice,in order to allow the contrapuntal exchanges between the voice and the saxophone to blend evenly. Score and parts. 29 pages. Blaze Scheuerman #651902. Published by Blaze Scheuerman (A0.1047344). First love is inspired by my experience with the first partner I ever loved. It is also slightly inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s fugues from the Well Tempered Clavier and Muse’s song “Butterflies and Hurricanes†from the album “Absolutionâ€. It is meant to show the ups and downs of the relationship, especially how the more developed it got the more problems arose. It starts with a cloud-like scene meant to depict mild attraction. It then develops into infatuation in measure 21 as the main character gets to enjoy his experiences with his partner. It lasts for a little while as he finds newer and newer aspects of his partner that he enjoys. He then returns to a moment of stability with the restatement of the opening theme, and then tries again to get back into those moments of bliss. But this time something goes wrong. The character doesn’t quite realize it until it is too late, but a rift appears in the relationship. This is shown in the D Minor section, as the main character is sad and longing for things to go back to how they were, but is just stuck. After a while of trying different things, a settlement is reached and the two get closer again in the relationship, seen in measure 174. Except this time things are different, they are close to the bond shown earlier, except not quite there. This can be seen with the rearrangement of voices in regards to the melody, such as the cello having the melody except the violin in measure 190. Although the two try their best, the relationship once again reaches a rift between the two, seen with the reemergence of the D Minor section. They try once again to patch things up, but end up becoming unsuccessful and breaking apart. The final sections starting at measure 246 depict the sadness and anger that follow, before eventually reaching a resolution back into the home key of F Major.

This wind quintet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's counter-melodies and intricate wind writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with oboe and flute taking turns to play the top line. In verse 2, the French horn presents the tune in a lower register while the bassoon plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The flute,oboe, and clarinet weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns to the flute and oboe with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

A tribute to the hugely popular and perennial holiday favourite The Nutcracker, this arrangement of The Waltz of the Flowers for string trio (vln/vla/vc) comes with optional 2nd violin to replace the viola part. Slightly abridged to last a comfortable 5 minutes, this would make a great opener or encore for a Christmas concert. Written with interest in all three parts, and taking turns with melody and accompaniment, this is a very enjoyable arrangement for most ensembles of intermediate/advanced ability. If you have a great viola player s/he will love this! (If you have a less great viola/2nd violin player there is also a slightly easier ossia part for the position-shifting middle section…)Note from the arranger: All my arrangements for strings are conceived specifically with the aim of writing interesting parts for all players. All parts contain double-stopping and in the main do not go beyond 4th position (with the exception of a few harmonics), making them suitable for student and mixed ability groups. English.Sea Songs, commissioned jointly by Ars Nova Copenhagen and Glasgow Concert Halls, is a kind of sequel to Martland's Street Songs (originally written for the Kings Singers and Evelyn Glennie). As with the earlier piece, Martland made use of to the library of the English Folk Song and Dance Society at Cecil Sharp House in north London. I wanted specifically to find texts that were not just the usual nautical heave-ho sort of thing, but instead explored the dangers and hardships still being experienced by sailors as recently as the early 19th century. I was also very happy to see in these texts the sense of camaraderie and mutual support that existed between the sailors. (Steve Martland) Dance to your Daddy sets the scene of a sailor's wife at home, dandling her baby son and singing to him about his daddy away fishing, and about the future. Both the tune and the words come from the Northumberland area around Newcastle. This song is very well known in the UK and gave the title to a famous television series When the boat comes in. Fire Down Below is about the effects of fire - a constant danger on board wooden ships. At the end of this song the words take on an extended meaning: Fire in our hearts for the friends that we love. The Dead Horse is about the initial month of work without pay in which all seamen had to take part. They referred to it as the dead horse - hence the expression to flog a dead horse when something is a waste of time. The seamen resented this unpaid time, and the text expresses their frustrations metaphorically by listing what they would do to the horse! The music's frantic gallop alludes to the horse's desperation. Although The Sea Martyrs presents itself as a ballad, this text has a more literary feel, and unlike the other songs it doesn't include a chorus refrain. It concerns the sailors' lack of pay, the consequences of asking for pay (being hanged!), and the poverty of their families at home. The poem portrays the sailors' deaths as an almost religious sacrifice to help future seamen. At the end of the work, the opening of Dance to your Daddy returns as a kind of descant, sung by an angel calling to the hanged men. © Paul Hillier, 2012.

I’ve included less essential, but potentially desirable additional voices/passages in cue-size noteheads so that pianists can easily see them, but know that they are not necessary in a sink or swim accompanying situation. Presenting less essential material in cue-size noteheads also reduces visual clutter on the page.3. In addition to the composer’s markings, when needed, I have included hints on particular notes to bring out when the singer is likely to need them as a pitch anchor or when it is not obvious which line should be brought out within the texture.4. All page turns have been carefully selected so as to result in the least possible disruption to the pianist when possible. When an inevitable page turn precedes a potentially surprising note or chord, I’ve included the next downbeat’s notes in cue-size stemless noteheads at the end of the preceding measure.5.
