My original song, Poe's Christmas Eve Carousel Ride, is a microtonal melody for Celesta and/or Flute/Voice, based on Edgar Allan Poe's Evening Star.I imagined Edgar Allan Poe sitting on one of the carousel horses as it was going around and around. While this was happening, he was looking up at the night sky and thought about how much he liked the evening star better than the moon's light. (The celesta is known for its recognized sound in Tchaikovsky's, The Nutcracker Suite, The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.). I figured out how to put it in a quartal tone key in Finale, thanks to Google. I used quartal tones in the left hand, so it's a blend of a tonal melodic line in an atonal landscape. Edgar Allan Poe had a horrific life. His father abandoned his family when he was young. His mother died when he was a child. After he was adopted, although not legally, he had a falling out with his foster father, who alienated him and didn't let him know that his foster mother was dying. But, he did inform him after she died. Edgar married his cousin, Virginia Clem, who was 13 and he was 26. She died 11 years into their marriage due to tuberculosis. Thus, some writers say that all of his writings have a beautiful woman who died in his stories. He lost all of the women who loved him in his life. When you see his portrait, he has sad eyes, as someone who has suffered much. But, his writing has lived well beyond his lifetime of misery and heartache. My song symbolizes, not only Poe's poem, but his life, as very difficult, yet beautiful. With me poetry has not been a purpose, but a passion. Edgar Allan Poe. But while my etudes as a whole are loosely modeled after his, this piece, composed in 1992, is as stylistically remote from Chopin as he was from, say, Beethoven. My thirds etude is mellifluous., yearning, and deeply lyrical. It doesn't sound like an etude. It sounds like a distant song that just happens to be based on thirds and just happens to be quite difficult to play. Yes, virtuoso, no show-offy. Have fun.

There is a version for Soprano/tenor and Piano and one for guitar as well. Easy to perform and the text was inspired of the following narrative. I Slaughtered an Orange over the Sink... ...and it just sat there…It didn't say a word, not a sound of anguish, not even when my teeth started to tear apart it's flesh little by little... I knew it was a special orange but I couldn't fathom the magnitude of its character…Even when gentle I took it away from its friends there at the top of the kitchen counter, it looked at me almost with a sense of gratitude. Yes, gratitude.! As if it was saying: Thank you! Thank you for helping me to fulfill the purpose of my life…Since I was a little seed I knew I would serve a higher purpose. My sacrifice will help a human to become a healthier mother, doctor, composer, a better scientist. Yes, I think I felt it said…a better composer as well. ...and there I was, sinking my teeth deep inside its flesh and taking all of what it had to offer. It's life, it's substance, it's gratitude for serving a higher purpose. I slaughtered it over the sink, to avoid any evidence of what had happen there. The remaining outer sell, I placed it on the stove top and lighted up with fire, as my mother use to do, to release the heavenly smell and there it was. Evaporated everywhere! I inhale it, It became totally a part of me. Today, I slaughtered an orange over the sink and I didn’t say thank you! Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. The latter feature has also led Paraskevas to the creation of films, notably the acclaimed I Finally Did It (Gold award, California Film Awards 2010), dealing wittily with Death, a recurring extra-musical theme in his music. Tribute to the Trail of Tears is an original SATB choir song commemorating my Choctaw heritage. When I wrote this song, I wanted to look at the Trail of Tears from the Choctaws' eyes. I did this by emphasizing the contrast between their anger with the shouting taken from a Choctaw war chant and hope with a Choctaw Sun Prayer (the sun is an important figure of hope in Choctaw spirituality), their English traditions forced upon them and their true Choctaw nature, and the betrayal of a government that was supposed to protect them. This song is designed to be slow and relaxed (~70bpm for the first part and ~85bpm for the piu mosso), with the bends representing relaxed glissandos in the voice. The last three chords are meant to be sensitive and should be taken very slowly. Keep in mind that this piece should not only be meaningful but convey the emotions to spread the Native awareness that is so direly needed in America.

Unfortunately he did not, but in the process of my research I stumbled upon Cesare Pavese, 1908-1950. To know a bit more about this person, I contacted my Italian colleague, Giorgio Rimondi, who is a professor in Ferrara, Italy. Giorgio gave me a nice summary of Pavese's life and work. So I went on Amazon and bought a bilingual book of his poems: Disaffections. The poems that intrigued me the most were the ones he wrote for his paramour, the American model and actress, Constance Dowling. The last poem he wrote before he committed suicide at the age of 41 was dedicated to her: Death will come and will have your eyes. I chose that poem as the anchor of a set of eight poems for the song cycle. 1. Ancora tu sei l'amore 2. To C. from C.*** 3. In the morning you always come back 4. Verrà la morta e avrà i tuoi occhi 5. Passerò per Piazza di Spagna 6. The night you slept 7. I gatti lo sapranno 8. Last blues, to be read some day*** NB: Two of the poems with *** are originally in English. I thought an English setting within a song cycle that is Italian would be a bit jarring. So I asked my friend Giorgio if he could make me an Italian version of the poems. He instead informed me that Italo Calvino had already made a literal translation of those two English poems.
