This song was commissioned to celebrate 162 years of ministry of Our Savior's Lutheran Church (OSLC) in Milwaukee, WI. The final service will is/was on Sunday, July 26, 2020. Although the physical doors will close, the community will continue as will the many ministries begotten here such as The Next Door Foundation, and others. OSLC was my home church for many years, and I was one of the ministers of music there for some time. I played for funerals, baptisms and weddings there. I raised my children there. It was a place where memories of pain and joy embrace. I hope that this song recognizes the pain of the closing, but celebrates the years of vibrant ministry, and leaves us with a sense of hope. God does not dwell in temples but in hearts filled with Agape love. The song can also be used during the pandemic as we strive to be a church in spirit without walls. As in many private schools, we adhere to a high expectation of both faculty and students, as we all work together to serve Christ in all that we do. It has become a home away from home for me, and I will forever be grateful for this institution that God has placed in my life, as a teacher today, as well as throughout my childhood, as I was a student here from preschool to high school graduation. When I was a student, and especially today from a teacher's perspective, I've witnessed that students seem to get frustrated with the rules when it comes to the dress code. The students are required to order uniforms from the Land's End catalogue, with polos and dress shirts in colors of green, yellow, or blue, along with the appropriate pants or skirts of white, black, or blue khaki. Modesty and professionalism is the standard as we seek to glorify God, even in the dress we choose. It's easy to get frustrated with rules anywhere you go. However, the goal of having rules is to put in place a line that we can all meet at according to the type of experience we are engaging in, or institution we are part of. This song encourages our students, or anyone frustrated with rules in any institution, to look past the rules themselves and focus on why you are here, and the overall purpose of what you are doing with others that are trying to do the same.Hopefully, this song will encourage you in your journey!

La presente publicación de la tanda de valses «Pita», del reconocido compositor dominicano José De Jesús Ravelo, se basa en la primera edición de la obra realizada en 1897 con el estampado musical diseñado en Leipzig por C. G. Röder. Esta colección de valses está dedicada a la entonces enamorada del compositor, la Srta. Josefa de la Fuente, conocida como “Pepita”, con quien contraería matrimonio en 1902. Además, está documentada la intención del compositor de recaudar fondos con la edición de esta obra y destinarlos al proyecto del Parque Independencia en Santo Domingo. De ahí la inscripción «mi ofrenda al Parque ‘Independencia’» en la portada, la cual hemos decidido recrear como homenaje, incluyendo también una reinterpretación de la ilustración original alegórica a la independencia dominicana. Por lo tanto, además de ser una de las primeras ediciones impresas conocidas de música dominicana, la tanda de valses «Pita» se circunscribe también a la historia del desarrollo y expansión de nuestra ciudad capital, ligada al proceso de construcción de uno de sus puntos de referencia más importantes. G. Röder. This collection of waltzes is dedicated to the composer’s then fiancée, Miss Josefa de la Fuente, known as “Pepita”, whom he would marry in 1902. In addition, it is documented the composer’s intention to raise funds with the edition of this work and allocate them to the project of the Independencia Park in Santo Domingo. Hence the inscription “mi ofrenda al Parque ‘Independencia’” on the cover, which we have decided to recreate as a tribute, also including a reinterpretation of the original illustration allegorical to the Dominican independence. Therefore, in addition to being one of the first known printed editions of Dominican music, the “Pita” waltz suite is also circumscribed to the history of the development and expansion of our capital city, linked to the process of construction of one of its most important landmarks. We are grateful for the initiative of the Fundación Copistas Acuario for reissuing this work as a result of its continuous work to rescue the national musical heritage. Imagine a place where cultures are blended and people of all races can laugh, play, sing, dance, and even pray together.  Colores is a musical tale in which children show us how to create such a place.A child walks on to a deserted playground, looking for others.  Another child joins.  They introduce themselves and begin to talk to each other.  A third joins the conversation, then another, and another, until there is a large group of children, creating a colorful, contrapuntal cacophony of vocal chatter.  After the introductions and lively conversations, they pause to decide what to do next.  As would be expected, they decide to just play.  They run races, play chase and tag, catch and kickball, and laugh and giggle until their energy is gone.  Settling down, and wondering what to do next, one child begins singing a tune that is familiar.  …but not to all of them.  So, it’s time to teach the song to everyone.The tune is shared, bit by bit, and one by one every child learns it and joins in.  Before it’s over, their full-voiced singing creates a choral tapestry in which every child adds his or her own color to the musical palette.After a brief conversation, they add their renewed energy to the song they just learned, pick up the pace, and dance.  They twist and spin, jump and swing, making up their moves as they go along.  But, as before, their energy wanes.  This time, as they settle down, one child feels so comfortable with these new friends, he chooses to share his faith in the form of a chant — a prayer.Some join his prayer, as others add a familiar religious tune.  They pray and sing, and their separate experiences combine to produce a stirring, blended chorale.  As they finish, the day ends and they quickly reminisce about the blended experiences that are now behind them.  Before they go their separate ways, they share a moment of gratitude for the place where they can be free to be who they are, together.On a musical note, Colores combines multiple scale structures and varying types of vertical harmonies to give the piece its color palette.  Each of the five voices is set in a different mode, with different tonal centers and sets of accidentals.  The harmony combines both traditional tertian chords with secondal, quartal, and quintal structures.The colors within the music are intended to represent the racial diversity of the borderland from which the composer drew his inspiration.  It is hoped that we can learn from the example of children who talk, laugh, play, sing, dance, and pray together.  …who are grateful for the time and experiences they share.

