The work was written in response to the wartime events of our time, and juxtaposes vocal movements based upon Latin prayers with purely orchestral sections (meditations on wartime subjects). The Latin prayers in this work consist of the Agnus Dei from the Roman Catholic Mass, a prayer which asks God for forgiveness of the 'sins of the world,' and two hymns to the Virgin Mary: Ave Maria and Ave Maris Stella. The concept of the Blessed Mother as the spiritual mother of all humanity is a powerful one which I believe touches us on a deep level. As children, our mothers give us guidance, tenderness, unconditional love and protection in a world where evil exists. In our time, horrific wartime events daily take their toll on innocent civilians, while motherhood is revered in all cultures. In contrast to my very popular Two Meditations, which were in ancient modes, these use 20thC techniques. Woodland was inspired by a notated motif and mysterious elements found in a tapestry by Libby Morton-Gibson and by the quartal-based Haru No Umi or The Sea in Spring by Michio Miyagi. After I play a game with the scale, every phrase delineates a four-note quartal: classical progressions including a circle of fifths are cunningly concealed within. The rhythms are unpredictable. Use your imagination. The scale game returns in retrograde at the end. Will- o'-the- Wisp is the eerie and elusive flame sometimes formed over marshes. The term is also used to mean an unobtainable wish. I use my octatonic scale.

Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977026). This piece was composed for percussionist Kevin Romanski, who also provided advice on some technical matters. The title refers to its initial inspiration: the contemplation of different color combinations of the notes in a C13 chord. In terms of character, it begins with a slow meditative repetition of two melodic ideas. One is played as single-handed rolls by the right-hand while the other is a slowly developing melody played by the left-hand. Because the phrases of these two ideas do not align, their interaction creates a kaleidoscopic shifting of harmonic colors. A faster middle section continues developing both the harmonic and rhythmic interaction between the two hands, but in a more active and syncopated way. After a series of dramatic outbursts, the original meditative quality returns and the piece ends quietly with a return of material from the first section.
