The bass line is supplied in both treble and bass clefs, and the two parts are identical, so for a large ensemble, you can have one or the other or both in your performance.Everything is comfortable to play, and my transcription is based closely on the official video from Chicago. I have changed the key very slightly so that the deep bass notes fit on the guitar’s bottom strings and the tune is placed comfortably on the neck. There are no page turns in the part score.The music rises and falls as the song progresses, making the dynamics happen almost automatically. But there are plenty of opportunities in the phrasing to make this piece  absolutely magical.The breathtaking key-change of the original is included!I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Despite its traditional sound, it was written surprisingly recently - in 1945.The music and words of the song are both by Ge Xin Chen - also described as Chen Gexin - and written under the pen name Qing Yu.My trio arrangement is for novices and those with limited playing experience - the three lines very from almost beginner round to early intermediate. In a large ensemble, the Guitar 2 part can be split between players to make an even easier arrangement.I have arranged more than one verse - each has a slightly different texture - and in between verses there is a little separating section which includes straightforward but effective percussion effects.This piece is especially effective when played near the bridge and bending some of the longer notes to one side.I hope you enjoy this piece!

This is a three movement pantonal work for unaccompanied solo violin. Each movement has it's own personality and character. The first begins freely and expressively in the beginning and builds momentum to a somewhat sporadic series of various motivic manipulations, ending in an aggressive, accelerating repetition of the motif, which can be heard in various places of the following two movements. The second movement, somewhat more quirky, is meant to provoke a sense of temporary confusion and disorientation. The pizzicato open G in the first few measures is the disorienting element, interrupting the melody every few beats. The rest of the piece gradually becomes more and more playful before slowing down as if unsure what lies ahead.The third movement is the shortest of the three. It begins very eerily and slightly chilling with a downward glissando on artificial and natural harmonics. It almost seems as if a character in a story is lost in an unfamiliar place, trying to find the way home. As the movement progresses, it builds in expression and intensity the way a light in the distance becomes closer as one walks closer to it. From this climax, to the end, it becomes gradually softer and slower, mimicking the burning embers of a dying fire, reminiscing of warmth and comfort.

