Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908), undoubtedly, is one of the most important and most successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century and has become immortal through his virtuoso and highly expressive bravura pieces in the world of violin playing. His concert programme mostly consisted of his own compositions, even if quite a few works had been dedicated to him by fellow composers and tailor-made for him: for example, 'Symphonie espagnole' by Lalo, 'Scottish Fantasia' by Bruch and violin works by Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski. Apart from works of his own, Sarasate also arranged other works for his own use, such as the two 'Nocturnes' by Frédéric Chopin. To pianists, it may seem like sacrilege to arrange such masterpieces but Sarasate wanted to subscribe some of the most beautiful and most tender melodies to the violin which he saw primarily as a vocal instrument. Or he might have regretted that Chopin had not written any original work for violin and piano – but here's Sarasate's arrangement to make up for this lack.

Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742468). The Consolations are a set of six solo piano works by Franz Liszt. The compositions take the musical style of Nocturnes with each having its own distinctive style. Each Consolation is composed in either the key of E major or D-flat major. E major is a key regularly used by Liszt for religious themes. There exist two versions of the Consolations. The first (S.171a) was composed by Liszt between 1844 and 1849 and published in 1992 by G. Henle Verlag. The second (S.172) was composed between 1849 and 1850 and published in 1850 by Breitkopf & Härtel, containing the familiar Consolation No. 3, Lento placido, in D-flat Major. The third Consolation is in D-flat major and initially marked as Lento placido. It is the most popular of the Consolations and also a favorite encore piece. Its style is similar to the Chopin Nocturnes, in particular, it seems to have been inspired by Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 27 No. 2. The similarity between the two works has been interpreted as a tribute to Chopin who died in 1849, a year before the Consolations were published. This third Consolation is however one of several of Liszt's works that take a style reminiscent of Chopin; some examples include Liszt's Polonaises, Berceuse, Mazurka brillante, and his Ballades. In 1883, years after composing the Consolation, Liszt received a Grand piano from the Steinway Company with a design that included a sostenuto pedal. Liszt began transcribing this Consolation for the new sostenuto pedal and in a letter to Steinway he wrote: In relation to the use of your welcome tone-sustaining pedal I inclose two examples: Danse des Sylphes, by Berlioz, and No. 3 of my Consolations. I have today noted down only the introductory bars of both pieces, with this proviso, that, if you desire it, I shall gladly complete the whole transcription, with exact adaptation of your tone-sustaining pedal. Liszt recommended sparing usage of the sostenuto pedal in the interpretation of this Consolation and opined on the positive effect it would have on the more tranquil passages. This allows you to expand your repertoire for any occasion. The title describes the pieces as very condensed musical ideas, or impressions. They can be musically unfolded and further developed. Expanded interpretations are also conceivable, both in terms of playing and instrumentation. Nocturne The piece is technically inspired by Frederic Chopin's Trois Nocturnes Op. 9 No. 2 in E flat major. Coloraturas are to be added independently by the performer in order to emphasize this character. In addition, the mood is blended with the tragic romanticism of Edward Elgar's Salut d'Amour op. 12.ExpressionThe two different parts at the beginning are later combined in a third Espressivo part, which is based on Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, 2nd movement and picks up on its tender and intense mood.Sonata No. 2The variations are partly inspired by the A major Sonata K331 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, while the trio was influenced by the mood of the Träumerei from Kinderszenen op. 15 by Robert Schumann.AnthemThe anthem refers to the movie Avengers: Endgame. The theme from The real Hero is basically recognizable in a modified form and tries to capture the unique emotional state of this film music of sadness, pride and honour.SerenadeFrom bar 5, the initially accompanying theme is joined by a second, which reinterprets Franz Schubert's Serenade No. 4, D957 and develops independently as it progresses. The themes merge from bar 55 and fully develop the melancholy character of the piece.
