ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR JAZZ QUARTET This work is from series of 6 related pieces of new music that I have composed and arranged for a new Originals quartet that had its debut on Tuesday March 28 as the final concert of the 2023 season of the long running noontime spring jazz series at the Midwest Trust Center in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The music is written and arranged for a modern jazz quartet. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. However, I truly welcome other ensembles to perform and program these selections of music too.THIS MUSIC IS BASED UPON THE PHILOSOPHY OF ABUNDANCE (COVEY)Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production. They also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the successes of other people – even, and sometimes especially, members of their own family or close friends and associates. Conversely, Abundance Mentality flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making. Sones y Jarabes Mixes - Cuarteto para ClarinetesLa obra musical ceremonial “Sones y Jarabes Mixesâ€, compuesta por Rito Marcelino Rovirosa, es ampliamente reconocida como uno de los himnos representativos de la región Mixe. Además de ser una pieza musical, también es un baile que forma parte integral de la cultura Mixe del estado de Oaxaca, México. El mismo autor también compuso un himno especÃfico para la región titulado “Himno Mixeâ€. En la tradición y costumbres de esta región, se realizan ceremonias y ritos para agradecer o pedir a las potencias naturales como el rayo, el viento, el agua, el sol, la montaña, la madre tierra y al rey “Konk ëy†(rey bueno), quien representa el vÃnculo con lo sagrado. Estas ceremonias pueden tener como objetivo tener una buena cosecha, alejar un mal sobrenatural, mejorar las condiciones de vida, tener abundancia económica o un buen año. Durante estas ceremonias se ofrendan bebidas como tepache y mezcal, alimentos y música, incluyendo sones y jarabes para bailar.Rito Marcelino Rovirosa, es un ilustre compositor mexicano conocido como el “hijo de la sierra mixeâ€, nació en Asunción Cacalotepec, Mixe, Oaxaca el 07 de abril de 1908 y falleció en Santiago Zacatepec Mixe, Oaxaca el 05 de julio de 2000 a la edad de 92 años. Rovirosa dejó un legado de más de 200 obras que se extendieron más allá de su región y fueron interpretadas por las bandas filarmónicas de casi todos los estados de la República Mexicana. Entre sus creaciones se encuentran sones y jarabes mixes, himno mixe, los mixes, fandango mixe, raza mixe, rey condoy, lustre, fiesta animada, viuda alegre, alegrÃa de mi alma, nueva esperanza, mi paisano y pájaro montañero. Sin embargo, no todas sus obras fueron conocidas o grabadas; dejó muchas inéditas e incluso escribió varias piezas a petición de otros músicos quienes le solicitaron que las dejara sin tÃtulo ni autorÃa. Marcelino Rovirosa vivió como cualquier otro campesino; dedicaba su tiempo a cuidar sus cultivos de café, maÃz y frijol. Las noches eran sus momentos favoritos para escribir sus obras inspirándose en la naturaleza, el canto de los pájaros y las convivencias con sus paisanos. Nadie hubiera imaginado que un indÃgena mixe iba a trascender con su música más allá de la frontera mixe. En la década de los años cuarenta del siglo pasado fue humillado por el mandamás de su pueblo quien lo envió a la cárcel acusándolo falsamente. Fue llevado a pie amarrado de las manos y sujetado por una cuerda por los guardianes desde su natal Asunción Cacalotepec hasta la cabecera distrital de Santiago Zacatepec un pueblo que lo adoptarÃa más tarde, después de caminar más de 10 horas en plena serranÃa fue conducido directamente a la cárcel donde permaneció durante tres años. Mientras estaba en la cárcel su creciente fama como buen músico llegó a oÃdos de las autoridades del pueblo, del agente del ministerio público, del juez que llevaba su caso y también de don Luis RodrÃguez Jacob, lÃder de la comunidad y del distrito mixe. A pesar de estar privado de su libertad gozaba de algunos tratos preferenciales que los demás no tenÃan. Fue incluido en la banda de música que viajó a la ciudad de Oaxaca, junto con las autoridades municipales para participar en un evento oficial que resultó ser todo un éxito. Al término de la misión y de regreso a Zacatepec don Luis RodrÃguez encomendó a los maestros de música y al distinguido Marcelino Rovirosa que escribieran una melodÃa representativa de la región mixe. Rito regresó como era natural a la cárcel municipal y puso manos a la obra; le facilitaron papel pautado y pluma y en pocos dÃas la obra solicitada quedó lista y lo tituló “fandango mixe†nombre sugerido por don Luis RodrÃguez.