This fine work has sat dormant for many years and has now come to light thanks to the efforts of Charlie Vernon, Bass Trombonist of the Chicago Symphony, who performed this virtuoso work as a young performer. The concerto is in the standard three movement form: Fast, slow, fast. This publication is a reduction from the original orchestral version (to be released at some point in the future). Here is a description of the Concerto by the composer, John W. Ware. I started on the trombone concerto in my junior year studying composition at Indiana University. While working on it, I learned of an opportunity to make it sort of a thesis piece (though students didn't write a thesis in composition while an undergrad). The original version was for trombone with string orchestra, and it was performed by the IU String Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Arthur Corra, with Robert Priez, trombone, as part of my senior composition recital. I thought the performance was quite good (Priez played extraordinarily well), and the piece received a newspaper review in the Indiana Daily Student, in which the reviewer wrote that the work was almost too exciting. I thought at the time that he had given me and my music a fine compliment. I made a piano version of the accompaniment, shortening and tightening the first movement, for performances in 1966; I made a second revision in 1967 for a performance by E. J. Eaton, trombonist at the University of Tennessee at Martin, arriving at the form in which the work exists now. The first movement is in fairly normal sonata-allegro form, in the key of A minor. It alternates between assertive and more thoughtful moods. There is no introduction; the soloist enters immediately and dominates much of the movement. The main theme is--by some manipulation--a source for most of the other themes, and all of the themes are used in close proximity to each other, including contrapuntal combinations, especially near the end. Originally the movement included a lengthy fugato, now much shortened and including a stretto that builds and subsides before a cadenza leading to a coda based on both the principal and secondary themes. Key relations in this movement, as in the other two, are quite free and often chromatic, with frequent third-relations; but returns to the tonic at the end are emphatic. The writing is challenging for both soloist and accompanist; the piece is substantial, requiring technique and stamina. The second movement is in F minor and is also built on both contrast and close relationships between the main and secondary themes. The main theme is heard in the piano part before the soloist enters. The mood is more lyric than in the first movement, but with dramatic episodes also. In this movement are some definite derivations from themes in the first movement. The ending is a sort of lengthened shadow of the opening. The finale returns to A minor, with themes slightly related to polonaise rhythms, but with strong echoes of first-movement themes. Here, too, dramatic and lyric episodes alternate, with dotted rhythms frequently propelling the music forward. The introduction is a brief and simple preparation for the solo entry. Later in the movement, a very brief, slightly slower section is soon overtaken by the original tempo. Toward the end, there is a second cadenza, again leading to a swift and energetic coda. The work is about 20 minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Published by Frederick Naftel (A0.987079). My 2nd String Quartet was composed during the current Coronavirus pandemic and its style is definitely affected by this period. I would describe the music as a strong statement of mind. In complete contrast to my relatively straightforward 1st Quartet, which is in 4 movements, the present work is in one uninterrupted movement, divided into five parts, with an epilogue. The intervals of the major 7th and minor 2nd are a strong feature of the music, which contrasts intensely static passages, which are nevertheless uneasily tranquil, with furious and violent sections, often marked triple forte in certain passages. The opening Lento flows serenely but mysteriously as if awaiting some kind of resolution, using motifs rather than fully-fledged themes(of which there are very few). The viola makes an urgent and violent protest, later to be imitated by cello, as if to disrupt the serenity, until the second section bursts in with barely-controlled energy and fury. This Allegro feroce is strongly accented and relentless in its forward momentum, the tension manintained almost throughout until the music suddenly quietens down, pizzicato passages leading to the next section. The Adagio Sostenuto initially resembles plainsong, all four instruments in unison(muted) playing a smooth line which rises and falls, the dynamics remaining pp and senza vibrato. The line breaks into harmony based on the interval of a perfect 5th, eventually leading to a passage reminiscent of the very opening of the work. A brief crescendo leads to another quiet unison passage which becomes more fragmented and unsettled, first and second violins announcing an aggressive idea which becomes the initial impetus for the fourth section. This Presto Furioso is even more violently energetic than the second section and at one point, alternates between 3/8 and 4/8, making the music sound even more unsettled. This is music with a strong sense of purpose as well as absolute fury. After a very short scalic passage, the final section begins Grave and pp with a sustained unison C, growing in power with exaggerated vibrato to a series of crunching discords and a wildly disconcerting episode featuring swirling upper strings and impassioned cello solo. The music dies away to the Epilogue. The concluding part of the work calls for a recorded cello playing a pizzicato pedal, over which violins and viola play a series of overlapping (tonal) triads, giving the music a slightly warmer but still mysterious sound. The recorded cello’s pedal notes slow down until a final powerful discord from the 4 instruments dies away, leaving the sighing motif of the very opening of the work to have the last word. I have made a lot of use of rhythmic features in this movement. After the Maestoso, the 12/8 section is in the nature of a jig, with lots of repeated pitches and very rhythmical There's much use of syncopation. After I have played around with these ideas (intervals based on the opening) there is a more legato tune, also based on the opening music, but in a grander style and marked nobilmente. This is almost a processional, and leads to a reprise of the jig motifs in a new mode and with modifications to the rhythm. The second movement of this sonata is a set of 3 variations on an original tune. The melody is quite hymn-like and needs to be played as such. Very legato, with very slight tongue. Variation 1 is an 8th note variation, with a slight increase in tempo to help it to flow. The player will need to pay close attention to the written phrasing so as not to lose the theme. This variation is p throughout. Variation 2 is a triplet/sextuplet variation, again with a slight increase in tempo. This variation has turns, which I have written out in ossias above to be clear how I would like it to be played. Variation 3 is a semiquaver and glissando variation, requiring good tongue technique and clear phrasing. Breathing should be easy as I have made provision for breaths to mark the ends of phrases. Please don't change these! Finally, there is a restatement of the original theme with slight adaptations to bring the movement to a quiet finish. The third and final movement of the sonata is a rondo. The opening music keeps returning throughout the length of the movement. It comprises a stuttering rhythmic phrase with alternating upwards and downwards scales which gradually build up throughout the opening of the movement. Each time the ritornello idea returns it has been altered in some way. Between the ritornelli are slightly less frenetic sections of cantabile melodic ideas which hark back to both the first and second movements as well as referencing the scalic ideas from the third movement. Although the music is fast, it should be playable without resorting to triple tonguing.

