In my adaptation of a work originally composed in 2002 for eight-voice choir, violin and violoncello, I was particularly interested in recreating the tonal spectrum of the three extended vocalises (sung by the choir) for the piano in my new version for piano trio. While the piano part had to accommodate the entire choral texture, the parts for violin and violoncello remained almost unaltered. This was however not a mere transcription: above all, I significantly expanded the ecstatic climax occurring towards the end of the version for choir, which expresses a vision of dawn breaking and the awakening of nature with its profusion of birdsong. German.In his set of five lieder with finale, Fazıl Say sets a selection of contrasting poems from Goethe’s cycle West-Eastern Divan in which the poet skilfully intertwines the intellectual Western world with oriental mysticism. Say creates passages of aria and recitative, the latter being characterised by the conventional accompaniment almost devoid of rhythm beneath quasi-improvisational vocal style, where the aria sections are passionate and dramatic. Arabic rhythms and melodies dominate the metrically varied structures of bars in multiples of nine which typify Say’s music. In his settings of the texts Say attaches great importance to comprehensibility, writing vocal lines that consist primarily of syllabic steps and intervalic leaps, with extended melismatic sections written as vocalises.

I’ve always been interested in Baba O’Riley; it always felt like a combination of Disney’s Electric Light Parade, minimalism, and rock. Take what you want (as to the story) behind this piece - you cannot deny that the title refers to Maher Baba and Terry O’Riley - a combination of Indian spiritualism and musical minimalism. The main melody is there. The voices bounce around with short vocalises/ostinatos to simulate a synth. The piano also becomes integral to the iconic chord progression.
