It was requested that I do a piano solo that had the melody to assist vocalists (kind of a piano accomaniment to a vocalist). I also wanted it to be a stand alone piano solo. I arranged this for the quartet’s ‘snowy season’ of events, and for my daughter who sings. You can hear our recording of the whole song on my channel if you type in Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, ‘All I want for Christmas’ into Youtube. I would say that the syncopation probably calls for advanced string players as it is vital to keep the timing steady if the singer is to survive such a big sing with so few opportunities to breathe! However, there must be many vocalists who would love to try this as a party piece for a christmas concert. I am thinking of sixth formers or performing arts college students, or professional players for christmas event and weddings. If you have a good local singer, it could work with a string orchestra too. The triplets need to be very light and passed effortlessly between the players so that the texture is thin but rhythmically vibrant. Cellists can simplify bar 74 by playing just the notes on each beat as crotchets. The opening will need a lot of rehearsal as the quartet /orchestra need to know what the singer will do. I have put some of the lyrics into the score to help with this. I hope you enjoy performing this as much as we did! I am transcribing it for quartet without a vocalist too which could easily then be tackled by string players of Grade 5 ABRSM. Watch this space!

First released in 1994, and featured in the film Batman Forever, this song was a no.1 hit in the US and Australia.This arrangement features the trombone as the main soloist, with some wonderful moments for showcasing the rich, vocalistic tone of the instrument. The French horn also has some 'pearly' moments, starting with the opening introduction soaring high in the register. The trumpets also enjoy the melody during the chorus which features them playing together in octaves. Some moments in the trombone and horn part may be a little high for some players, but these will work just as well taken down an octave where necessary.This is a terrific song, with rich harmonies and lots of melodic interest. Yet, this whole idea of music of the night did not originate with him, but with John Field. Clementi's sorely-tried apprentice and protege', and a confirmed alcoholic, moved from London and Clementi's captivity to spend his adulthood, short as it was, in Moscow, of all places. It was there he began to write his long series of romantic, ( small R? ) pieces, with simple vocalistic melodies, over an arpeggiated left-hand bass. This piece marks the beginning of the genre, and, as such, warrants the attention of everyone who admires Chopin's works. Our setting here uses chord symbols for every LH arpeggio, so that the player can get used to harmonic identification as the primary means of seeing and hearing the LH. All the ornamentation is written out, for stylistic clarity. As with so much classical music, a slow pace brings out lingering subtleties, while a faster one can create movement and excitement, if one has the technique! MBB .