Niels-Ole Bo Johansen has recently discovered a hidden treasure of relatively unknown and forgotten works of Danish origin for the Trombone from the early 20th Century. This series of music will be subtitled The Danish Trombone Heritage and will be published by Cherry Classics over the next while. Below is Niels' description of Romance, Op. 13 by Joachim Bruun de Neergaard composed in 1915.Anton Hansen's (father of the Danish School for Trombone) first meeting with Joachim Bruun de Neergaard (1877-1929) was rather a disastrous one. Hansen an extraordinary Trombonist, also a very fine pianist, was hired to play at a dinner dance at Skjoldnæsholm manor. A young man insisted on playing along with the tunes Hansen performed - on a terribly out -of-tune ocarina. Hansen writes in his memoirs that his first thought was that the young man was slightly retarded. As it turned out, he was the son of the family living in the manor, which made the situation even more awkward. That young man, Joachim Bruun de Neergaard was not the slightest bit retarded. He was on the contrary highly intelligent and managed, in addition to his composition studies, to attain a degree in law with the highest honors.The Romance for Trombone and Orchestra, here in the version for Trombone and Piano, reveals a composer with a very fine sense of the trombone’s singing qualities.This work is perfect for advanced intermediate performers and is almost 7 minutes in length.Trombone soloist Johansen and his collaborator, Pianist Erik Kaltoft beautiifully perform Romance on their 2018 album The French Connection. It is an epic story in seven movements where we follow the bassoon from darkness to light. It is a life-quest journey which is an expression of personal experiences. The movements are: Searching, On The Move, Resting, A New Dawn, Entering The Light, At A Crossroad and On The Foot-path To Happiness. The concerto wanders through a wide variety of experiences and feelings. The main character, represented by the bassoon, starts in a depressed state of darkness, where very encounter with anything even remotely light or beautiful almost increases the feeling of despair (Searching). Then, a spark of anger is born which takes us on to the second movement (On The Move). This feeling takes the character forward, and out or depressive numbness. In the third movement (Resting) the character can finally rest, but still with an underlying feeling of sadness and loneliness, and it is not until the fourth movement (A New Dawn) that the bassoon starts to live a little, which leads into a more peaceful experience (Entering The Light). After that the character needs to ponder over where to go next (At A Crossroad), and finally in the seventh slightly mad movement (On The Footpath To Happiness), the character can live to the full, finding his way in this ever changing world.

(included on Grade 7 ABRSM exams from 2022 onwards).Changing Landscapes (movement 2) propels us forward through twists and turns, almost as if the thoughts are in equal turmoil as the scenery that rushes by. By the end of the movement however, it's very much like these have been resolved, and a peace and newly found optimism is evident in the final movement. Songs of the Warrior, a Brass Quintet in three movements, utilizes thematic material derived from a twelve-tone row, presented in three contrasting styles. While the piece stands on its own as absolute music following traditional formal structures, the titles of each movement do suggest a setting befitting the mood or atmosphere evoked by the music. I. The Cannon’s Mouth Following a slightly modified version of the classical sonata allegro form, this movement presents the thematic material in a freely atonal setting, Much use is made of variations of ancient two note war-horn calls, which would command soldiers to advance into direct combat with an enemy. II. Amidst the Fallen The second movement evokes images of the aftermath of battle and the horrors left on the field of war. Dynamic and rhythmic elements in the music produce a classic arch form. Melodic and harmonic structures are developed throughout the movement. III. Revelry A complete departure in style from the previous movements, Revelry features upbeat modal harmony and foot-tapping rhythms. Thematic material borrowed from the earlier movements is transformed to conform to the desired atmosphere. The form of the movement is best described as a hybrid rondo and variations. The light-hearted mood is perhaps a reflection of the joy found when a soldier returns to his home. This quintet presents three stylistically distinct movements, yet all are based on the same thematic sources. The first movement is somewhat cerebral and demands much virtuosity from the performers. The second is darker, with some almost lyrical melodic lines. The final movement is nothing if not bombastic. All-in-all, Songs of the Warrior provides a little something for everyone, from Berlioz to Schoenberg, with a little Bernstein on the side.

It was written by the band's guitarist and main songwriter Noel Gallagher. The song was produced by Gallagher and Owen Morris. Released on 19 February 1996 as the fourth single from their second studio album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995), it became Oasis's second single to reach No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, where it also went platinum.[1] It was the first Oasis single with lead vocals by Noel, who had previously only sung lead on B-sides, instead of his brother Liam.