La Sonate n° 6 Kharkiv pour guitare solo a été composée en 2021, à la fin du confinement lié au COVID-19. Ã? ce moment-là , ma famille et moi étions restés dans notre ville natale de Kharkiv (également connue sous le nom de Kharkov), en Ukraine, pendant près de deux ans. Nous considérions cette période de pandémie comme un désastre, mais nous avons réalisé plus tard que c'était en fait un moment plutôt heureux, car la guerre est arrivée dans notre pays quelques mois plus tard. Depuis 2022, une fraction considérable des 1,5 million de citoyens de Kharkiv ont quitté leur foyer, ceux qui sont restés vivent sous des attaques incessantes de missiles, et beaucoup ont été tués. Je voudrais dédier cette Sonate à la ville frontalière de Kharkiv et, surtout, à ses citoyens souffrant de la guerre.Pourtant, la musique de la Sonate n'a aucun programme spécifique. Ici, je donnerai un bref aperçu de ses principaux éléments de composition pour faciliter les interprétations futures.Les premier et quatrième mouvements de cette Sonate sont basés sur l'interaction entre le principe dodécaphonique et le centre tonal de sol majeur, naturel pour la guitare. En particulier, le premier mouvement est basé sur l'interaction de la triade de sol majeur Solâ??Siâ??Ré des cordes de guitare à vide 2â??3â??4, le motif ascendant 1 impliquant les notes Miâ??Fa#â??Laâ??Do# (à l'origine sur la première corde), et le motif descendant 2 utilisant les notes Miâ??Doâ??Sibâ??La (à l'origine sur la corde de basse 6). Ces éléments se complètent presque pour former douze tons (à l'exception du Fa manquant), et les motifs alternent avec des fragments ostinato où chaque note de la triade de sol majeur est déplacée pas à pas d'un demi-ton vers le haut ou vers le bas.Le deuxième mouvement est un Scherzo impliquant de nombreux demi-tons dans des accords accentués et des passages rapides, ainsi qu'un mouvement mélodique chromatique dans la voix de basse. At that time my family and I were staying in our home city of Kharkiv (also known as Kharkov), Ukraine for almost two years. We considered that pandemic period as a disaster, but later have realized that it actually was a rather happy time, because a war came to our homeland just a few months later. Since 2022 a considerable fraction of the 1.5 millions of Kharkiv citizens have left their homes, those who stayed have been living under ceaseless missile attacks, and many have been killed. I would like to dedicate this Sonata to the frontier city of Kharkiv and, most of all, to its citizens suffering from the war.Yet, the music of the Sonata does not have any specific program. Here I will give a brief overview of its main composition elements to facilitate future interpretations.The first and fourth movements of this Sonata are based on the interplay between the twelve-tone principle and the G-major tonal center, natural for the guitar. Namely, the first movement is based on the interaction of the G-major triad Gâ??Bâ??D of the open guitar strings 2â??3â??4, ascending motif 1 involving the notes Eâ??F#â??Aâ??C# (originally on the first string), and descending motif 2 using the notes E-â??Câ??Bbâ??A- (originally, on the bass string 6). These elements supplement each other to almost make up twelve tones (apart from the missing F), and the motifs alternate with ostinato fragments where each note in the G major triad is step-by-step moved by a semitone up or down.The second movement is a Scherzo involving numerous semitones in accented chords and fast passages, as well as chromatic melodic motion in the bass voice. It is almost atonal in some fragments, but has an overall tonal center of A-minor.The third movement is a meditative Adagio based on a theme composed within hexatonic scale Dâ??Eâ??Fâ??G#â??Aâ??B and ostinato chords involving open bass strings Eâ??Aâ??D and semitone Bâ??C.Finally, the fourth movement is based on the complete twelve-tone theme consisting of two phrases including motifs 1 and 2 from the first movement: Gâ??Fâ??Bbâ??Abâ??Câ??Ebâ??D and Eâ??Bâ??C#â??Aâ??F#. This theme is presented in its prime and retrograde forms. There are dialogues between the first string, basses and open middle strings, similar to the first movement. In the culmination, the twelve-tone theme is performed using the parallel motion of the standard guitar G-major chord with open middle strings across twelve positions.The Sonata was premiered and recorded (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) by the prominent Ukrainian guitarist Marko Topchii who has also lived and studied in Kharkiv. I am extremely grateful to him for the brilliant performance of this piece.I am greatly indebted to Productions dâ??Oz for keeping my original notations in places where these do not conform to the publisherâ??s style.