This arrangement passes the melody back and forth between the treble and bass clef, and it has come nice harmonic surprises at the end. It is great for concerts, and since this melody sometimes appears in church hymnals it is also great for a Mass/Service at your church. Your students will love performing this piece!

Aphelion is one of my few pieces that's meant to tell a story and it's not incredibly specific, but here is the story of Aphelion. However, the definition of aphelion first is incredibly important.aphelion (noun):the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun.And it's very important to know the definition of its absolute antonym: perihelion.perihelion (noun):the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun.These are terms used in astronomy to describe a celestial object's extreme distance from the sun. I'm using this to describe a relationship between two people. The type of relationship does not matter, it is simply just a relationship. However, you perceive it: platonic, romantic, etc.That is up to your interpretation.Aphelion follows the story of two people, with the start of the piece not actually being the aphelion, but however the perihelion, starting in D Major.It highlights their relationship as perfect, well-rounded, and flawless relationship. Some may call it a honeymoon era/phase or just the possible closest two people could be, i.e the perihelion.Then the two slowly drift away, with a shift to B Minor and D Minor. Issues, flaws, and problems that weren't there before begin to appear. These issues are quickly shoved under the rug, and the two pretend that they are nonexistent. The piece shifts back to D major incredibly quickly, however, there is a slight sense of uneasiness within the piece that I intended to create as it goes through this relationship that is clearly rocky, but it isn't being addressed because neither are choosing to communicate these issues.Then, the mysterious part hits very quickly, this is the aphelion. following a D Minor chord progression, then a shift into D minor itself. This part is where the relationship issues reach a boiling point, neither can stand the other and any attempt to resolve the issues is essentially useless. They stay in a toxic relationship. However, it's labeled as mysterious because the future is an absolute mystery to the two. They don't know what will happen. Then, one confronts the other, they choose to genuinely communicate.It's where the shift back to D Major occurs. They finally come to an understanding. At this point, they can choose to stay in the relationship, and work on the issues, or come to an understanding that it might not work from here, because a relationship takes two. There is a sense of peace, they are finally at peace with one another and their situation. Life can continue moving on, and the piece ends on an A Major chord. This is because A Major can be interpreted as one finally becoming content.That is the story that I intended to tell by writing Aphelion.

Legend has it that this old tune was discovered written on a scrap of paper found in a bottle which washed up on a beach in North Wales around 1900; its Welsh nickname Ton-y-Botel (Tune in a Bottle) comes from this story. The melody is also known as Ebenezer, named for Ebenezer Chapel where the actual composer attended services while writing this tune. Lyrics in sacred and secular contexts alike have been set to this famous melody. This dramatic piece begins with the arranger's original music rising in a theme accompanied by triplets, then moves into the powerful Welsh tune itself which in this creative arrangement is tossed from voice to voice, hand to hand. A strong sense of the love of Jesus rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me as well as a tender confidence in it underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love are the lingering emotions one feels as the same original music closes the piece with an impression of wonder. Some fingerings are included to facilitate reading but are merely suggestions. Pedaling has been written in, but again, is a suggestion. Because of its history, this music is adaptable to almost any circumstance, secular or sacred, where people gather for meaningful events: civic or military ceremonies, graduations, memorials, weddings, or church services of any denomination.

ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR JAZZ QUARTET This work is from series of 6 related pieces of new music that I have composed and arranged for a new Originals quartet that had its debut on Tuesday March 28 as the final concert of the 2023 season of the long running noontime spring jazz series at the Midwest Trust Center in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The music is written and arranged for a modern jazz quartet. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. However, I truly welcome other ensembles to perform and program these selections of music too.THIS MUSIC IS BASED UPON THE PHILOSOPHY OF ABUNDANCE (COVEY)Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production. They also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the successes of other people – even, and sometimes especially, members of their own family or close friends and associates. Conversely, Abundance Mentality flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision making.
