Once in Royal David’s City is a Christmas carol with words by Cecil Frances Alexander (nee Humphreys) and music by Henry John Gauntlett. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at the King's College Chapel Cambridge has begun its Christmas Eve service of this carol, since 1919, as the Processional hymn. According to tradition, the soloist of this carol is chosen on the day of the performance. It was the first recoding that the King's College Choir made for EMI in 1948. This listing is for bass-clef instruments and can be used as either a lead sheet or a solo part (with or without accompaniment – accompaniment not provided). It includes an optional, virtuosic variation of the melody, ideal for solo performances. This version is in F major (written pitch). This arrangement functions very well for both a moderately advanced solo horn in F and horn in F duet. The duet part is more intermediate, making it a great option for an intermediate level student, or a less experienced player. The music was composed by the German immigrant Fredrik Pacius, with words by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, and with this music it was performed for the first time on 13 May 1848. The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from Defence of Fort M'Henry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large American flag, the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the American victory. Jari Villanueva earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Music from Kent State University, Ohio. He retired from the US Air Force Band in Washington DC where he spent 23 years as a trumpeter, bugler and staff arranger. He started his publishing company JV MUSIC in 1995. A student of Bill Holcombe, he continues writing for different ensembles and his arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808682).     After You’ve Gone, composed in 1918 by Turner Layton (melody) and Henry Creamer (lyrics), was a hit from the beginning. Al Jolson introduced it to live audiences, Marion Harris’ record went to #1 in early 1919, and since then dozens of artists have recorded it . . . and many are still doing so. The words are rather sad-she’s leaving and he’s trying to get her to stay-but played up tempo, the melody is bouncy and fun. That sad-versus-happy dichotomy is incorporated in this arrangement. It begins with a bright, bouncy introduction and first-time-through of the chorus, then slows so the Horn in F can play a melancholic and somewhat schmaltzy rendition of the verse. The Tuba provides a transition back to the upbeat chorus, and we are again off to the races. Layton’s melody slips and slides from one instrument to the next (with the Tuba getting an entire iteration all to itself!), until the pace again slows for a 4-bar reminder of the sentimental verse, which then gives way to a rousing Dixieland-like closing.

She also used the same text in A Hymn for Aviators, a musical setting by English composer Henry Baker (1852). Hamilton wrote her prayer in 1915 during World War I with the transcript first appearing in the American Student Hymnal of 1928 set to Mozart’s Dona Nobis Pacem. Years later during World War II, the initial verse of the prayer was adapted for use in The Navy Hymn as a tribute to naval aviators. In 1853, still grieving for his three-year-old daughter's passing from brain ramollissement, the words of Scottish cleric Henry Lyte's hymn - Abide with me - came to English choirmaster William Monk's mind.  Although the hymn already had a tune, he was inspired by the thought of another and wrote the noble EVENTIDE within 10 minutes.  It was first published in 1861 in Hymns Ancient & Modern. It is performed at funerals, at Remembrance services, and even at sporting events (FA Cup).This setting is in the key of Eb Major, the same as the Hymnals, permitting it to be used as an accompaniment to singing and on its own.  The instrumental leads and harmonies differ for verses 1/3, 2/4 and verse 5.Instrumentation is for British Brass Band instruments of Cornet, Eb Tenor Horn, and Bb Euphonium (TC).  F Horn and Bass Clef Euphonium alternates are included.Duration ~ 4:40 10 pages.
