Meredith Willson's one-man masterpiece, The Music Man, features a couple of counterpoint combinations, where one song shares the chord structure with another and can be played/sung together. This is one of them. The Buffalo Bills barbershop quartet (the school board) sings Lida Rose, while Shirley Jones (in the movie) as Marian the Librarian sings Will I Ever Tell You elsewhere in River City. This arrangement is built from a barbershop arrangement found floating on the 'net from a gay men's chorus, with the four higher horns -- two trumpets, horn, trombone -- providing the quartet. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458413). Basin Street sits on the edge of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. Kermit the Frog (his creator, Jim Henson, was behind the curtain) sings this song at the beginning of 1979's The Muppet Movie. It would be nominated for an Oscar for best original song, which subsequent history would indicate it should have won. The honor went to It Goes Like It Goes from the soundtrack of Norma Rae, which hasn't been heard since. The Rainbow Connection, meanwhile, has been covered by just about every singer and group in the universe, just short of the metal rockers. This arrangement is a challenge, although the parts are not technically difficult. I've used stairstep constructions throughout, so a quintet has to be tight and precise to maintain a steady tempo. Sousa wrote this march (based in part on one he had written 18 years earlier) while performing there in 1893. Now it's a New York City neighborhood of the same name. Things dicovered on the way to learning other things: Sousa dedicated Manhattan Beach to the resort's proprietor, entrpreneur/developer Austin ... Corbin (also big in banking and president of the Long Island Rail Road. Apprently no relation to the arranger. Good thing, too; he was a raging anti-Semite (he wouldn't allow Jews at the resort) and was instrumental in cheating the Montauk native American tribe outy of their land.

(Bohemia today is in the Czech Republic.) He based it on an old Ukrainian folk song. It started out in pre-Christian Ukraine as a song to celebrate the new year, which started then with spring in April. With Christianity and the Julian calendar, the new year moved to January, and then its original lyricist -- the song was written for a choir -- added stuff about bells and carols, and it migrated a few days earlier to become a Christmas standard.This arrangement is for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC and tuba. It was first published as part of a book of carols in 1924. From Wikipedia: The song is particularly noted for the Latin refrain: Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis! (Glory! Hosanna in the highest!), where the sung vowel sound o of Gloria is fluidly sustained through a lengthy rising and falling melismatic melodic sequence, extending the word to a 33-syllable-long lyric. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1462720). This is a little ditty that was played aboard the sailing ships of His (or Her) Majesty's Navy by an onboard fiddler or piper. And to it the sailors would dance, in part for the exercise on a long voyage. Samuel Pepys called it The Jig of the Ship. Presumably, a shipboard piper would play it at a comfortable, even slow, tempo, but it's typically performed at breakneck speed. Or you can start slow and accelerate to stupid. I put this arrangement together for our quintet to play at a U.S. Navy ship reunion. It's moderately brisk, right at the lunatic fringe of our capabilities. It's for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC (a trombone would be near impossible) and tuba, and no one escapes unscathed. It's a pain to track down on an English system, and the software didn't produce the umlaut A the way it was supposed to. Use your imagination. If you've ever been to the Munich (Munchen, auch mit umlaut) Oktoberfest, this song is everywhere (as it is with most Oktoberfest celebrations everywhere). But it's always a part of the program at the Munich Hofbrauhaus.The song was written in Berlin in 1935. Wilhelm Wiga Gabriel wrote other songs as well, mostly for the Nazis. So he's pretty much written out of history and the rest of his work appropriately relegated to the dustbin of the ages.

Really. I couldn't make that up. The Thunderer was said to be Sousa's wife's favorite march. It's not known who the thunderer was. Maybe she thought it was her husband. Many thank to the U.S. Marine Corps Band, whose fine Sousa transcriptions make these arrangements a little easier to pull off.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414088). Yes, the title is the name of the newspaper. Its new owners in 1889 wanted to celebrate with a song, so they hired John Philip Sousa, then director of the U.S. Marine Corps Band (The President's Own) to write one for them. The result was The Washington Post March, which became wildly popular (mostly a dance tune to accompany the two-step) in the U.S. and in Europe. It also led to his coronation as The March King. A British journalist so anointed him on the strength of this march (although the reporter probably made him The American March King, since Kenneth J. Alford (Colonel Bogey, etc.) was already The March King in Great Britain. Washington Post debuted in a ceremony on the grounds of the Smithsonian Institution, with President Benjamin Harrison among the throng of attendees.

But he and the customer couldn't agree on a price -- Sousa wanted $1,500, and the customer wouldn't go higher than $1,000 -- so Sousa walked. A march from the operetta became The Liberty Bell. It's probably best known now as the theme song from Monty Python's Flying Circus, pressed on the British comedy group by its only American member for reasons that are too arcane to go into or even understand.It's arranged for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC and tuba; subsitute instrumentation can be arranged.

And, no, it's not about that peak in Yosemite. El Capitan was a fictional rebel chieftain ordered killed by the fictional viceroy of Peru, who then, in the operetta, impersonated the dead rebel. Frolicking, merriment and romance ensue. Yes, it's that foolish. But it's a great march.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414066). So the legend goes: Edward Eugene Bagley is on a train, touring with his family band from some Vermont backwater, when he composed National Emblem. He didn't like the ending he wrote, so he trashed the score. Someone in his band rescued it from the trash can. The rest of the band repaired to the baggage car (surely beer was involved in this activity) and secretly rehearsed the new march. They performed it at the band's next concert. It became the most famous (as in, the only one you've ever heard of) of Bagley's compositions and one of the most recognizable American marches. John Phillip Sousa ranked it among the top four in that category, surrounding it, of course, with his own marches. Its trio is regularly played at colors ceremonies. It even pops up in the TubaChristmas version of Jingle Bells. He sold the rights to the arrangement for $25.
