Published by William Ortiz (A0.1009002). The text for “La Décima Musa†(2016) for Soprano, Mezzo and Piano, written by Amaya E. Ortiz, is inspired and influenced by the life and work of the Mexican poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Sor Juana Inés (1651-1695) was a controversial figure that defended women’s rights to education and was censured. Her defiance towards the Catholic Church at the time, led to all her books being confiscated. She has been since named “La Décima Musa†and has also been known as “El Phoenix de Méxicoâ€. The work is divided musically into ten sections of different character, each one preceded by a vocalized or brief instrumental interlude introducing each verse of the poem. The piece begins with a subtle, serene and contemplative vocalize in the tonality of F mayor and continues it’s musical discourse through modulations, rhythmic changes and imitative polyphony. The music reflects to a certain degree the neo baroque styling of the text, which in turn mirrors Sor Juana’s muse. The text transmits to me a phantasmagorical message that contains a great variety of metaphors and profound sentiment. I try to transform those words and thoughts into emotions and sensibilities through the miracle of what is music.

It is an exploration of dance. Beyond its rhythmic celebration, “Nueva York Tropical” also carries a message of social consciousness. It draws attention to the challenges faced by Latino communities, in the struggles of gentrification. The composition seeks to embody the resilience and spirit of these communities, when the musicians are called upon to chant “Shelter the community for free” repeatedly in protest mode. Through its infectious rhythms, bold atonal sections, and idyllic melodies, the piece becomes both a tribute and a call to action for social justice thru music. In “Nueva York Tropical”, the music doesn’t just invite you to sway, to dance – it also invites you to reflect, to think and to recognize the vibrant contributions that pop culture can instill in contemporary classical music.

William Ortiz #1089378. Published by William Ortiz (A0.1514884). “Sandungueo”, for Brass Quintet, uses Caribbean and Hip-Hop dance motives to create a lively and energetic dancescape. The opening fragmented “cencerro” and reggaeton rhythmic motive proclaimed is significant in that it introduces the works essence. “Sandungueo” is a style of dance and party music associated with reggaeton. This “cencerro” and “guaguanco” tumbao motives return throughout the piece in various guises and changes of tonality. The piece emulates a jazz ensemble where there are sections in which the instruments are called upon to solo against a rhythmic basso continuo or vamp. Latin and Hip-Hop rhythmic motives are prominent and integral to the work. This piece is a reworking of the second movement of my “Quinteto de Metales”.

The work also explores the possible combinations of the trio to form timbres, harmonies and rhythmic polyphonies, while also distinguishing the coloristic individuality of each instrument.

ElegÃa a los Inocentes CaÃdos, which translates to Elegy for the Fallen Innocent, is a work for Chorus and Orchestra in memorial of the massacre that took place on Palm Sunday, 1937 in Ponce, Puerto Rico.A peaceful civilian march turned into a police shooting in which 19 civilians and 2 policemen were killed, and more than 200 civilians were wounded. Most of the dead were reportedly shot in their backs. The march had been organized by the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party to commemorate the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico and to protest the U.S. government's imprisonment of the party's leader Pedro Albizu Campos.A free twelve-tone matrix is the musical language and style used that reflects the brutal violence of this historic occurrence. The biblical text, from Ecclesiastes, also conveys and addresses the helplessness, the anguish, the outrage, and the injustices that, unfortunately, still keep occurring during our times.

This process is a musical metaphor for the dichotomy of present-day urban life. The work is scored to reflect the sound world and the emotional distress of a marginated society.
