Here, it has been arranged for double reed choir (2 oboes, English horn, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon). The arrangement contains minimal edits to the original score allowing for the performers to interpret the work as they choose.The opening solo is performed is the rich low register of the English horn followed by solo bassoon. Just as in the original work, the main theme is continuous, and the theme is passed around the ensemble to every part. The work concludes with a short and sweet duet between the contrabassoon and 1st oboe.This arrangement is an excellent way to close out a university double reed studio recital or Double Reed Day. Dett studied with notable teachers including composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an honorary Masters Degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1932.
